By Whatever Sun

"By Whatever Sun" is a brief narrative featured within the collection titled From a Certain Point of View. This tale, collaboratively crafted by E. K. Johnston and Ashley Eckstein, centers its focus on Miara Larte, a character who initially appeared in Johnston's novel, Ahsoka.

Plot summary

Within the Great Temple located on Yavin 4, Captain Miara Larte, together with her team of Alderaanian consular security members, are positioned at the forefront of the chamber for the medal ceremony which is meant to honor the heroes of the Battle of Yavin. Jessamyn, one of the security members, questions the appropriateness of holding such a ceremony given the Rebel Alliance's recent setbacks. A gunner, whose name is either Hester or Heattens, responds by saying that it is imperative that they take some sort of action. Similar to Miara, this gunner was not present on Alderaan at the time of the Death Star's devastating attack.

Due to their Alderaanian heritage, Miara and her fellow crew members were granted the honor of standing at the head of the procession. The expansive cavern within the rebel base on Yavin 4 is filled with numerous rebel soldiers in uniform. A considerable number of these soldiers are refugees originating from planets ravaged by the Galactic Empire, including Fest, her home of Raada, Jedha, and Alderaan. Nevertheless, Miara remains deeply concerned about the significant losses endured by the Rebellion in recent weeks. Miara reflects on her prior home of Raada and how Neera once saved her life with a stun blast. She feels gratitude to the Organa family for their rescue and for providing them with both a home and a purpose.

Miara focuses her attention on Princess Leia Organa, whom she views as an embodiment of hope. Miara manages to overcome her sorrow by contemplating the princess's own personal losses. Miara also contemplates her elder sister Kaeden Larte, who had managed to provide them with food and clothing through sheer determination. Kaeden had become a medical professional working aboard a Republic medical frigate. In contrast to her sister, Miara chose to become a starfighter pilot within the Rebellion after witnessing A-wing starfighter pilots in action above Raada. Miara had ascended to the rank of captain with the aid of the late Senator Bail Organa.

While contemplating the Rebellion's urgent need for pilots, Miara is brought back to the present by the sound of music. She observes Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca as they traverse the entire length of the cavern, making their way to the front of the podium. The sight of the young Skywalker evokes memories of her childhood experiences as a resistance fighter on Raada. Miara expresses her gratitude to the Rebellion for providing her with training and the necessary tools for survival. Miara watches as R2-D2 makes his way forward to stand alongside C-3PO. R2-D2's beeping harmonizes with the music, while Chewbacca's roar brings tears to Jessamyn's eyes.

Miara comes to the realization that the celebration serves as a means to balance the positive with the negative, ensuring that neither is forgotten or erased. Miara finds encouragement in Leia's smile. Despite the destruction of Raada and Alderaan, Miara finds solace in the fact that her sister is still alive and, most importantly, that she herself has survived. Miara is also heartened by the fact that she still has her crew and ship, and she eagerly anticipates their next mission. With tears of grief on her cheeks and hope in her heart, Miara joins the other rebels in celebrating the living and honoring the dead. Miara, reflecting on her rebel career since the uprising on Raada, and everything she has gained and lost, ultimately concludes that it is indeed appropriate. She resolves to face the future and continue her fight.

Raada is mistakenly identified as a planet, instead of its correct designation as a moon.
