Plot summary

The present

On the planet Kaller, stormtroopers have successfully captured members of the Spectres crew, namely Ezra Bridger, Garazeb Orrelios, Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Chopper. Using a comlink, the stormtrooper in charge inquires with their superior officer about whether to keep the prisoners in custody or proceed with immediate execution. Meanwhile, Kanan Jarrus is still unconscious, reliving flashbacks of his time on Mygeeto as Caleb Dume.

War on Mygeeto

As Caleb Dume grieves over the fallen Clone trooper Stance, the Kage Warrior cynically comments that eliminating a clone barely counts as a kill. Caleb begins to sense the dark side, which manifests as a dark fog of anger and fear infiltrating his thoughts. Caleb impulsively attacks the Kage Warrior with his lightsaber, but his adversary wields a deadly flamethrower.

Simultaneously, Master Depa Billaba is engaged in a duel with General Grievous, who mocks the Jedi Master, expressing his desire to permanently end her. Billaba retaliates by kicking the Kaleesh cyborg down a shaft, but he quickly recovers and resumes his assault. Master Billaba skillfully manages to sever two of his mechanical hands. Clone Commander Grey requests reinforcements at Mesa camp six, but Clone Captain Styles insists that they must assist the Jedi General. The two soldiers engage B1-series battle droids, with Grey vowing not to fail Billaba once more.

Succumbing to the dark side's influence, Caleb deflects the Kage Warrior's fiery blast during their duel. However, Caleb resolves not to be consumed by the dark side and instead swiftly dives under the Kage Warrior, severing the cable connecting the flamethrower unit. Caleb then offers the Kage mercy. The Kage Warrior identifies himself as Colonel Coburn Sear from Quarzite. Rejecting the "tyrants'" offer of mercy, he chooses to ignite himself with a torch. Engulfed in flames, Coburn throws himself at Caleb, forcing the Jedi to cut him down in self-defense.

As the flames devour Colonel Sear's remains, Caleb reflects somberly on his enemy's demise, reminding himself that there is no honor in triumph. Caleb grapples with the fact that he has taken his first life, hoping that it will be the last. Soon after, Commander Grey and Captain Styles arrive, inquiring if he has seen Jedi General Billaba.

They come across Master Billaba in the middle of a fight with General Grievous, who is gaining the advantage. The Clone officers use their blasters to successfully drive Grievous away, while Kanan tends to his injured master. As they bury the fallen, Master Billaba assures Caleb and Styles that she has learned to live with regret long ago. Caleb reflects on the loss of his first friend and the first life he took, coming to terms with the brutal realities of war. Shortly after, they are given orders to proceed to Kaller.

Back to the present

As Kanan awakens from his coma, he overhears the lead stormtrooper conferring with his superiors about whether to interrogate or execute the prisoners. Utilizing the Force, Kanan shatters the glass of his bacta tank. He then grabs his lightsaber and swiftly defeats the stormtroopers guarding his friends. Zeb complains that Kanan was too slow, while Hera expresses her relief that he is alright. As Kanan assists Chopper in getting up, he jokingly asks what they would do without him.
