Nemet

Commander Nemet was a human officer serving the Galactic Empire's naval forces. During 3 ABY, he served as a tracking officer on the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Avenger, which was a component of the Death Squadron, the personal fleet of the Sith Lord Darth Vader. This fleet was engaged in the search for the secret base belonging to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, a search that led to the Battle of Hoth. Following this battle, the Avenger participated in chasing the Millennium Falcon, a rebel vessel that had managed to escape the planet Hoth.

While in pursuit, the Falcon initially concealed itself within the Hoth asteroid field before evading Imperial sensors by making a landing on the Avenger's command tower. After Lorth Needa, the captain of the Star Destroyer, gave the order to track the Falcon, Nemet reported that the vessel had disappeared. Subsequently, Needa was executed for the loss of the Falcon, which ultimately escaped from Imperial forces.

Biography

Commander Nemet served on the bridge of the Avenger.

Nemet, a human, was a member of the officer corps within the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire. In the year 3 ABY, he held the rank of commander and served as the tracking officer aboard the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Avenger, reporting to its commanding officer, Captain Lorth Needa. The Avenger was part of Death Squadron, a fleet of Star Destroyers under the leadership of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, tasked with locating the secret headquarters of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. When the base was discovered on the planet Hoth, the Avenger was among the vessels that participated in the Imperial attack on the base.

The YT-1300 light freighter known as the Millennium Falcon was among the rebel ships that escaped Hoth, prompting Vader to order the Avenger and other ships to give chase, because it was known to carry close allies of his son, Luke Skywalker. The freighter was able to evade the pursuing ships for a time by hiding in the Hoth asteroid field, but upon leaving the field, it encountered the Avenger, which had been patrolling the area. Unable to jump to hyperspace because of a problem with the Falcon's hyperdrive, the freighter's captain, Han Solo, piloted his ship directly towards the Avenger as Nemet moved to one of the crew pit consoles on the bridge of the Avenger. As the Falcon flew close past the viewport of the bridge, Nemet was leaning over the shoulder of the bridge crew member at the console, causing the commander to quickly glance up out of the pit.

Nemet informed Captain Needa that the Avenger had lost the Millennium Falcon.

Solo proceeded to land the Falcon on the command tower of the Avenger, causing the freighter to disappear from the Star Destroyer's scanners. Needa immediately instructed that the freighter be tracked, but after checking his screen, Nemet reported that the vehicle was lost. When Needa questioned if a vessel like the Falcon was large enough to have a cloaking device, he confirmed it after checking his screen again. M'Kae, the communications officer, then informed Needa that Vader wanted an update on the Falcon's pursuit, and the captain left to apologize to Vader, who executed him for his failure. Ultimately, the Falcon managed to escape without alerting the Imperials, but was pursued by the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Personality and traits

Nemet had light skin, brown eyes, and brown hair.

Equipment

Nemet was dressed in a typical olive-gray Imperial Navy officer's uniform, complete with a belt and a cap bearing an officer's disk. The commander wore a single code cylinder and a rank insignia plaque displaying two red squares above two blue on the right breast of his uniform.

Behind the scenes

The Empire Strikes Back

Footage of Nemet was reused for the bridge of the Executor.

Mark Jones played Nemet in the 1980 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, but he was credited only as one of several "Other officers." James Gleason dubbed over Nemet's lines at Samuel Goldwyn Studios on November 2, 1979; the dialogue replacement cue sheet referred to Nemet as the "Floor Commander." The character is only referred to as "Tracking Officer" in the film's script.

Footage from the Avenger was reused, and Jones reappears towards the end of the film on the bridge of Vader's flagship, the Executor; however, this article assumes that this is a separate character. Sometime between April 24 and May 2, 1979, the scenes on the bridge of the Avenger were filmed on Stage 5 at Elstree Studios.

Tie-in material

In Adam Gidwitz's 2015 novel adaptation of the film, The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want to Be a Jedi?, Nemet's dialogue has been altered to sound more panicked than it did in the film. The 2016 graphic novel adaptation of the film by Alessandro Ferrari also changes Nemet's dialogue, combining his two lines by removing Needa's dialogue between them. A character with a rank plaque identical to Nemet's, Suba, has been identified in canon media as a lieutenant.

Nemet was first identified in the new Star Wars canon in the title for a 2018 Star Wars Authentics image produced by The Topps Company, Inc., which incorrectly states that he appeared in Episode IV A New Hope. The name "Nemet" originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first used on a card in the 1997 Dagobah Limited set of the Star Wars Customizable Card Game. Nemet also appeared in Legends before the release of The Empire Strikes Back in the film's novelization by Donald F. Glut and The Empire Strikes Back Storybook by Shep Steneman, which were both released earlier in 1980.
