Detailed Plot

The Abuse

Years prior, a young Armitage Hux spills a tray of glasses while serving Commandant [Brendol Hux](/article/brendol_hux], his father, and Admiral Brooks. His father, the older Hux, insults his son, calling him pathetic and useless, while Brooks makes fun of the younger Hux for being the illegitimate child of a kitchen servant. Brooks suggests Armitage should lick up the spilled drink instead of wasting it. Armitage complies, but this enrages Brendol, who scolds him for being weak and forces him to stand.

Survivors of a Crash

Sometime later, General Armitage Hux, injured and bleeding, is awakened by Kylo Ren after their Xi-class light shuttle crashes on an unfamiliar planet. The pilot informs them that both their hyperdrive and engine are non-functional. Hux proposes contacting the First Order High Command, but the pilot reveals that their communication systems are also disabled. The shuttle subsequently crashes and explodes.

Kylo Ren utilizes his Force abilities to protect himself and General Hux; however, the pilot dies in the explosion. With communication lines down, Kylo Ren and General Hux are left with no alternative but to converse. Based on the circumstances of the crash, Ren and Hux conclude that their shuttle was deliberately sabotaged. Ren accuses Hux of failing to cultivate loyalty within the First Order Army, while Hux retorts that Ren should have detected the treason with his Force powers.

Hux taunts Ren, suggesting that he wears his helmet for "dress-up" and to conceal the faces of his "rebel scum" parents. Kylo Ren ignites his lightsaber, warning Hux that, given their isolation, he could kill him without immediate repercussions. Hux retorts that Supreme Leader Snoke could read his mind and discover his actions. Ren then extinguishes his lightsaber.

Despite their mutual animosity, they acknowledge the need to collaborate to survive. They soon discover a roll of meat, which Hux recognizes as bait. They are then attacked by two massive blue creatures identified as Norwoods. Ren defends himself using his lightsaber and Force powers but is eventually knocked down. Just as the beasts are about to attack Hux, an elderly human man commands the Norwoods to cease their attack.

Rebel, Now Stranded

The man tends to the unconscious Ren and instructs Hux to come out of hiding. He explains that he has trained the Norwoods and has been stranded on the planet for an extended period. Hux recognizes the man as a survivor of Alderaan's destruction and a former Alderaan Guard. The man reveals that he sought refuge on the planet to avoid the Galactic Civil War. He is unaware that Hux belongs to the First Order, a successor to the Galactic Empire.

After the man introduces himself as Bylsma, Hux informs him that the Galactic Civil War is over and that the Empire has fallen. When Bylsma questions the truthfulness of his statement, Hux reveals that Ren is the son of Leia Organa, the last Princess of Alderaan. He tells Bylsma that Ren's parents were victorious in the war and destroyed the Empire's two Death Stars. Without revealing his true allegiance, Hux mentions that the Empire has been reduced to remnants and that he and Ren are working on something that would finally bring peace and order to the galaxy.

Hux asserts that he knew Kylo Ren's grandfather and mother, describing Leia as an incredible woman. Hux inquires why Bylsma remains hidden on the planet. Bylsma responds that he avoided transmitting signals to evade the Empire and prevent the potential loss of another world. After assuring Bylsma that Darth Vader and the Emperor are dead, Hux persuades Bylsma to allow him to use his communications array to reach the wider galaxy.

Upon Ben's awakening, Hux reassures him that he has contacted their allies, who have dispatched a shuttle. Hux tells Ben that his mother must be worried but that they will be home soon thanks to Bylsma. Shortly thereafter, Captain Phasma arrives aboard an Atmospheric Assault Lander accompanied by several stormtroopers. To Bylsma's dismay, the stormtroopers open fire on his beloved Norwoods, killing them.

Hux instructs Phasma not to kill Bylsma but to destroy his communications array and designate his planet as target practice for Starkiller Base. He orders Phasma to compile a list of all personnel who had access to the sabotaged shuttle before bidding farewell to Bylsma.

Settling the Score

Back at Starkiller Base, General Hux informs Supreme Leader Snoke that he believes he has identified the individual responsible for sabotaging the shuttle. Ren vows to punish the saboteur. Hux convinces Snoke to allow him to handle the saboteur personally, claiming that he will be less messy than Ren. Snoke grants Hux permission to deal with the traitor.

Privately, Ren tells Snoke that Hux is untrustworthy because he seeks to usurp his position and kill him. Snoke replies that Hux wants to kill a lot of people and does not take it personally. Snoke says that men like Hux are useful "when consumed with ambition fueled by spite", "can set pride aside", and "who have shame burning inside them." Snoke describes abused pipes as vicious creatures who never forget where they came from and who never forgive those who wronged them.

Together with Captain Phasma, Hux confronts Admiral Brooks and disarms him. Hux confronts Brooks at gunpoint. Brooks denies sabotaging Hux's shuttle, but Hux reveals that they have identified a radar technician as the saboteur. Hux adds that Brooks was the technician's superior and that responsibility ultimately lies with him.

Brooks initially feigns innocence but then insults Hux, calling him "spineless" and claiming that his father shared that opinion. Hux agrees and reveals that it was one of the reasons he had his father killed. Hux shoots Brooks in the shoulder, telling him that he, Snoke, and Ren underestimate him. Brooks begs for mercy, but Hux counters that he sees him as something that he can control.

Hux tells Brooks that he has the power to destroy worlds, while Brooks only has the power to destroy people. He vows to outlive Brooks and to hold more power than him. Before gunning Brooks down, he vows that Brooks will not live to see him succeed.
