A human female named Kyrsta Agate held the rank of commander within the Starfleet of the New Republic. She participated in several meetings with New Republic officials, where they deliberated on the evolving mission taking place on the planet Akiva. Fleet Admiral Ackbar personally selected her to command the New Republic forces during the Rebellion on Akiva. By 5 ABY, Agate had earned a promotion to the rank of Commodore and was in command of the New Republic's military presence at the Defense of Kuat. Later on, she barely survived an assassination attempt during the attack that occurred on Chandrila.
Agate suffered disfigurement and the loss of an eye. Despite a period of depression, Agate resumed her role as a Commodore in the New Republic. During the Battle of Jakku, she commanded the Starhawk-class battleship called Concord. Agate's contribution was crucial in the destruction of the Imperial Super Star Destroyer known as Ravager. Although Agate died during the assault on the Ravager, her courageous actions shifted the momentum of the battle in favor of the New Republic.
Following the Battle of Endor, Kyrsta Agate served as a commander in the New Republic Defense Fleet. As a high-ranking officer, she was aware of Admiral Gial Ackbar's clandestine communications with an Imperial informant referred to as the Operator. Commander Agate had sufficient trust in Ensign Deltura to share this sensitive information with the young cadet. Later, she participated in a hologram meeting alongside Admiral Ackbar, Captain Saff Melor, General Crix Madine, and Chancellor Mon Mothma, who had recently been appointed, to evaluate the Operator's credibility and the possibility of deploying military forces to the planet of Akiva.
During the meeting, Agate expressed her belief in the Operator's trustworthiness, but Admiral Ackbar cautioned that the Galactic Empire might be setting a trap. Captain Melor advocated for sending the fleet, but Chancellor Mothma advised against a show of force in the Outer Rim Territories. Admiral Ackbar then successfully persuaded the group to authorize a small scouting party of New Republic Special Forces to investigate the situation on Akiva.

Subsequently, Commander Agate, along with General Madine, Chancellor Mothma, and Ensign Deltura, were present when Admiral Ackbar received a transmission from Akiva from Captain Wedge Antilles, who warned of a high-level Imperial summit taking place there. She listened as Admiral Ackbar tasked her with leading a small fleet to support the rebellion on Akiva. During the ensuing battle, Agate commanded her forces from the bridge of the Alderaanian frigate named Sunspire.
Upon entering the Akiva system, Agate fought to maintain her composure and learned that a yacht was en route to one of the orbiting Imperial Star Destroyers. When Klatooinian Ensign Targada inquired about shooting down the yacht, she instructed him to refrain from doing so, as it might contain intelligence crucial to the New Republic's war efforts. Instead, she directed him to focus fire on the Star Destroyer to prevent its escape. This Star Destroyer turned out to be the flagship Vigilance, commanded by Admiral Rae Sloane.
Agate's fleet proceeded to destroy two of the orbiting Imperial Star Destroyers. When Pantoran Ensign Uray informed her that they were winning the engagement, Agate cautioned that winning was not yet a certainty and instructed him to maintain the pressure. Uray then reported that Norra Wexley, a starfighter pilot from the New Republic, had commandeered a TIE fighter and claimed to be associated with Gold Squadron. Agate ordered her crew to provide Norra with assistance and establish communication with her. With the defeat of Imperial forces, the New Republic secured control of Akiva, which subsequently joined the burgeoning government.
By 5 ABY, Kyrsta Agate had achieved the rank of Commodore within the New Republic Starfleet. She was placed in command of the Starhawk-class battleship Concord, one of the New Republic capital ships constructed at the Nadiri Dockyards located within the Bormea sector. As Commodore, Agate led a task force comprising the Concord and her former ship, the Sunspire, to rescue Lieutenant Norra Wexley and Captain Antilles, who were under attack by Imperial forces on the fringes of Wild Space. She oversaw the destruction of the Imperial Star Destroyer Scythe.
