Giju was a planet situated within the Colonies region of space. Its location along both the Rimma Trade Route and the Herglic Alley hyperspace routes resulted in a high volume of interstellar traffic, leading to the establishment of numerous tapcafes and cantinas to cater to the needs of travelers. During the year 0 ABY, a clandestine group of leaders from the Alliance to Restore the Republic were successfully evacuated from Giju by a trio of pilots belonging to the Alliance's Red Squadron, who engaged in combat with forces of the Galactic Empire in the skies above the planet. Moreover, the Artiodac chef named Strono Tuggs also made a visit to Giju, where he sampled various iterations of the local Giju Glug beverage while undertaking a culinary exploration of the galaxy sometime between 34 ABY and 35 ABY.

From orbit, the planet Giju appeared to be blue in color. Its location was within the [Colonies](/article/colonies] region, specifically in grid square L-13 of the Interior on the Standard Galactic Grid. One terminus of the Giju Run hyperspace route was located at Giju, providing a connection to the world of Bardotta in the Bardotta system of the Shasos sector. Furthermore, the Herglic Alley route extended from Giju to the planet Byblos, which was also situated along the Corellian Run. Giju was also positioned on the Rimma Trade Route, a significant super-hyperroute linking it to the astronomical object Dentaal and the planet Ghorman.

By the year 10 BBY, [Maz Kanata](/article/maz_kanata], known as the pirate queen, had identified Giju as a point of interest on a map contained within the book titled Smuggler's Guide. During 0 ABY, a clandestine group of leaders from the Alliance to Restore the Republic were evacuated from Giju aboard a transport, in advance of the arrival of agents serving the Galactic Empire. This transport was protected by three X-wing starfighters of the rebel Red Squadron, but they encountered an Imperial patrol of TIE fighters in the space surrounding the world, which led to a firefight between the opposing starfighters. Many other starships in the vicinity, including a pair of freight tenders and a string of bulk freighters, rapidly moved away from the conflict as additional Imperial forces arrived.
Despite the dense traffic around Giju providing ample concealment opportunities for enemy vessels, the rebels managed to destroy a number of TIEs before the transport successfully initiated a jump to hyperspace. Subsequently, the three X-wings executed scatter protocol, each independently jumping to hyperspace. Luke Skywalker, a rebel pilot, employed a randomly generated zigzag pattern of hyperspace jumps to reach the planet Devaron, which was located relatively close to Giju.

Not long before the Alliance established Echo Base on the planet Hoth, that world was absent from a star chart known as Giju plot 773/B. Sometime between the years 33 ABY and 34 ABY, the protocol droid C-3PO recounted the story of Red Squadron's mission to Giju to Jessika Pava, a Resistance pilot.
During a culinary journey across the galaxy taken between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs made a stop at Giju, visiting various tapcafes and cantinas and discovering several variations of a popular drink known locally as Giju Glug. He later mentioned Giju when including a recipe for his preferred version, featuring Blutopia pearls, in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which saw publication in 35 ABY.
The connection provided by Herglic Alley between the Rimma Trade Route and the Corellian Run meant that many travelers found themselves on Giju during their journeys across the galaxy. To accommodate these visitors, the planet boasted a diverse selection of cantinas and tapcafes, each offering a unique array of refreshments.
Within current Star Wars canon, Giju made its first appearance in the 2015 novel The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, authored by Jason Fry. It was then depicted visually for the first time in Star Wars - Magazin 19 on March 29, 2017 via the first part of the comic adaptation of the novel, which was penned by Alec Worley and illustrated by Ruairí Coleman.

Giju originated within the Star Wars Legends continuity, initially mentioned in the Dark Force Rising Sourcebook, a 1993 supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game authored by Bill Slavicsek and published by West End Games. The planet was then visually represented for the first time in the 2005 reference book The New Essential Chronology, written by Daniel Wallace. Giju's first complete Legends appearance then took place during a flashback sequence in Purge – Seconds to Die, a comic book written by John Ostrander, illustrated by Jim Hall, and published by Dark Horse Comics on November 11, 2009.
