The Imperial Medical Corps represented a specialized branch within the Imperial Military of the reconstituted Sith Empire. Its primary function was the provision of medical attention and healthcare services to the Empire's military personnel. However, mirroring the broader societal biases of the Empire, the Corps exhibited discriminatory practices against individuals who were neither Human nor pureblood Sith. This division saw deployment across both active combat zones and newly subjugated planets. Operationally, the Corps was subordinate to the Sphere of Biotic Science and, consequently, to the member of the ruling Dark Council who presided over that particular Sphere of Influence within the Empire's structure.
Functioning as an integral part of the Imperial Military of the reconstituted Sith Empire, the Imperial Medical Corps specialized in the delivery of medical and biological services. Due to the nature of their work, the Medical Corps was answerable to the Sphere of Biotic Science—one of the twelve Spheres of Influence, each administered by a member of the Empire's governing Dark Council. Following the restructuring of the Sith Empire after the collapse of the Eternal Empire, the Sphere of Biotic Science and the Sphere of Technology were merged to form the Sphere of Scientific Advancement. Members of the Corps were responsible for the medical well-being of the Empire's soldiers, with medical droids stationed on various planets throughout the galaxy to ensure comprehensive medical support for all Imperial forces and allied personnel.
Long before the conclusion of the Great Galactic War against the Galactic Republic, the Imperial Medical Corps had already been established. Corps members accompanied the Imperial Military's invasion fleet during the Sith Empire's attack on the Republic's capital planet, Coruscant, which occurred in 3653 BBY. After Sith Lord Darth Malgus and his team successfully assaulted the Jedi Temple and neutralized Coruscant's defensive systems, Malgus instructed his subordinate Adraas to request a medical team from the medical ship known as the Steadfast. This team arrived with several medical droids and gurneys to provide care for the injured members of the Sith strike force. Malgus then bypassed the standard protocols regarding the treatment of aliens, compelling the doctors to administer medical aid to his Twi'lek lover, Eleena Daru.
In the years following the assault on Coruscant and the subsequent signing of the Treaty of Coruscant that brought the Great Galactic War to an end, the Medical Corps continued its service alongside the broader military on planets conquered by the Empire during the conflict. One such planet was Sullust. During the Cold War that followed the Great Galactic War, Archiban Kimble—a Republic xenopathologist and combat surgeon, more commonly known as Doc—infiltrated the Corps on Sullust and briefly impersonated a member of the organization.
Medical personnel were also stationed at the Imperial space station orbiting the toxic world of Quesh, where they mandated that all new arrivals complete Form 1423-D to qualify for inoculation and gain permission to visit the planet's surface. Medical officers also extended assistance to the Empire's allies, with individuals such as Officer Willem offering support to the Imperial-aligned House of Thul on Alderaan during the civil war that engulfed the planet.
Despite rarely engaging directly in combat, personnel within the Imperial Medical Corps, as members of the Imperial Military, underwent comprehensive combat training. Their uniforms consisted of white or gray robes, often accented with blue or red, and they carried cases filled with medical supplies. Silver medical droids frequently accompanied Corpsmen. These droids were also strategically positioned throughout the galaxy on both Imperial-controlled and contested worlds, providing medical assistance and services to all Imperial and Sith personnel, in addition to the Empire's allies. The policies of the Corps reflected the pervasive anti-alien sentiment within the Empire, with Imperial medical facilities and services generally limited to Humans or pure-blooded Sith, unless specific orders dictated otherwise.
The Imperial Medical Corps made its debut appearance in the novel The Old Republic: Deceived, which was released on March 22 2011 as a promotional tie-in to Star Wars: The Old Republic, a video game developed by BioWare that launched on December 13 of the same year.
