Kanan 3 represents the third installment in the canon comic book collection known as Star Wars: Kanan. Greg Weisman penned the story for this issue, while Pepe Larraz provided the illustrations. Marvel Comics released it on June 10, 2015.
After flying directly into a prepared ambush located within the Coruscant system, Caleb Dume is compelled to confront the Imperial Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighters in aerial combat. Although the Kasmiri sustains significant damage, Caleb manages to destroy multiple Imperial fighters before making his escape into hyperspace.
While in hyperspace, the disoriented Caleb makes the decision to set a course leading back to Kaller, ultimately arriving at Janus Kasmir's hangar bay. Caleb resolves to confront Kasmir, the individual who aided him initially but from whom he subsequently stole a ship. Kasmir is enraged and seizes Caleb by the throat. Caleb attempts to reassure him by stating that he returned the ship and implores the Kalleran to refrain from addressing him as "kid." Kasmir retorts that Caleb's return was solely due to a lack of alternative destinations.
Kasmir expresses a desire for Caleb to disappear from his life; however, he eventually softens and extends an offer to mentor him. Caleb's contempt for Kasmir's criminal activities causes Kasmir to become impatient. He aims a blaster pistol at the boy, commanding him to leave. Caleb flees, but then realizes that Kasmir was correct about his lack of other options.
Following several cycles spent struggling to survive on the streets of Plateau City, Caleb encounters Kasmir once more. A local crime lord by the name of Tápusk, accompanied by his Rodian and human thugs armed with blasters, confront Kasmir. Caleb intervenes to rescue Kasmir, using his lightsaber to incapacitate one of the humans, which provides Kasmir with the opportunity to subdue the remaining human and Rodian henchmen. With the situation reversed, Tápusk is compelled to withdraw.
Kasmir brings Caleb back to the Kasmir and demands to know the reason for Caleb's intervention. Dismissing the encounter with Tápusk, Kasmir asserts that he was in negotiations with the crime boss and suggests that he could have increased his earnings. Having lost his prospective crew, Kasmir recruits Caleb as his new crew member.
Following Kasmir's advice, Caleb severs his Jedi braid and conceals his lightsaber and holocron within a chest. After Caleb puts on new attire and a blaster, Kasmir instructs him to abandon his original name due to his fugitive status. As Caleb has not yet chosen a pseudonym, Kasmir continues to refer to him as kid.
Later, Caleb and Kasmir infiltrate a warehouse located in a different settlement with the intention to steal a shipment of IG-RM bodyguard and enforcer droids for sale on the black market. Caleb grapples with the moral implications of his new life as a thief. Before they can successfully remove all of the droids, they are apprehended by a group of armed Kallerans led by Gamut Key. In an effort to save himself, Kasmir proposes a deal with the corrupt Key, disclosing his accomplice's identity as the fugitive Padawan Caleb.
Star Wars: Timelines places the events depicted in Kanan 3 within the year 18 BBY. However, the events portrayed in the issue partially coincide with those of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which would instead place it in 19 BBY.
