Wells

Wells was a captain in the Imperial Navy, serving the Galactic Empire. As a human Imperial officer, they commanded the cargo ship known as Freighter 2716 in 1 BBY. Their demise occurred when Saw Gerrera's act of sabotage caused the massive kyber crystal they were transporting to the Tonnis sector to detonate. This explosion resulted in the destruction of their freighter, as well as the Star Destroyer it was scheduled to meet, claiming their life in the process.

Biography

Captain Wells held command of Freighter 2716 during 1 BBY. Their mission involved the transportation of a substantial kyber crystal, along with several indentured civilian technicians, to a designated rendezvous point within the Tonnis sector. These resources, including the technicians, were intended for the construction of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's top-secret superweapon designed to dominate the galaxy. Aboard Well's vessel were also several stormtroopers and a squad of elite death troopers under the command of DT-F16. While en route to the Tonnis sector, Freighter 2716 made a stop at Faos Station.

Unbeknownst to Wells and their crew, Saw Gerrera, the leader of the Partisans, discovered the freighter's connection to the Death Star project. Consequently, he infiltrated the ship accompanied by members of the Spectres rebel cell, namely Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Chopper. The rebels quickly learned about the indentured civilian technicians being transported on Freighter 2716. They accidentally discovered the kyber crystal and eliminated the majority of DT-F16's squad. DT-F16, however, managed to escape and inform Captain Wells that Saw's rebels had taken control of the crystal.

Wells subsequently contacted Director Krennic and followed DT-F16's instructions to eliminate the escape pods and dispatch all security personnel to her location. Wells successfully ejected the escape pods into hyperspace, preventing the civilians from escaping. Despite deploying stormtroopers, they were unable to suppress the rebels and regain control of the crystal. DT-F16 cautioned Wells that they would both face severe consequences if they failed. Eventually, Freighter 2716 arrived in the Tonnis sector and met with Captain Slavin's Star Destroyer in deep space. Wells informed Slavin about the rebel presence, prompting Slavin to order his crew to secure the freighter.

However, Saw had destabilized the kyber crystal with the intention of denying it to the Empire and destroying the Imperial vessels. Saw, along with the rebels and civilians, escaped aboard a U-wing and a captured Imperial shuttle. The explosion of the kyber crystal resulted in the deaths of Wells, DT-F16, and Slavin, as it consumed both the freighter and the Star Destroyer.

Personality and traits

As a human officer in the Imperial Navy, Captain Wells possessed fair skin, blue eyes, and brown hair. They primarily remained on the bridge of Freighter 2716, delegating combat duties to DT-F16 and the stormtroopers stationed on the ship.

Behind the scenes

Wells made their initial appearance in "In the Name of the Rebellion," a two-part episode that constituted the third and fourth episodes of Star Wars Rebels' fourth season. David Shaughnessy provided their voice, also voicing Mich Matt and another Imperial officer who was not identified. While their name was not mentioned in the episode itself, earlier versions of the script did include their identity.

Wells shares the same character design as Commander Woldar, an officer who served under Thrawn.
