Kanan Jarrus' lightsaber

Kanan Jarrus' personal weapon, a lightsaber that projected a blue beam, was uniquely constructed in two parts. This weapon belonged to Kanan Jarrus, formerly a Padawan who managed to survive the Jedi Order's violent destruction. He later became a key figure in the Rebellion fighting against the oppressive Galactic Empire.

Kanan ignites his lightsaber

The lightsaber that Kanan Jarrus crafted, back when he was known as Caleb Dume, possessed a feature allowing for the adjustment of its blade length. Following its completion, Depa Billaba, his Jedi Master, along with the droid Professor Huyang, expressed curiosity about the saber's qualities, ultimately deferring to the guidance provided by the Force.

During the Galactic Empire's rule, Jarrus concealed his lightsaber to avoid detection. Instead of attaching it to his belt using the ring, which would have immediately identified him as a Jedi, Jarrus cleverly disguised it as two separate components. The main body and grip were positioned at the base of his spine, while the emitter shroud was placed on his left side. To assemble the weapon, Jarrus simply had to insert the emitter section into the main body and twist to secure it. Furthermore, the lightsaber included a low-power setting designed to prevent injuries during sparring sessions. In this mode, the blade exhibited a distinct blue hue, accompanied by a slightly elevated vibration frequency.

Background

Caleb Dume faced General Grievous during the Clone Wars.

As a young Padawan under the tutelage of Jedi Master Depa Billaba, Jarrus, then known as Caleb Dume, constructed his unique lightsaber with the assistance of Huyang. After the devastating destruction of the Jedi Order, Dume managed to evade the widespread death that claimed the lives of many Jedi, choosing to go into hiding. Initially, he concealed it within a compartment on the Kasmiri, the ship belonging to Janus Kasmir. Dume then adopted the alias Kanan Jarrus. He kept his lightsaber a secret to avoid being recognized and killed as a Jedi. He discreetly carried it with him at all times, including during his time on the planet Gorse and its moon, Cynda, throughout the Gorse Conflict.

Fourteen years following the Jedi Order's downfall, Ezra Bridger, an orphaned thief hailing from Lothal who had been taken in by Jarrus and the Ghost's crew, discovered the hidden lightsaber aboard the Ghost. During the crew's mission to liberate Wookiee slaves from the spice mines of Kessel, Jarrus, facing a squad of stormtroopers, brandished his lightsaber, revealing his Jedi identity to Agent Kallus of the Imperial Security Bureau. This revelation surprised Kallus, who ordered his troops to focus their fire on Jarrus. Jarrus deflected the blaster fire, enabling the crew and the Wookiees to escape Kessel. This act attracted the attention of the Grand Inquisitor, a notorious Jedi hunter.

Later, Jarrus employed his lightsaber in a duel against the Inquisitor at the Spire on Stygeon Prime, utilizing Form III in combat.

During their second confrontation at Fort Anaxes, Jarrus was knocked unconscious. Despite Bridger's attempt to wield the lightsaber, the Inquisitor easily disarmed him and used it, alongside his own, to defend against a large Fyrnock summoned by the Padawan. Jarrus retrieved his lightsaber during their escape. Following his capture, Jarrus's lightsaber was seized by the Inquisitor.

Even after being blinded, Kanan remained skilled with his lightsaber.

In what became their final clash, the Inquisitor displayed Jarrus's lightsaber clipped to his belt as a symbol of victory, forcing the Jedi to resort to using his apprentice's weapon. During their battle, Bridger used the Force to pull Jarrus's lightsaber into his hand and engaged the Inquisitor. After Bridger was knocked aside and presumed dead, Jarrus reclaimed his lightsaber, defeated the Inquisitor, and escaped with Bridger aboard the Jedi hunter's TIE Advanced v1.

Jarrus continued to wield his lightsaber as part of the early rebellion, fighting many foes including Darth Vader, the Seventh Sister, the Fifth Brother, the Eighth Brother, former Sith Lord Maul and even his own apprentice when he was temporarily possessed by a Nightsister spirit until shortly before his death when it was knocked from his grasp by Rukh. Governor Arihnda Pryce recovered the lightsaber soon after, presenting it to Grand Admiral Thrawn as proof that the Jedi had died.

Ezra Bridger constructed his third lightsaber to pay homage to his deceased friend and master.
