Byph was a male Ithorian youngling undergoing training to become a Jedi during the era of the Clone Wars. As the war raged, Byph, along with five other initiates, was chosen for a journey to the planet Ilum. There, they would participate in a ritual known as the Gathering, with the purpose of finding kyber crystals to be used in the construction of their very first lightsaber.

Approximately two years into the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars], Byph, along with fellow Jedi younglings such as Petro, Katooni, Gungi, Ganodi, and Zatt, who were considered the best in their group, were dispatched to the planet Ilum to acquire the necessary kyber crystals for crafting their own lightsabers. During this trial, Byph had to conquer his personal anxieties to successfully obtain his crystal. Following this, he and the other younglings were escorted by Ahsoka Tano to the Crucible, a starship where the architect droid named Huyang would instruct them on how to build their lightsaber weapons. While Byph and his companions were in the process of constructing their lightsabers, Weequay pirates, under the leadership of Hondo Ohnaka, boarded the vessel. Although the Jedi were able to repel the pirates, the Weequay managed to capture Tano before retreating to the nearby planet of Florrum.
After getting in touch with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and finding out he was unable to provide assistance, Byph and the other younglings were compelled to land on Florrum, the location where Tano was being held captive. By disguising themselves as members of a circus troupe, the younglings successfully infiltrated Ohnaka's lair and liberated Tano before making an attempt to escape from the clutches of the pirates.
Their escape attempt failed, resulting in the capture of the younglings. However, shortly after their capture, Separatist forces launched an assault on Florrum, compelling the Jedi and the pirates to join forces. Through their cooperation, both groups managed to flee Florrum and reconnect with forces from the Galactic Republic, who subsequently allowed the pirates to go free.
