Scatter protocol

Scatter protocol represented a flight maneuver utilized by Alliance to Restore the Republic pilots. This procedure mandated that each starfighter pilot initiate their departure independently, charting a course through hyperspace along a randomly generated series of zigzags. The purpose of this tactic was to avoid being tracked by the Galactic Empire, thereby reducing potential casualties. Following a mission on the planet Giju in 0 ABY, Red Squadron pilots Arhul Narra, Wedge Antilles, and Luke Skywalker employed this protocol upon their departure from the planet's orbit.

Description

The Alliance to Restore the Republic's Starfighter Corps utilized scatter protocol as a flight tactic. This protocol stipulated that each pilot had to navigate through hyperspace individually, following a randomized and erratic zigzag path that incorporated multiple jumps when leaving a mission. The intention behind this strategy was to thwart potential tracking efforts by Imperial forces. Moreover, it was intended to limit losses to a single starfighter in the event that the Empire successfully tracked a pilot, as opposed to losing an entire squadron or fleet. This procedure was adopted as a response to the Empire's common practice of deploying numerous warships to saturate sectors in reaction to perceived threats.

History

Red Squadron pilots Arhul Narra, Wedge Antilles, and Luke Skywalker utilized scatter protocol when they departed Giju in 0 ABY.

In 0 ABY, Red Leader Arhul Narra instructed Red Squadron pilots Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles to initiate scatter protocol. This order was given after the trio successfully evacuated a group of rebel leaders hiding underground, transporting them away from the planet Giju. The pilots also overcame Imperial TIE fighters in the skies above the planet. Narra departed first, followed by Antilles, and lastly Skywalker. Before jumping to hyperspace, Skywalker had his astromech droid R2-D2 program his navigation computer with the jump coordinates for the planet Devaron.

Behind the scenes

The scatter protocol was initially introduced in The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, a 2015 novel penned by Jason Fry. The protocol's first visual depiction occurred in first part of the comic book adaptation of the aforementioned novel. Alec Worley wrote the adaptation, Ruairí Coleman provided the illustrations, and it was published in Star Wars - Magazin 19 on March 29, 2017. The comic adaptation presents a modified version of Arhul Narra's dialogue concerning the scatter protocol.
