Force-bond

A Force-bond, alternatively referred to as a Force bond, Force chain, Jedi kinship, or simply a bond, represented a conduit through which two individuals sensitive to the Force could exert influence upon one another. Frequently observed between Jedi Masters and their respective apprentices, this connection facilitated the transmission of emotions, thoughts, and mental images across considerable distances, while also enhancing coordination during combat situations. It was through these very connections that the Force flowed with ease, occasionally empowering one participant to reinforce the strengths of the other, or even potentially draw upon their energies.

Description

The term "Force bonding" described the inherent ability to forge links within the Force. The extent to which this was achievable hinged upon the degree of Force-sensitivity possessed by the individuals involved, indicating that a stronger presence in the Force correlated with a more robust connection. While most living beings possessed a minimal capacity for establishing such connections, certain individuals were believed to exhibit a particular inclination towards it.

Typically, the establishment of Force bonds between a Jedi Master and a Padawan transpired gradually over a period, necessitating mutual growth and understanding. It was known that more potent bonds could arise between relatives, wielding significant influence. Traditionally, the Jedi Order separated children from their parents to prevent any adverse effects on their development as Jedi in utilizing the Force. Furthermore, it was suggested that moments of mortality, or near-death experiences, could instigate such bonds. Moreover, connections were observed to manifest when an individual was compelled to open themselves to the Force, or when imbued by a powerful Force wielder.

Applications

Master Ell

It was said that Force bonding could manifest in techniques such as Jedi battle meditation, which granted the ability to demoralize or inspire others, or in the practice of feeding upon the Force. According to HK-47, Darth Revan posited that many Jedi did not fully develop such connections due to their stringent discipline, which forbade them from embracing the passions surrounding them, resulting in a limited awareness of the full potential. Some Force wielders possessed a natural aptitude for bonding, establishing strong connections more readily than others, even with individuals possessing only a faint connection to the Force. Certain individuals could utilize their bonds to share knowledge.

According to Jedi Master Zez-Kai Ell, one of the most experienced and knowledgeable members of the Jedi Order regarding Force bonds, these bonds were not easily severed through choice and could not be completely eliminated. A shift in one party's emotions or their demise would be necessary, but this would result in a void or a wound in the Force.

Revan and Bastila Shan

Rumor had it that Revan extensively investigated Force Bonding throughout his numerous apprenticeships before departing for the Mandalorian Wars. As Darth Revan, he employed the Force to extract the Rakata language from the minds of the Rakata inhabiting Lehon and instill an understanding of Basic, enabling them to assist him in locating the Star Forge.

Bastila Shan and Revan cultivated their bond when she employed the Force to sustain his life following Malak's treachery, two years after the commencement of the Jedi Civil War. She utilized their bond to elicit Revan's forgotten memories, guiding him to lead the Jedi to the Star Forge, although this also exposed her to his dark influence. During the Battle of Rakata Prime, amplified by the power of the Star Forge, Shan's battle meditation could reach the minds of the two massive star fleets commanded by Admirals Varko and Forn Dodonna.

Meetra Surik and Kreia

Meetra Surik possessed an extraordinary, inherent capacity to effortlessly establish Force bonds with others, particularly those with a strong connection to the Force. Even during her Jedi training at the enclave on Dantooine, her talent garnered significant attention from the Council overseeing the training facility. While she remained largely unaware of her gift, it troubled some of the Jedi Masters because it allowed her to powerfully influence those around her. Vrook Lamar was notably disapproving of Surik, and even prone to take action against her, but his point of view did not convince higher-ranking Council member Vandar Tokare who did not believe her to be dangerous.

Kreia

Upon Surik's return to Republic space after years of isolation, she encountered Kreia on Peragus in 3951 BBY. Kreia guided Surik in rediscovering her connection to the Force after a decade of detachment, leading to the development of their bond. In this instance the bond was intended to occur, and took much less time to take root due to Surik's special predisposition. The strength of their bond seemed difficult to believe to most of the Jedi Masters of the High Council, especially for the fact that the bond had supposedly twined their lives, the death of one being lethal to the other.

As Surik journeyed to Onderon, Dantooine and Nar Shaddaa, she sought counsel from Masters Kavar, Lamar, and Zez-Kai Ell regarding potential methods for severing the bond, but none could provide a satisfactory resolution. Her bonding had gotten stronger and hungrier, and she quickly drew other Force-sensitives to her company. She led by example of something to uphold or something to fight against, and they echoed her, either fighting or surrendering their fights, and followed her without hesitation. Aware of her abilities, Jedi Master Atris even cautioned her handmaidens upon Surik's arrival at the Telosian Jedi Academy, fearing that her companions would fight for her. While the Council concluded Surik was dominating them with teachings of the Sith, companions such as Mical and Visas Marr argued that it was their ignorance and isolation that made them see doom where they saw a hope for all life, and that her talents did not stem from the Force, but from her being herself, a natural leader.

Kreia frequently instructed Surik from afar via telepathy. Their bond enabled Surik to comprehend as effectively as if her Master were physically present. Surik herself, seemingly just a quick learner, in actuality used her own bonding ability to feel what she wanted to learn in the person that held the knowledge. She sought Jedi Masters to impart forms of lightsaber combat and Force combat, astounding them with her rapid learning pace.

Ell asserted that if she could not alter the kinship out of which the bond was born, the only way to break it was to turn away from the Force, as Surik did on Malachor V, thus creating a wound in the Force. Kreia sought to influence Surik to pursue this outcome deliberately, as opposed to the chance of something to happen that would affect Kreia's hold over Surik, but that eventually happened when Kreia fell to the dark side.

Quillan and Dromika

The twin Sith Lords of the Dyarchy Quillan and his sister Dromika had a unique connection in the Force, while the twins were separated physically in body, they were conjoined through the Force which made them one inseparable being. They regarded all other agencies outside themselves including both sentient beings and droids as "aspects." Dromika was the only person able to contact Quillan since she shared the same Force plane that he dwelled within. She became an intermediary for her twin brother to communicate with other sentient beings. Unlike other Force bonds, Quillan was unable to communicate with his sister telepathically across great distances, since he had never trained to do it.

According to the Dyarchy's regent Saaj Calician, Sith scholars or physicians didn't understand the level of connection the twins had. The connection was so strong that no form of science or Sith alchemy could separate them.

Other Force bonds

Darth Nihilus elevated this practice to unprecedented levels, capable of influencing all life on a single planet, forming and consuming connections with countless individuals simultaneously.

Force-sensitives Aayla Secura and Quinlan Vos form an immediate Force bond.

The Force bond between the young Padawan Quinlan Vos and the Force-sensitive child Aayla Secura manifested almost instantaneously upon their initial encounter when the former rescued the latter from a Hutt's rampaging wampa guard.

Jem Ysanna and Luke Skywalker also shared a Force bond.
