Originating from Humbarine, the capital planet of the Humbarine sector, Bana Breemu was a human who was native to that world. She represented the Humbarine sector as a senator in the Republic's Galactic Senate during the Clone Wars that raged between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Humbarine sector experienced intense combat during the war, including the Separatist bombardment that struck Humbarine.
A growing concern arose among a number of senators, including Breemu, as Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine accumulated emergency powers throughout the Clone Wars without any official method of retracting them. This led to the formation of the Delegation of 2,000, a group associated with a petition presented to Palpatine, which Breemu joined. Following the conclusion of the war in 19 BBY, several senators who had been members of the delegation were apprehended by the newly formed Galactic Empire. Breemu possessed tan skin, brown eyes, and black hair. Her attire consisted of a violet dress accompanied by a matching hood and sleeves, along with black shoes.
The character Bana Breemu was conceived for the prequel trilogy movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which premiered on May 19, 2005. Actress Bai Ling played the part, appearing in a single scene where a group of senators convened in Senator Padmé Amidala's apartment on the planet Coruscant, discussing the potential formation of the Delegation of 2,000 due to their worries about Palpatine. When Amidala suggested seeking guidance from a trusted Jedi, Breemu voiced her concern about the danger involved, but later acknowledged that their stance might shift after presenting the petition to the chancellor.
Ling secured the role after developing a friendship with Katie Lucas, the daughter of director George Lucas, at the 2003 MTV Music Awards. Katie introduced the actress to George, and Ling expressed her lifelong aspiration to be a part of Star Wars. Two weeks later, her agent contacted her, informing her of the offer for a role in the upcoming movie. Her scene was then filmed on Stage 1 at Fox Studios, Sydney on July 2, 2003. Ling likened the filming experience to being in an amusement park or children playing with toys. Before the cameras rolled, she inquired of Lucas about his expectations, to which he replied "whatever you want," granting the actress a level of artistic freedom that she deeply valued.
The scene featuring Breemu in the film was ultimately removed before its theatrical debut, but it was later included as a deleted scene in home media releases. Ling has suggested that this decision might have stemmed from her posing for a Star Wars-themed pictorial in Playboy magazine around the time of the film's release. However, George maintained that the cuts were made nearly a year prior to her photoshoot due to the film's length.
Before the release of Revenge of the Sith, Breemu made her first appearance in the Star Wars Legends storyline in Labyrinth of Evil, a prequel tie-in novel to the film by James Luceno that was released on January 25, 2005. Within the current Star Wars canon, the character received her initial mention outside of the deleted scene in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.