After Norra and Wedge were safely aboard the Concord, Agate lectured Norra on the subject of war and the act of killing. She emphasized that she did not want her soldiers to become remorseless killers, but rather individuals who abhorred the act of taking a life. When Norra suggested that this stance might lead to their defeat in the war, Agate countered that they would ultimately lose the war by compromising their principles. Agate then informed Norra that she had spoken with Captain Antilles, who had shared information about Norra's mission to locate the rebel hero Han Solo. Agate clarified that they had no orders to find Solo, as he had already resigned his commission as a general.
Later, at the Chandrilan capital of Hanna City, Commodore Agate, Admiral Ackbar, and Captain Antilles convened with Norra and her team, which consisted of her son Temmin, his B1-series battle droid Mister Bones, Sinjir Rath Velus a former Imperial loyalty officer, Jom Barell a New Republic soldier, and Jas Emari a Zabrak bounty hunter. When Admiral Ackbar instructed Norra and her team to abandon their search for Solo and resume their pursuit of Imperial war criminals, Norra chose to resign her commission in the New Republic military to continue her search for Solo.
Commodore Agate and Admiral Ackbar later commanded New Republic forces during the successful campaign to seize control of Kuat and the strategically significant Kuat Drive Yards. During the battle, Imperial casualties exceeded New Republic losses. Following the battle, Princess Leia Organa contacted Admiral Ackbar and Commodore Agate via hologram to commend them on their victory. Agate considered the removal of weapons from the Empire's control to be a worthwhile objective and praised the Galactic Senate for their support.
Shortly thereafter, Chancellor Mon Mothma contacted them, informing them that they had received communication from the Operator. Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, now the public face of the Empire, joined the conversation, claiming to be the Operator. Commodore Agate, along with Admiral Ackbar and Princess Leia, expressed skepticism regarding Sloane's claim. When Sloane inquired about her identity, Agate identified herself. The Grand Admiral then recognized her as the commander who led the charge at Kuat and commended her for her victory.
When Agate pointed out that Sloane had been a member of the Imperial Future Council on Akiva, casting doubt on her claim to be the Operator, Sloane responded that she had provided them with targets to eliminate her rivals within the Empire. Agate and the others listened as Sloane offered to engage in bilateral peace talks with the New Republic. After some deliberation, Chancellor Mothma accepted Sloane's offer, contingent upon Senate approval. After Mothma concluded the conversation, Leia expressed her hope that the Force would be with Agate and Ackbar.

In reality, Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax had manipulated Grand Admiral Sloane into initiating diplomatic channels with the New Republic. Rax was the true mastermind controlling the remnants of the Empire and was orchestrating an attack on Chandrila. This attack involved newly liberated rebel prisoners from Ashmead's Lock who had been implanted with inorganic bio-chips, allowing Rax to control them remotely. Rax intended to use these unwilling pawns to assassinate the New Republic's leadership and create chaos within the fledgling Republic.
One month later, Commodore Agate attended the Liberation Day celebrations, held to commemorate the liberation of the Ashmead's Lock prisoners. These festivities were intended to precede the Imperial-Republic peace negotiations. After Rax transmitted an order via transponder, the prisoners involuntarily attacked the New Republic's leaders and military officers. Agate was attacked by a Rodian man named Esdo, who shot her in the face. Norra saved Agate's life, but she sustained severe facial injuries that required extensive reconstructive surgery.
After the Attack on Chandrila, Agate underwent extensive facial reconstruction. She received a mechanical eye, and the burned portion of her face was covered in nu-skin. Initially, Agate struggled to accept her facial disfigurement. Feeling dejected, she relinquished her command of the Concord. However, shortly before the Battle of Jakku, Admiral Ackbar invited her to rejoin the New Republic Starfleet. After the Galactic Senate passed a resolution authorizing the deployment of military forces to Jakku, Agate reported for duty aboard the Concord.
When Agate voiced her reservations, Admiral Ackbar assured her that she was one of his most capable commanders. He also commended her willingness to acknowledge the burden of war and her refusal to succumb to anger towards the Empire. When Agate mentioned that she had relinquished her command of the Concord, Ackbar replied that he had reinstated her and that Lieutenant Commander Spohn was prepared to serve under her command. Agate admitted that she was not ready, but the Admiral reassured her that no one was ever truly ready for war.
