Vergesso, a celestial body classified as an asteroid, resided within the expanse of the Outer Rim Territories. This asteroid functioned as a shadowport, featuring an outfitter establishment. The smuggler known as Tryphon Leo paid a visit to this location, acting on a recommendation from Maz Kanata, the former pirate queen. Around the time of 2 BBY, the Mining Guild and Senator Mon Mothma's organized rebellion both showed activity on this asteroid.
This asteroid called Vergesso was positioned at an intersection of the Outer Rim Territories and the Trailing Sectors. Its location was designated as P-17 on the Standard Galactic Grid. A hyperspace route connected the asteroid to the planets Pastoria and Yar Togna. Vergesso was situated in proximity to Mumble's Turnaround, a hyperspace route frequently used by smugglers. The asteroid field known as the Vergesso Asteroids shared its name.

By 10 BBY, Vergesso served as the location of a shadowport, complete with a supplier of equipment. Maz Kanata, previously a pirate queen, identified the asteroid's location on a map featuring various points of interest, including treasure caches, shadowports, and outlaw garages. This map was included in a book known as the Smuggler's Guide. Furthermore, she suggested that the smuggler Tryphon Leo visit Vergesso's outfitter. Leo later stole the aforementioned book. After examining the map, the smuggler formulated a strategy to acquire wealth from some of the treasure caches, intending to utilize it to control the Spice Triangle trade network. They proceeded to visit the outfitter on Vergesso, spending the majority of their funds on equipment. They then wrote in an entry to the Smuggler's Guide that they anticipated being able to purchase the entire asteroid within a week's time.
Around 2 BBY, Vergesso functioned as an operational headquarters for an organized rebellion, secretly led by Senator Mon Mothma. The Mining Guild was also active on the asteroid. Following the rebels' unsuccessful attempts to gain support from the Bounty Hunters' Guild and the council of the Hutt Cartel during that year, General Davits Draven of the rebel forces considered the possibility of forming an alliance with the Mining Guild. He conducted an investigation into the guild's operations on Vergesso and other locations throughout the galaxy. Draven documented his proposal in an official report addressed to Mothma, which incorporated a map of Vergesso alongside the other locations under evaluation.

Another map was created for Mothma, displaying rebel safe worlds, starfighter hubs of level five or higher, operations headquarters, shadow planets, and deep space caches, with Vergesso being included. These rebel reports concerning Vergesso were eventually gathered by archivist Hendri Underholt, who incorporated them into a collection of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files. In 34 ABY, the location of Vergesso was displayed on multiple screens aboard the Halcyon, a Star Cruiser belonging to Chandrila Star Line, showcasing a partial map of the galaxy.
Vergesso was initially introduced into the current Star Wars canon through a map featured in "Where in the Galaxy Are the Worlds of Star Wars: The Force Awakens?," an article authored by Mark Newbold and published on StarWars.com on January 29, 2016. The location was first visualized on a map within Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an interactive role-playing experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, which opened to the public on March 1, 2022.
The concept of Vergesso originated in the Star Wars Legends novel Shadows of the Empire, penned by Steve Perry and published in April 1996. Chris Trevas first illustrated it in the Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook, authored by Peter M. Schweighofer and released by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game in June of that same year. It was then identified as Vergesso Prime in the Shadows of the Empire Planets Guide, also by West End Games, in January 1997.
