Vader Immortal – Episode I constitutes the initial installment of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, a virtual reality video game considered canon. ILMxLAB is responsible for its creation, while David S. Goyer, previously the writer of the virtual reality experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, served as both writer and executive producer. The game debuted on May 21, 2019, for the Oculus Quest, with Episode II following on September 25, 2019. A comprehensive release of all three episodes for PlayStation VR occurred on August 25, 2020. The narrative unfolds in 1 BBY, subsequent to the events of Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, centering on Darth Vader on Mustafar.
Following their escape from the Hutts while transporting a spice shipment, the Windfall finds itself forcibly removed from hyperspace due to an Interdictor vessel's intervention. Consequently, the Windfall's captain, an unnamed smuggler, along with their droid, ZO-E3, are apprehended.
Darth Vader pays a visit to the smuggler in their prison cell, issuing an order to open a specific box. The smuggler succeeds in this task, attributed to their lineage as a descendant of the ancient Force-sensitive figure, Lady Corvax. Subsequently, Vader departs, and a Mustafarian informs the smuggler about the imperative to escape, cautioning that Vader intends to exploit them in the pursuit of a crystal known as the Bright Star. After providing the smuggler with a hydrospanner, the escape is successfully executed.
Upon reaching the hangar, the Smuggler is detected, prompting the Mustafarian to advise that the sole means of egress involves descending into the caves situated below. The Smuggler and ZO-E3 effect their escape by navigating through the emergency hatch. Progressing through the ductwork of Vader's castle leads them to a maintenance zone, strategically positioned near Vader's private chambers. Here, they eavesdrop on a conversation where Vader is briefed about a device referred to as the Aeon Engine by a shadowy figure. They are informed that this engine holds the potential to grant Vader immense power, possibly even the ability to resurrect the dead. Subsequently, they witness Vader in possession of an echo of Padmé Amidala's soul, preserved within a crystal structure, although he is unable to establish communication with her.
The Smuggler and ZO-E3 manage to escape to another room, where the smuggler discovers a lightsaber. Following a concise training session facilitated by a training droid, they proceed stealthily into additional maintenance ducts. Their journey culminates at a loading platform, where they commandeer a skiff after engaging in a brief skirmish with stormtroopers, ultimately gaining access to a temple unearthed by the Empire during their excavation efforts.
A Mustafarian Priestess elucidates to the Smuggler and ZO-E3 the history of Mustafar, recounting its former state as a verdant green world where the Mustafarians coexisted harmoniously with Lady Corvax and her spouse, Dorwin Corvax. During an attack by an unidentified adversary, Dorwin sustained mortal injuries. In response, Lady Corvax absconded with the Bright Star, a potent artifact, and employed it to power the Aeon Engine. This action resulted in Dorwin being trapped between dimensions and the depletion of Mustafar's life energy, ultimately transforming it into the lava planet it is today.
The priestess and a guard depart, after instructing the Smuggler to retrieve the Bright Star, emphasizing that Vader must be prevented from acquiring it. However, shortly thereafter, a squad of stormtroopers enters and Vader swiftly disposes of the rambling ZO-E3. Vader then provides the smuggler with a device, which the Smuggler uses to activate a lift. Shortly after lowering the lift, however, a number of ancient droids activate and begin to attack. Vader orders his men to protect the prisoner, but they are quickly defeated. Once the Smuggler has destroyed the ancient droids, Vader confiscates the smuggler's lightsaber and says the two of them must continue on, and that Vader won't be denied.