The two military officers then discussed intelligence indicating that the Empire was preparing for a major fleet engagement. When Agate inquired whether this battle would mark the end of the Empire and the dawn of a new galaxy, Ackbar replied that regardless of the outcome, he would be honored to fight alongside her. After grappling with doubt and fear, Agate bid farewell to Ackbar before assuming her post.
While commanding the Concord, Agate struggled to maintain her composure in the presence of her crew, including Ensign Sirai and Lieutenant Commander Spohn. During the space battle, the Imperial fleet formed a tight defensive perimeter around the Super Star Destroyer Ravager, the Imperial command ship. Throughout the battle, the Imperial ships would periodically break formation to allow the Ravager to bombard the New Republic fleet. Commodore Agate led the Concord and its sister ships Unity and Amity in an attempt to penetrate the Imperial formation.

As the battle wore on, Captain Groff of the Star Destroyer Punishment panicked and rammed his ship into the Amity, resulting in the destruction of both vessels. This created a breach that exposed the Concord to the Ravager's firepower. Admiral Ackbar ordered Agate and her crew to abandon ship. While her crew evacuated, Agate decided to launch a frontal assault on the Ravager, utilizing her ship's full firepower and arsenal. When Admiral Ackbar ordered her to abandon ship, Agate instead persuaded him to dispatch starfighters and CR90 corvettes to target the Ravager's rear engines.
Despite his initial reservations, Agate convinced Ackbar to trust her judgment. The Concord was eventually crippled by the Ravager's turbolasers and began its descent into Jakku's atmosphere. However, Agate then activated her starship's powerful tractor beams, ensnaring the Super Star Destroyer. The Concord dragged the Ravager down onto Jakku's surface. With its engines disabled by New Republic ships, the Ravager was unable to break free. Both ships crashed onto Jakku's surface. Agate perished in the crash, but her actions incapacitated the Imperial flagship and shifted the momentum of the Battle of Jakku in favor of the New Republic. This marked the last major engagement of the Galactic Civil War. Her friend Admiral Ackbar offered a prayer for the Force to embrace her.
Agate was a skilled military officer and soldier, rising to the rank of commander. At the onset of battle, war nerves and adrenaline would cause Agate's hands to tremble violently. For years, she tried to conceal this during the initial moments of battle or use medication to suppress the impulse, but Agate eventually realized that displaying her affliction demonstrated greater strength than hiding it. She was a capable commander who recognized the importance of gathering intelligence.
As Commodore, Agate was committed to ensuring that she and her subordinates adhered to the New Republic's command structure. Agate disliked killing and did not want her subordinates to become unrepentant killers. Her commitment to the command structure prompted her to reprimand Lieutenant Norra Wexley and Captain Wedge Antilles for embarking on an unauthorized mission to rescue Han Solo. Later, Agate expressed skepticism regarding Grand Admiral Rae Sloane's claim to be the Operator, pointing out Sloane's participation in the Imperial summit on Akiva. Nevertheless, she deferred to Chancellor Mon Mothma's decision to engage in peace talks with the Empire.
During the Attack on Chandrila, a blaster fired by a reluctant Rodian assassin destroyed half of Agate's face. She also suffered a broken jaw and lost several teeth. As a result of her injuries, the burned portion of Agate's face was covered with synthetic nu-skin. She was also fitted with a mechanical eye. Agate initially struggled to cope with her disfigurement and the change in her voice. Despite relinquishing her command of the Concord, Agate later returned at the urging of her mentor, Admiral Ackbar, who recognized her inner strength and leadership abilities.
Like Admiral Ackbar, Agate also believed in the Force. During the Battle of Jakku, Agate sacrificed her life to destroy the Imperial flagship Ravager. Despite grappling with fear and doubt, she found the courage and strength to continue fulfilling her duties as Commodore, even in the face of death. Agate's selfless actions contributed to turning the tide of the battle in the New Republic's favor.
Kyrsta Agate is a supporting character in Chuck Wendig's Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy novels, which were published between 2015 and 2017.
