Clone Intelligence was the military intelligence arm of the Grand Army of the Republic. During the Clone Wars conflict, specialized clone espionage groups were given the assignment of locating General Grievous, a key commander of the Separatist forces and a high-priority target for the Galactic Republic.

Similar to the Grand Army of the Republic, Clone Intelligence consisted of soldiers who were cloned from the genetic template provided by Jango Fett and trained to loyally serve the Galactic Republic. Unlike the typical infantry trooper found in the Grand Army, Clone Intelligence operatives received specialized instruction to aid the Republic Military through espionage activities, including the pursuit of significant Separatist figures like General Grievous. They also furnished the Grand Army with intelligence reports on experimental weaponry being developed by the Confederacy military.

From the beginning days of the Clone Wars, Clone Intelligence personnel were active within the Grand Army of the Republic. In the year 22 BBY, the Confederacy of Independent Systems Navy deployed its newly built Subjugator-class heavy cruiser, known as the Malevolence, in its military actions against the Galactic Republic Navy. At that time, the Republic possessed limited data regarding this new warship; however, Clone Intelligence determined that the Malevolence was prioritizing the killing of any survivors who had witnessed its destructive capabilities.

Following the destruction of the Malevolence, its former commanding officer, General Grievous, became the subject of a dedicated search effort led by Clone Intelligence. Despite successfully tracking the cyborg general as far as the Balmorra system, Grievous was ultimately able to evade the clone operatives before the Republic could capitalize on their acquired intelligence.

In 19 BBY, the Republic intercepted a fragmented communication from the Utapau system located in the Outer Rim Territories. Using this information, Clone Intelligence was able to trace Grievous' location to the planet of Utapau. Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine shared these findings with Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, who then informed the High Council of the Jedi Order. Determined to bring an end to the galaxy-spanning Clone Wars, the Jedi Masters responded to Clone Intelligence's report with immediate and decisive action, deploying Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi with orders to eliminate Grievous.
Clone Intelligence maintained surveillance of the situation on Utapau as the battle unfolded between Republic clones and Separatist droids. Tech—a member of the CT-99 clones unit known as Clone Force 99—became aware of the Battle of Utapau after discovering Clone Intelligence's report through the Republic's secure communications network. At the time, Tech and his squad were supporting Jedi General Depa Billaba's forces during the Battle of Kaller. Despite suffering heavy losses of battle droids throughout the war, the Separatist Droid Army, under Grievous' command, continued to fight across numerous star systems, launching a "desperate and brutal counterattack," even as Republic forces continued to gain ground throughout the galaxy. The battlefront on Kaller saw intense combat between the Republic and Separatists. Billaba requested reinforcements from the Republic as her clones struggled to prevent the droids from overwhelming their position.

Although Billaba's troops defeated the droids with the help of Clone Force 99, they still faced another Separatist battalion, prompting the general to inquire about the arrival of her reinforcements. Clone Sergeant "Hunter" informed her that her battalion would not receive additional units as they had been diverted to the Republic capital of Coruscant, leaving Billaba with only the sergeant's squad. Tech, after discovering Clone Intelligence's report, realized that the Separatists were nearing defeat, making reinforcements unnecessary. Clone Captain Grey challenged the experimental clone's claim, pointing out the approaching battalion of battle droids. Tech explained to Billaba's clone trooper officer that his information came from the encrypted comm chatter, where he had learned that Clone Intelligence was reporting on the battle between Kenobi and Grievous on Utapau.
The newest member of Clone Force 99, Echo, reached the same conclusion as Tech, both having deduced from Clone Intelligence's report that the capture or death of General Grievous had the potential to end the Clone Wars, as the Separatist command structure and the droid armies depended on the cyborg warlord's leadership. While Billaba found the clones' theory interesting, she remained focused on the mission on Kaller for the Republic. As Billaba's forces prepared to counterattack the Separatists, Captain Grey received a holographic message from Chancellor Palpatine, ordering him to execute Order 66. The captain and the clones under his command, driven by their programming, complied, killing the Jedi Master who had been their general for years, but not before she instructed her Padawan, Caleb Dume, to escape.
