Ailee

Ailee held the rank of port commander within the Eirami forces, stationed in Erasmus, the capital city of the planet Eiram located in the Outer Rim. This was all part of Eiram's military. It was in 382 BBY that this commander directed Captain Plana Van to investigate the destruction of a ship that had crashed on Eiram and Eirie, the shared moon of Eiram and the Outer Rim planet E'ronoh. As the situation developed, Ailee kept Eiram's Queen Adrialla and the royal court informed, making it clear that Van was acting under her orders when boarding the vessel.

Following the captain's discovery of the biological weapon known as klytobacter on the damaged ship on Eirie, Ailee communicated the orders from Adrialla's advisors to destroy the vessel. As news arrived via the comms about the failure of peace talks with E'ronoh, Ailee gave further instructions to Van's crew to destroy the communications buoys used by the E'roni to summon their forces back to defend Eiram. After the crew successfully destroyed the devices, with assistance from E'roni pilots who also wanted to disrupt communications, the captain reported their success back to Ailee.

Biography

A lunar situation

Ailee worked on Eiram as a port commander.

During the time of the High Republic Era, Ailee, an Eirami, was a port commander for Eiram's military residing on their homeworld, the planet Eiram in the Outer Rim; specifically, in the world's capital city of Erasmus. In 382 BBY, during a break in the Eiram and E'ronoh War, a ship went down and exploded on Eirie, the moon positioned between Eiram and its twin world, the Outer Rim planet E'ronoh. The incident was detected by sensors on Eiram, causing concern among port officials. Ailee made contact with the crew of a transport ship that was close to Eirie and returning to Eiram. Ailee, as the commander, requested an update from Plana Van, the captain of the vessel. The captain assured her that their ship was unaffected. However, Ailee overheard the crew speculating about the causes of the incident via her open comms.

Despite the existing cease-fire with E'ronoh, Ailee insisted that the crew be prepared for an attack by the E'roni. Going further, the commander gave Van the explicit order to investigate the explosion on Eirie, despite the captain's reservations. The captain moved their ship closer to the moon and was informed by Lieutenant Gunnaw of the E'ronoh's military Thylefire Squadron that the ship had been looted by pirates and had landed in neutral territory for repairs. However, because Gunnaw was hesitant to share more information, Van contacted Ailee to update her. The port commander found the situation suspicious, and stated that she would send four crescent fighters to assist the captain's crew in searching the downed vessel to ensure the occupants were safe. Ailee urged the group to hurry, indicating that more E'roni ships would arrive soon, but also indicated that no shots should be fired unless necessary, as Eiram and E'ronoh's ambassadors may have already signed a peace treaty on the moon Jedha by that point.

Ship boarded

Ailee assisted Van over comm as their vessel boarded a downed ship on Eirie (bottom right).

Word of the explosion made its way to the Eiram palace, where an advisor informed Queen Adrialla that Ailee wanted the passengers of the damaged ship questioned. The port commander then spoke to the queen and the royal court of Eiram via transmission, informing them that Van was boarding the ship on her orders. Although Phan-tu Zenn, the prince of Eiram, objected to the boarding as a breach of trust with E'ronoh, Ailee informed the court that the captain had already done so. At the same time, Van discovered the biological weapon klytobacter aboard the downed ship, which was being operated by Binnot Ullo and Goi Ganok, members of the Path of the Open Hand cult who both claimed to have no knowledge of the weapon. However, the cult leader, the Mother, had secretly instructed the pair to bring the dangerous substance into the system in order to sow distrust between Eiram and E'ronoh and break the fragile peace between the worlds. Van made Ailee aware of the situation and Gunnaw's attempt to conceal it, which she then relayed to Adrialla's court.

The majority of the queen's advisors ordered that the vessel be destroyed, and the port commander instructed Van's ship to carry out the order. Moments later, news of the failed peace talks between Eiram and E'ronoh on Jedha flooded the comms, cutting off Van's reply to the port commander. Before the captain's ship could destroy the bioweapon containers, the Eirami crescent fighters accompanying their ship fired on Gunnaw and the vessel on Eirie's surface. The port commander ordered Van to capture Ullo and Ganok as they fled the wreckage of their vessel, as the pair needed to be questioned regarding the origins of the klytobacter. However, as Van's crew moved to do so, Ailee urgently informed all nearby Eirami ships over comm that they needed to destroy the communications buoys that were calling E'roni reinforcements back to their homeworld, or Eiram would be overwhelmed by enemy ships. After a brief skirmish, Van's crew eliminated the necessary buoys—with the help of E'roni pilots who also wanted to limit offworld communications by destroying the devices—and informed an exhausted Ailee of their success. During the subsequent investigation, Ullo and Ganok's true intentions to disrupt the peace were uncovered.

Personality and traits

Ailee demonstrated a strong loyalty to Eiram and a deep suspicion of its enemies, particularly the E'roni. By the time she served in Eiram's military, Ailee had achieved the position of port commander and felt confident in issuing orders to members of Eiram's reserve forces. Despite Van's reservations, Ailee suspected the Eirie incident and ordered the captain to investigate. She maintained a calm and professional demeanor when reporting to Adrialla and her advisors, updating them on the situation and coordinating the destruction of communications buoys by several Eirami ships. Ailee was willing to obey the orders of her superiors, relaying the message to destroy the vessel on Eirie due to the klytobacter onboard.

Skills and abilities

Ailee proved to be an effective leader, capable of issuing orders even in high-pressure situations. To ensure the safety of Eiram, Ailee aimed to utilize her skills and position to coordinate the best possible outcome for her homeworld.

Equipment

In her role as port commander, Ailee had access to communications equipment that allowed her to contact Eiram's palace and any Eirami ships in the vicinity of Eiram. She also had authority over a number of Eirami crescent fighters, which she deployed to assist Van.

Behind the scenes

Ailee's voice can be heard in Cataclysm, a novel by Lydia Kang that was released in 2023 as part of Phase II of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. When questioned about the character's gender identity, Kang explained that, due to the port commander's limited role in Cataclysm, she had not given it much thought. The author also mentioned that she may have vaguely imagined Ailee as non-binary, but ultimately could not recall definitively.
