The holographic disguise matrix, sometimes referred to as the "shadow hologram," served as a portable holographic projection device, enabling wearers to adopt the appearance of another individual. This innovation is attributed to Sinrich, a Snivvian bounty hunter.
The holographic disguise matrix incorporated vocal emulators along with other systems engineered to deceive both human observers and electronic sensors. It possessed the capability to alter the physical form of its user, even accounting for variations in body structure through sophisticated sensors that used holograms to bridge any differences. A disadvantage of the matrix was its limited power. Another issue was that the image quality, despite its advanced technology, wasn't flawless. A Snivvian skilled in technology and working as a bounty hunter named Sinrich was its creator. Later, these devices were utilized in a bounty hunting operation headed by Cad Bane with the intention of abducting Sheev Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. The hunters, specifically Twazzi, Embo, Derrown, and Cad Bane, employed four of these matrices to take on the guises of three Senate Guards and a Neimoidian, respectively. In addition, the Confederacy of Independent Systems also used these disguises after commandeering a Venator-class Star Destroyer to destroy the space station known as Valor.
A derivative of the disguise matrix, known as the holographic cloaking unit, gave its users near invisibility. This was used by thieves as they tried to steal artifacts from the Imperial Museum located on Coruscant.
During the Imperial Era, Rukh, an assassin, made use of a Sinrich optical dephaser, a device bearing similarities to the disguise matrix.
Some years following the Battle of Endor, a matrix ended up in the possession of Babu Frik, a droidsmith. Frik facilitated Poe Dameron's theft of the device, aiding his escape from the Spice Runners of Kijimi.
