"Blade Squadron: Kuat" is a short story, featuring artwork by Chris Trevas, penned by both Mark S. Williams and David J. Williams. It serves as a tie-in to the novel Aftermath: Life Debt and saw its publication in Star Wars Insider 168 on September 7, 2016.
Lieutenant Gina Moonsong, a starfighter pilot of the New Republic, takes to the skies in her B-wing during the assault targeting Kuat Drive Yards. The New Republic Defense Fleet has made the decision to strike at the Galactic Empire's primary source of weaponry, a location heavily defended by substantial Imperial forces. After days of intense combat, neither side has managed to secure a decisive advantage. Commodore Kyrsta Agate issues an order for all New Republic squadrons to withdraw to their respective capital ships. Lieutenant Moonsong then transmits this order to her own Blade Squadron.
Aboard the MC80 Star Cruiser known as the Amalthea, Moonsong is appointed as the acting squadron leader for Blade Squadron. Her superior officer, Captain Tane, is reassigned to Combat Operations Planning. Moonsong, along with fellow pilot leaders Fanty, Lieutenant Sandara Li, and Johan Volk, participate in a briefing led by Commander Braylen Stramm. Given the New Republic fleet's insufficient firepower for a single, overwhelming strike against the Imperial defenses, Stramm suggests a series of precise attacks targeting vital components of the shipyards' infrastructure, including fuel depots, supply monorails, and sensor arrays. For this particular mission, the X-wing starfighters will continue their role of escorting the B-wing bomber group. Select elements of the New Republic fleet will engage the enemy Star Destroyers in order to divert their attention.
Subsequently, Moonsong spearheads Blade Squadron's attack aimed at the supply monorail. Their objective is to cripple the shipyard's ability to transport supplies and ammunition. However, the monorail finds itself protected by numerous Imperial walkers, including AT-ATs, AT-ACTs, and even older AT-TEs. X-wing leader Lieutenant Li expresses a desire to engage the walkers, but Moonsong instructs her to instead provide protection against the TIE fighters. Despite this order, the X-wings engage the walkers, which are heavily armored.
With the X-wings now occupied, Moonsong leads her B-wing starfighters in an assault on the gun emplacements positioned along the monorail. She also directs them to deploy proton torpedoes against the walkers. Moonsong and Blade Squadron unleash a barrage of ordnance upon the Imperial walkers, effectively eliminating the monorail's escorts. However, one of Blade Squadron's pilots is lost during the engagement. Later, Moonsong confronts Li, reprimanding her for her insubordination in disobeying the order to protect the B-wings from the TIE fighters. When Li implies that Moonsong's appointment as acting squadron leader was due to favoritism from her boyfriend Tane, Moonsong retorts that Li lacks the experience to understand that her weaponry would have been ineffective against the walkers' armor. The two reconcile with a handshake.
After a period of rest, Blade Squadron, along with two other B-wing squadrons, launches an attack on the Imperial command hub while the remainder of the New Republic fleet engages the main Imperial fleet in a battle above the planet Kuat's north pole. Despite the New Republic's diversionary tactics, the Imperials manage to assemble a makeshift squadron of TIE fighters to intercept the B-wings. Lieutenant Li suggests that the B-wings maintain their positions to provide cover for her X-wings. However, Moonsong instead persuades all the B-wing pilots to set their laser cannons to rapid fire and target the ion cannons located beyond their primary target.
As the B-wings engage in a firefight with the TIE fighters, Li leads the X-wings directly into the core of the enemy formation. With the TIEs preoccupied, Moonsong guides the B-wings in an attack on the command hub, utilizing laser-guided bombs and torpedoes. After successfully destroying the command hub, Moonsong and the B-wings return to base. Back aboard the Amalthea, Moonsong learns that her former romantic partner, Commander Stramm, will be piloting an X-wing for the next assault, as the X-wing pilot Volk is currently in the infirmary. Despite the lingering bitterness from their past breakup, Moonsong accepts Stramm's request to fly the next mission together.
In the subsequent assault, the New Republic fleet engages the Imperial fleet in a structured battle formation. The Imperials deploy a large number of TIE fighters, TIE bombers, TIE interceptors, and heavily armed shuttles in a desperate attempt to breach the New Republic's cruiser formation. The New Republic responds by deploying every available fighter in the fleet against the Imperial vessels. Escorted by Stramm's and Li's X-wings, Moonsong and her fellow B-wing pilots proceed to bomb the hangar bay of an Imperial light carrier.
Just as Moonsong and her fellow pilots are about to provide assistance to the carrier Amalthea, they receive word that Moff Pollus Maksim, the commander of Kuat Drive Yards, has surrendered. Gina and her comrades, relieved that the intense fighting has come to an end, decide to return to their ship.
