Garsa Fwip

Madam Garsa Fwip was a Twi'lek female who owned the Sanctuary, a cantina situated in Mos Espa during the New Republic Era. Boba Fett, a former bounty hunter, established a new criminal empire on Tatooine, and he visited Fwip at the Sanctuary to ensure the continued success of her establishment. Fwip expressed her gratitude to Fett and placed the cantina under his protection. When the Twins attempted to seize Fett's territory, the cantina's proprietor informed the crime lord of their intentions.

Biography

A new criminal empire

Garsa Fwip wore an elegant black floral gown when she first met Boba Fett.

Garsa Fwip was the proprietor of the Sanctuary, a sophisticated club, casino, and cantina in Mos Espa, a city located on the desert planet of Tatooine, in 9 ABY during the New Republic Era. Following Boba Fett's ascension as the new leader of his criminal empire, subsequent to an attack on Jabba's Palace previously controlled by Bib Fortuna and, before him, Jabba Desilijic Tiure, the Daimyo and his second-in-command Fennec Shand journeyed to the Sanctuary to meet with Fwip and conduct business.

Upon their arrival, Fwip welcomed Fett and offered the services and products of her establishment. When the Daimyo indicated his desire to discuss business, she agreed but inquired if he wished to have his Gamorrean guards bathed and fed. Fett declined, asserting that the matter would be resolved swiftly. He then introduced Shand and himself, explaining that he had supplanted Fortuna. Fwip apologized for not noticing Fortuna's litter, as Hutt crime lords were often carried on one, to which Fett replied that he preferred to walk independently. The Daimyo stated that his visit was solely to introduce himself and assure her that the Sanctuary would prosper under his rule. Expressing her gratitude, Fwip bowed briefly to Fett, glanced at the bar, and clapped to signal her staff. She then thanked him further for traveling a great distance to visit her cantina, placing the establishment under his authority and patting his arm before departing. Her tribute to him was paid through a share of the business's profits.

The return of the Hutts

Shortly after a foiled attempt on Fett's life, in which an assassin was apprehended, claiming to have been dispatched by Mayor of Mos Espa Mok Shaiz, Fett questioned the mayor about his involvement. Shaiz denied the accusation but advised the Daimyo to seek answers at the Sanctuary. Upon Fett, Shand, and the two Gamorrean guards' arrival, the Twi'lek server discreetly informed Fwip of their presence, and the owner greeted them with a strained expression. She expressed her appreciation for Fett's patronage and offered him a seat at the bar and a drink, but Fett demanded to know what was happening.

Fwip was unsettled when discussing the matters of the Hutt Clan with Boba Fett.

Fwip feigned ignorance, prompting the crime lord to mention Shaiz's tip-off, adding that she was sweating profusely. After Fwip claimed to be unaware of recent events, the Twi'lek revealed that two of Jabba's cousins had claimed the criminal empire. Fett dismissed this, stating that the Twins were too occupied with other Hutt matters to concern themselves with Tatooine. However, the sound of drums grew louder, and Fwip looked towards the street outside. The entire cantina fell silent as the gangsters exited to confront the Hutt litter and hear their demands. Although Lord Fett refused to concede to the Twins, bloodshed was avoided in Mos Espa at that time.

The Krrsantan incident

Following the capture and release of the Wookiee mercenary Krrsantan by Fett's forces after a failed assassination attempt, Krrsantan was drinking at the Sanctuary one evening. Krrsantan attacked five Trandoshans who were gambling, lifting one into the air. Fwip intervened, chuckling as she recalled the Wookiee's gladiatorial career, praising his skill and reputation as she approached him. Acknowledging Krrsantan's renowned name, which had drawn thousands, and the fear inspired by his brass knuckles compared to blasters, Fwip suggested that he had already achieved victory and that dismembering the Trandoshan was beneath him. She offered her arm to him, stating that such a display was inappropriate for more "civilized" settings, labeling the violence of fighting pits as horror and cruelty.

Fwip tried to calm Krrsantan, ultimately to no avail.

When Krrsantan paused, Fwip inquired if he felt better, asserting that he, a champion above pettiness, had nothing left to prove. The owner reminded him of his bar tab and requested that he release the Trandoshan, promising to forgive his debt. Krrsantan glanced at her but disobeyed, roaring and tearing off the victim's left arm, shocking the onlookers. Fwip sighed and scowled, expressing her disgust, while the Wookiee dropped some credits into the hands of the Twi'lek female server. As Krrsantan exited the building, he growled and stared at Fett, who had watched the altercation from the doorway. The crime lord acknowledged Fwip's effort, and she shrugged and rolled her eyes before he departed to pursue the Wookiee. After Fwip instructed Max Rebo to resume playing music, the cantina patrons resumed their activities. Fett later recruited Krrsantan into his criminal organization.

Pyke attack

Fwip and her servants watch curious as the Pykes depart.

Due to disruptions in their smuggling operations and in preparation for war against Boba Fett, the Pyke Syndicate dispatched two Pykes to Fwip's cantina. Fwip noticed the pair while conversing with other patrons, and her servers offered to clean their helmets, but were refused. The two Pykes then departed without ordering drinks, leaving a camtono behind without explanation. Fwip watched them leave before the camtono exploded, killing her and the cantina's patrons.

As a result of the Sanctuary bombing, Fett concluded that war had commenced. Meanwhile, at the Pyke Syndicate's headquarters on Tatooine, Mayor Mok Shaiz condemned the attack to the syndicate's boss on the planet, emphasizing that he had only agreed to surgical strikes. The Pyke boss subsequently apologized for overstepping the boundaries of his agreement with the mayor.

Personality and traits

Fwip used charm to great success in her business.

Garsa Fwip, a Twi'lek female, possessed tan skin and brown eyes. Upon meeting Fett and Shand, Fwip promptly advertised the offerings of her cantina to the new arrivals, repeating the same upon their second visit. Fwip opposed violence in her cantina. When Krrsantan caused a disturbance, she condemned the "horror and cruelty" of the fighting pits, stating that her establishment was "more civilized," and expressed disgust at the sight of dismemberment.

Equipment

Fwip regularly wore elegant gowns in her establishment.

While greeting the new crime bosses at the Sanctuary, Fwip donned a shimmering gown with robes, a necklace, and a headdress. During Krrsantan's brawl, she wore a white and tan outfit.

Behind the scenes

Garsa Fwip's debut was in "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land," the inaugural episode of the live-action television series The Book of Boba Fett, where she was portrayed by Jennifer Beals. Beals stated that she and director Robert Rodriguez discussed Fwip being similar to Rick Blaine from Michael Curtiz's 1942 film Casablanca. As a woman, Fwip had to attain power differently than Blaine, earning it rather than acquiring it by default. Fwip's attire was designed by costume designer Shawna Trpcic. Beals provided Trpcic with images related to her meditations, which the designer integrated into the outfit. The lekku prosthetics worn by the actress were designed to be lightweight and balanced for her skull, making them easy to wear and remove when needed.
