The endeavor initiated by the Alliance to Restore the Republic sought to extract clandestine rebel commanders from the world of Giju before their capture by Galactic Empire operatives. Red Squadron provided an escort for a departing transport, engaging with multiple TIE/ln space superiority starfighters, and eliminating a number of them prior to initiating a transition to faster-than-light travel.
Several months following the Battle that occurred at Yavin, the Rebel forces dispatched a trio of T-65B X-wing fighters from Red Squadron, under the command of officer Arhul Narra. Their assignment was to safeguard a vessel transporting covert rebel leaders being evacuated from the planetary body of Giju before the arrival of Imperial agents. Narra (Red Leader) steered the transport away from the planet's surface, while officer Wedge Antilles (Red Three) and officer Luke Skywalker (Red Five) covered the rear, engaging the TIEs. They initially confronted a TIE fighter patrol, which they successfully neutralized. However, it appeared as though the Empire deployed every available fighter in the system to confront the rebel attackers.
Navigating through the stream of other large cargo ships departing the planet, the two X-wing fighters employed a "scoot and shoot" tactic, with Skywalker taking the lead and Antilles closely following. Approaching enemies could only target Skywalker, while Antilles moved in and out of cover, firing at the attackers. This allowed them to destroy three TIE fighters; however, an additional four TIE fighters were concealed within the cargo ship formation, lying in wait. Skywalker experienced a momentary distraction, sensing something within his mind, but Antilles quickly brought him back to focus, and the TIEs were ultimately destroyed. Once the transport was safely away, Narra instructed his pilots to initiate scatter protocols. Each pilot then followed a randomly generated zigzag trajectory through hyperspace, executing multiple jumps to prevent any potential tracking back to the Rebel Navy positioned above Devaron.
This operation is depicted in the 2015 official young adult novel The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, penned by Jason Fry and launched on Force Friday.
