Brethupp, an Ewok native to the forest moon of Endor, resided within Bright Tree Village. During the events of 4 ABY, he stood in the village's central area when a scouting expedition brought in captured rebel soldiers. As the Ewoks prepared a feast to honor the protocol droid C-3PO, whom they mistakenly believed to be a deity, Brethupp initially approached the prisoner Han Solo. However, after the captive Luke Skywalker used the Force to lifted the droid into the air, Brethupp, following the instructions of the shaman Logray, hurried to liberate the prisoners.
Soon after, the Ewoks decided to support the rebels in their fight against the Galactic Empire on Endor, joining them in battle the following day. After the alliance's victory over the Imperials, celebrations took place in the village, where Brethupp drummed on a collection of Imperial helmets acquired as war trophies.
Brethupp was a member of the Bright Tree tribe, an Ewok group inhabiting Bright Tree Village located on Endor's forest moon of Endor. In 4 ABY, he was present in the village center when a scouting party, led by the Ewok Teebo, returned with a group of rebel offworlders captured in an Ewok net trap. The captives, bound beneath wooden poles, were placed in the village, with the smuggler Han Solo positioned above an unlit fire pit. Brethupp moved to tend to the pit under Solo as C-3PO, a protocol droid ally of the captives whom the Ewoks mistook for the deity known as the Golden One, sat on a throne in the square.
While C-3PO conversed with the tribe's shaman, Brethupp navigated through a crowd of Ewoks gathered before the droid, carrying a spear. When the droid failed to dissuade the Ewoks from cooking his friends as part of a feast in his honor, the Jedi Luke Skywalker, one of the captives, employed the Force to lift C-3PO and his throne high above the assembled Ewoks. The terrified Ewoks scattered from the center, and Brethupp ran toward Princess Leia Organa, a village guest and ally of the captives, before standing beside the captive astromech droid R2-D2. Logray swiftly ordered the prisoners' release, and Brethupp joined the group that rushed forward to free them.

Soon after, the rebels were welcomed into the tribe, and Chief Chirpa announced that they would assist the rebels in attacking a shield generator bunker established on the moon by the Galactic Empire. The following day, the Ewoks and rebels successfully destroyed the bunker, enabling an Alliance fleet to subsequently destroy the Death Star II, an Imperial superweapon orbiting the moon. That night, the Ewoks celebrated with their new rebel allies in the village. During the festivities, Brethupp played a trophy collection of Imperial helmets as drums.

Kiran Shah played Brethupp in the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. The Ewok village scenes were filmed on Stage 3 at Elstree Studios between January 18 and February 2, 1982.
