A starship, originating from "Lesser Space" – a region of the galaxy situated beyond the Unknown Regions – bore technology from the Galactic Republic and sheltered human survivors circa 19 BBY. A task force belonging to the Chiss Ascendancy's Chaf family then took control of this vessel.
Mitth'ras'safis, a Chiss Syndic, and a human female pilot managed to steal the starship away from the task force. However, they were unable to deliver it to a refuge world from which they intended to provide the Ascendancy's Defense Hierarchy Council with the Republic technology, due to the ship sustaining too much damage to reach their goal. Subsequently, the syndic and the human crashed the vessel in a valley, resulting in their own death but saving the humans aboard.
This enormous starship, hailing from "Lesser Space" – that area of the galaxy beyond the Unknown Regions – transported Galactic Republic technology. It included engines, a small vessel, a pylon, and enough food and supplies to sustain people for generations.

The starship, carrying human survivors, became involved in the Vagaari pirate operations by 19 BBY. This conflict involved the forces of the Chiss Ascendancy and the Vagaari pirates. A task force from the Ascendancy's Chaf family then acquired the vessel. Following this, Mitth'ras'safis (a Chiss syndic with the core name "Thrass") and a human female pilot stole the starship. Thrass and the woman absconded with the ship with the hope of bringing it to a refuge world where they could offer the Republic technology to the Ascendancy's Defense Hierarchy Council; however, their plan did not succeed. The ship was too damaged to reach the world, and they discovered the human survivors on board.
Consequently, they were compelled to crash the ship, killing themselves. The crash site, a stone-filled valley, meant that if Thrass and the human pilot survived, the other survivors would die. While the pilot offered to help the syndic escape, they both realized the Lesser Space ship's systems would self-destruct after she helped him get to the small starship aboard.
Unable to bring glory to his family, the Mitth family, or the Ascendancy, Thrass chose to prevent destruction. Believing that the balance of power among the Chiss families would be significantly disrupted if one family obtained the Republic technology, he crashed the ship to prevent that, resulting in his and the human pilot's death. Around 19 BBY, the Hierarchy Council and the Chiss Aristocra assembly were displeased with Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, Thrass's brother, for losing both the technology and his brother.

Within the current Star Wars canon, the starship was initially referenced in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first book in the Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It later appeared in flashback sequences in Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, the trilogy's third book, which was released in 2021.
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the ship, named Outbound Flight, was first mentioned in Zahn's 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, the first book of his Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy. Its wreckage first appeared in Zahn's 2004 novel Survivor's Quest, and the author's 2006 eponymous novel focused on the ship's original story. Elements of the ship's history in canon, including parts of dialogue of Syndic Mitth'ras'safis and Human Jedi Knight Lorana Jinzler, bear a strong resemblance to those presented in Outbound Flight.
