R'ora

The R'ora were a sentient species indigenous to the world of Luprora. Their relationship with the Lupr'or, a humanoid group of colonizers on Luprora, was one of conflict. Following the events of the Battle of Starkiller Base, First Order officer Sol Rivas was captured by the R'ora. Subsequently, Captain Phasma orchestrated a Lupr'or offensive against the R'ora fortress with the purpose of assassinating Rivas to hide her involvement in the destruction of Starkiller Base.

Biology and appearance

The R'ora were a two-legged aquatic race characterized by their red skin, pointed teeth, rough features, and the presence of two pairs of tentacles located on their sides. While the R'ora were well suited for the oceans of the planet Luprora, they possessed the ability to breathe and move on land as well.

Society and culture

The R'ora were a relatively unsophisticated species. By 34 ABY, they had developed tools like spears and ropes, and resided in settlements such as the R'ora stronghold. It appeared they maintained a symbiotic bond with the enormous tentacled Tsw'ells, which acted as guardians for their island fortress. The R'ora had a combative relationship with the Lupr'or humanoids, who had established a colony on Luprora centuries before the First Order-Resistance War began.

History

The R'ora originated as an aquatic race residing in the oceans of the planet Luprora. By the year 34 ABY, rising sea levels had resulted in the flooding of a significant portion of the planet's land. As the R'ora spread into the submerged regions, they found themselves in opposition to the Lupr'or humanoids, who had colonized Luprora many centuries prior. In contrast to the struggles faced by the Lupr'or, the R'ora successfully adapted to the shifting climate and environment of the planet.

At the time of the Battle of Starkiller Base, the Lupr'or population had dwindled to a small village situated near a lake containing a rocky island that was home to a R'ora stronghold. Shortly after arriving on Luprora, the escaped Lieutenant Sol Rivas was taken captive by the R'ora. When Captain Phasma and TN-3465 journeyed to the planet to pursue Rivas, they learned from Jair'i, the Lupr'or chief, that Rivas was in the hands of the R'ora and would soon be dead. Phasma rejected this assumption, and so Phasma and TN-3465 were told they would be taken by Dar'en to where the R'ora would keep Rivas in order for them to see how futile it was.

Remaining determined, Captain Phasma devised a strategy that involved attacking the R'ora stronghold by deploying generators to eliminate the Tsw'ells guarding the lake surrounding the island. Subsequently, Phasma led the Lupr'or across the lake in boats to assault the R'ora fortress. Scaling the cliff face, Phasma, TN-3465, and their Lupr'or allies engaged the R'ora, who mounted a fierce defense. Amidst the conflict between the two alien races, Phasma killed Rivas to protect the secrecy of her involvement in disabling Starkiller Base's shields. When TN-3465 voiced concerns for the Lupr'or, Phasma asserted that the Lupr'or were being displaced by the R'ora, who demonstrated a greater capacity to adapt to the planet's changing conditions.

Behind the scenes

The initial appearance of the R'ora occurred in Star Wars: Captain Phasma, a four-part 2017 comic series released by Marvel Comics as part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi promotional campaign. The species was conceived by Kelly Thompson, with illustrations by Marco Checchetto, and colors by Andres Mossa.
