Attacks on Platform NL-1
title: Battle of Platform NL-1
The Alliance to Restore the Republic initiated a string of offensives against Galactic Empire forces during the year 3 ABY, aiming to disrupt the construction of the space station known as Platform NL-1 within the Pakuuni system.
Prelude
Grand Admiral Thrawn's fleet had successfully eradicated the Pakuuni Pirates' base, thereby securing a strategic position in the Pakuuni system. Following the initial strike, the Frigate Ludwick maintained patrols within the system, awaiting the arrival of Imperial convoys carrying essential components and construction personnel for the establishment of a new space installation. Imperial Intelligence indicated a high likelihood of a retaliatory strike by enemy forces.
The battle
To secure the area until the arrival of the convoys, the Ludwick dispatched two wings of TIE fighters alongside a squadron of TIE interceptors for patrol duties. Shortly before the convoy's scheduled arrival, the Alliance EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate Huntress materialized from hyperspace. It immediately launched B-wings and Z-95 Headhunters, swiftly reinforced by Y-wings from Red Squadron to conduct bombing runs on the Frigate Ludwick. Although Imperial fighters initially gained the upper hand against the Rebel Alliance's vanguard, they were soon challenged by the arrival of fresh X-wings.
Imperial pilots, including Maarek Stele, fought valiantly against the Rebel assault. However, the persistent Rebel rocket and torpedo attacks inflicted severe damage to the Ludwick's hull. The Huntress also sustained significant damage, resulting in shield failure. Consequently, two Lambda-class T-4a shuttles named Escape carrying Imperial Officers attempted to evacuate the frigate. However, Maarek destroyed both shuttles as the Frigate prepared to retreat. Just as the Ludwick's situation worsened, the Assassin-class corvette group Horvus arrived, along with the Victory I-class Star Destroyer Stalwart and the rest of the convoy, consisting of Cargo ferry group Bakkun, freighter group Ravn and Modular conveyor group Gorfan. Overwhelmed by the combined might of the Stalwart and its accompanying forces, the Frigate Huntress retreated into hyperspace.

Although Imperial fighters initially gained the upper hand against the Rebel Alliance's vanguard, they were soon challenged by the arrival of fresh X-wings. Undeterred by the Imperial presence, Rebel forces launched their initial assault on the platform itself, utilizing A-wings, Y-wings, and two Assassin-class corvettes from group Moori. With its shields operating at only fifty percent capacity, Platform NL-1 was highly vulnerable to the impending Rebel attack. Imperial gunboats, TIE/sa bombers, and TIE/IN interceptors from the Frigate Ludwick were quickly engaged in combat with Y-wings, A-wings, and the newly arrived X-wing starfighters. A contingent of assault gunboat group Tau destroyed Corvette Moori, prompting the arrival of Shuttle Shakker. Prior to the attack, agents of the Prophets of the Dark Side had tasked their trusted pilot, Maarek Stele, with capturing such escape craft in order to gather crucial intelligence regarding Rebel plans in the system. Stele personally identified and disabled the Shakker as it fled from Moori. Transport Soryi was dispatched from NL-1 to apprehend the officers on board. As Imperial fighters gradually eliminated the remaining Rebel forces, transports from group Del arrived to attempt another futile torpedo run on the platform, only to be destroyed. With the capture of Shuttle Shakker and the arrival of the Victory I-class Star Destroyer Stalwart from hyperspace, the remaining Rebel forces were quickly routed.
Grand Admiral Thrawn was eager to inspect the progress of his subordinates on Space station NL-1. Due to repair and maintenance requirements, a significant portion of the Frigate Ludwick's TIE fighter and Interceptor squadrons were unavailable to provide a fighter screen during Thrawn's inspection. Therefore, the Ludwick augmented its defenses with heavily armed TIE Bombers to oversee the Grand Admiral's visit. Imperial Intelligence anticipated potential threats but lacked specific intelligence.
Thrawn and his staff traveled from his command ship, the Victory-class Star Destroyer Stalwart, to NL-1 aboard Transports Sigma. Shortly after Thrawn began his journey to NL-1, an attack force consisting of Rebel A-wings, X-wings, and Y-wings arrived. Imperial fighters moved to intercept as Thrawn's inspection team boarded the platform. Imperial pilots, including Maarek Stele, successfully repelled this low-level hit-and-run attack just as Grand Admiral Thrawn completed his inspection and returned to the Stalwart aboard Transport Omega. Moments after Imperial TIE Bombers moved to escort Thrawn back to the Stalwart, several groups of Pakuuni pirate shuttles arrived to further disrupt the situation. Thrawn safely boarded his vessel as Imperial fighters suppressed the remaining Rebel and pirate forces.
The skirmish was considered a close call for Thrawn's safety. He was impressed by Stele's performance in a TIE Bomber in a role it was not designed to do. With the inspection complete Thrawn decided to make preparations to finalise the station and bring the Pakuuni sector under Imperial control.
With the space station NL-1's construction completed and inspected by then Grand Admiral Thrawn, only the final touches remained to make the station fully operational. His Victory-class Star Destroyer Stalwart remained on station to oversee the last critical steps of the station's construction. Two System patrol craft designated Ranger arrived shortly after the previous enemy engagement. The Stalwart was preparing to depart the system to bring reinforcements and relief to the battle-weary pilots of the frigate Ludwick. Anticipating a final attempt by the Rebel Alliance to disrupt Imperial control of the Pakuuni sector, members of the Prophets of the Dark Side tasked their pilot, Maarek Stele, to be vigilant for any craft carrying high-priority targets in order to gather further intelligence on Rebel activity.
In the absence of a Star Destroyer, patrol frequency increased, and pilots aboard the Ludwick braced for further enemy activity. As expected, the Rebels launched an attack, beginning with the arrival of the assault transport Thunder, accompanied by B-wings, the rebels' more advanced assault craft. Escorting assault gunboats, TIE bombers, and interceptors moved to intercept, followed by the launch of a suspicious shuttle from the Rebel assault transport. Maarek Stele, piloting an assault gunboat, inspected and disabled the shuttle Electra, which was found to be carrying Rebel advisors. During the battle, more Rebel forces arrived aboard the Rover group, along with A-wings and X-wing fighters. Transport Shark was dispatched to capture Shuttle Electra and succeeded in its mission despite the intense fighting. The Rebel onslaught heavily taxed Imperial pilot abilities and inflicted significant damage to station NL-1 and patrol craft Ranger. Despite this, Imperial starfighters gained the upper hand against the imposing rebels, just as the Stalwart arrived with the frigate Gaarni, CR90 corvette Stallion and supplies aboard bulk freighters Sivaa to relieve the Ludwick.
Aftermath
Thrawn oversaw the repairs of NL-1, anxiously wanting the station fully operational and prepared for any further Rebel attack, keeping everyone involved on a hasty schedule. With the Station fully installed, operational and reinforced, the Rebels and the Pakuuni pirates had been completely driven off and the Imperial control over the sector, allowing intergalactic trade to flourish and benefit the Empire. For his efforts, Stele was awarded the Medal of Progress.
Stele was also given the next rank in the Secret Order of the Empire for capturing the Rebel officers, allowing more information about Rebel activity in the sector. However, he would not follow through with what they would find. Instead, he was transferred to Admiral Zaarin's frigate Shamus to help him acquire new Hyperdrive technology.
Behind the scenes
The battle appears in the PC Game Star Wars: TIE Fighter, as the majority of the third Battle mission. This article assumes "Medium" difficulty. In "Hard" difficulty not only are there are more fighters to contend with, the player has to destroy another Assassin-class corvette group Runeer.
