The Scipio conflict, alternatively referred to as the Battle for Scipio or the Banking Clan crisis, was a military engagement that occurred on the planet of Scipio between the forces of the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the period known as the Clone Wars. After aiding in the exposure of corruption within the InterGalactic Banking Clan, Rush Clovis assumed the leadership of the bank; however, he was subsequently manipulated by Count Dooku into increasing interest rates for the Republic. Consequently, Separatist forces occupied Scipio to solidify their control. The Republic countered with its own invasion, which enabled Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine to bolster the Republic's economic standing.
After the appointment of Senator Rush Clovis to the head of the Banking Clan, representatives from the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic convened on Scipio to oversee Clovis's formal installation as the new leader. Representing the Republic, Padmé Amidala, Senator of Naboo, was accompanied by Clone Commander Thorn and a garrison from the Coruscant Guard's diplomatic service. Conversely, the Confederate representative, Separatist Congress Leader Bec Lawise, was escorted by a contingent of commando droids.
Subsequently, Count Dooku subjected Clovis to blackmail, compelling him to escalate interest rates for the Republic while maintaining lower rates for the Separatists. This maneuver facilitated the Confederacy's complete dominance over the Banks. Commander Thorn and his garrison then found themselves under assault by Confederate forces. Thorn communicated this development to Amidala as Hyena-class Droid Fighter/Bombers obliterated his vessels, including a dozen Republic gunships and a Consular-class Armed Cruiser. As Separatist forces stormed Scipio, HMP droid gunships were deployed, unleashing B2-series super battle droids along with additional commando droids, who encircled and killed Thorn and his soldiers. Amidala promptly notified Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine and the Jedi. Shortly thereafter, Dooku arrived and took Amidala as a hostage.
Amidala was brought before Dooku, and upon her refusal to align with him, Dooku issued an order for her arrest. In response, Amidala seized a blaster, and Lawise declined to carry out the arrest, recognizing that the Separatist Senate would not sanction such an action. Dooku then coerced Amidala into shooting Lawise.
Subsequently, the Galactic Senate convened and voted in favor of launching a counter-invasion. Dooku then departed from the planet and returned to the blockade just as the Republic fleet under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker arrived. At that point, the Confederate forces in space abandoned their ground units on the planet and initiated a jump to hyperspace. The 501st Legion then descended planet-side to engage the Confederate ground forces. After eliminating the remaining Confederate forces, Scipio was secured. General Skywalker then forcefully entered Clovis' office with the intention of rescuing Amidala. An explosion subsequently struck the office, causing Clovis and Amidala to be thrown from the ledge. Skywalker managed to grasp both Amidala and Clovis. However, Skywalker found himself unable to maintain his hold on both individuals, leading Clovis to release his grip and fall to his death. Skywalker successfully pulled Amidala to safety.
In the wake of the battle, Senator Nix Card informed the Galactic Senate that the Muuns had opted to relinquish control of the banks to the Office of the Chancellor. Consequently, Palpatine acquired the financial resources necessary to establish his envisioned Galactic Empire.
