Revan's mask

During the initial stages of the Mandalorian Wars, a Mandalorian female possessed this particular mask. The mask was left on the Outer Rim planet of Cathar in 3973 BBY, resting on the shore after her death during the Mandalorians' attack on that world. Ten years later, the Jedi Knight known as Revan utilized the mask to uncover proof of the Cathar species' genocide; Revan then took the woman's mask for himself, promising to wear it until the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders were permanently defeated. One year after Revan and his faction of Jedi successfully defended the Galactic Republic and destroyed the Mandalorians, Revan proclaimed himself the new Dark Lord of the Sith, thereby initiating the Jedi Civil War. Darth Revan continued to wear the mask until he was captured by the Jedi Order.

Usage

Originally, this mask was a component of a Mandalorian female's armor, featuring a color scheme of red and gray. Following her death during the Mandalorians' genocide against the Cathar people on their homeworld in 3973 BBY, the mask was claimed ten years later by the Jedi Knight Revan and was immediately worn by the Jedi. Revan wore this mask as he led the Galactic Republic to victory over the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders. After becoming a Sith Lord under the tutelage of a Sith Emperor and eventually declaring himself the new Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Revan incorporated the mask into his personal armor, wearing it until his capture by the Jedi Order and Republic forces in 3957 BBY. Revan wore the mask again on Dromund Kaas during his confrontation with the Sith Emperor.

History

Revan discovering the mask on Cathar.

During the initial engagements of the Mandalorian Wars, a Mandalorian female wore this mask while present during the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders' devastation of the Outer Rim world of Cathar. After forcing the Cathar people into the sea, the woman attempted to dissuade Cassus Fett—the leader of the attack on the planet—from killing the Cathar, believing they were sufficiently defeated. However, Fett refused, ordering his Mandalorians to exterminate the Cathar; the woman died defending the Cathar during the slaughter, and her mask washed ashore.

Ten years later, the Jedi Knight Revan, along with his friend and fellow Jedi Knight Malak, and their faction of Jedi, were on Cathar seeking evidence of the Mandalorians' slaughter of the Cathar people. Vrook Lamar, a member of the Jedi High Council, and a team of Council loyalists arrived and confronted the Revanchists, ordering them to cease their efforts. During this confrontation, Revan noticed the mask that had belonged to the Mandalorian woman and picked it up. When light illuminated the mask, all present Jedi experienced a vision of the battle that had occurred a decade prior through the Force. Following the vision, Revan realized that the Mandalorian female had attempted to defend the Cathar and died as a result of the Mandalorians' desire to massacre defenseless civilians. In honor of her sacrifice, Revan donned her mask, vowing to wear it until he and his followers brought the Mandalorians to justice.

Revan wearing the mask 300 years later during the Cold War

Revan continued to wear the mask throughout the conflict, which concluded with the near extermination of the Mandalorians in the war's final battle at Malachor V in 3960 BBY. Subsequently, the two Jedi Knights fell to the dark side of the Force under the guidance of the Sith Emperor; Revan eventually declared himself Dark Lord of the Sith, with Malak becoming his Sith apprentice, thus establishing their own Sith Empire. Revan wore the mask during the Jedi Civil War until Malak betrayed and left his Master for dead in 3957 BBY. When Revan's comatose body was recovered by the Jedi strike team sent to capture him, the Jedi Council repaired the Sith Lord's damaged mind and saved his life, but also reprogrammed him with an artificial persona, one who was loyal to the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order.

Unbeknownst to even the Jedi Council, Bastila Shan, the leader of the Jedi strike team that captured Darth Revan, recovered the mask and hid it for many years. She feared that the mask would not only cause Revan to regain all of his lost memories, but would also restore his original persona, as well as the dark side within him. After Revan disappeared, the Jedi Exile Meetra Surik set out to find him. Before she left, Shan gave the mask to her with instructions to give it to Revan. Surik eventually found Revan on the Sith world Dromund Kaas. After the mask was given to Revan by Surik, all of his memories came back to him.

Revan's mask, scarred from the battle on the Foundry, left behind on Yavin 4 after his permanent physical death

Following Revan's defeat by the Sith Emperor, the mask remained under Sith control for many centuries. During the Cold War period, it was in the possession of the rogue Sith Lord Grathan until the Revanites, a Sith cult devoted to emulating Darth Revan's life and teachings, stole it. After Revan was freed from his prison he reacquired the mask and wore it once more, until he was confronted by a Sith strike team at The Foundry. The mask suffered damage during his defeat, with a prominent vertical scratch marking the left side and crossing the eye slit. With his body controlled by the dark half of his spirit, Revan wore the mask with his tattered robes until Republic and Imperial champions confronted him on Yavin 4. After his defeat and the reunification of the two halves of his spirit, Revan's physical body vanished, leaving behind his mask, lightsaber, and tattered robes.

Behind the scenes

Revan's mask made its debut in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed by BioWare. The backstory of how Revan obtained the mask was detailed in the standalone comic Masks, the forty-second issue of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comic series, written by John Jackson Miller. A preview for BioWare's upcoming PC game Star Wars: The Old Republic, released on the game's official website, featured the mask. The video depicted a player-controlled character fighting to disable an ancient complex built by Darth Revan during his time as a Sith Lord. Near the video's conclusion, the scene shifted to what appeared to be a tomb, with Revan's mask lying in front of it. While both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Masks depict the helmet as red and gray, several artworks portray the mask as solely red.

Hasbro's action figure of Darth Revan, released in the third quarter of 2007, featured Revan's mask. The mask was also present on Revan's miniature figure in The Force Unleashed set of Star Wars Miniatures, released on November 16, 2007. In 2009, the Mighty Muggs' figure of Darth Revan included the mask. A miniature bust of Darth Revan, featuring the mask, was released in January 2011 by Gentle Giant Studios.
