R-3X

R-3X, also known as Rex, previously designated RX-24, was an RX-series droid designed for piloting who initially worked as a pilot. Later, he underwent reprogramming to become a DJ located on the planet Batuu.

Biography

Pilot

Operating a Star Commuter 2000, RX-24 provided transport services from Lothal to Garel, commencing five years prior to the Battle of Yavin. On one particular occasion, the Spectres, a Rebel cell based on Lothal, utilized the shuttle for their operation focused on acquiring weaponry from the Galactic Empire. Their strategy involved isolating Minister Maketh Tua from her accompanying Protocol droid, C-3PO, to prevent him from interpreting her dialogue with the Aqualish arms dealer, Amda Wabo. To achieve this, two members of the rebel group, the young human Ezra Bridger and the astromech droid C1-10P, fabricated a dispute. Bridger insisted that RX-24 enforce a regulation confining all droids to the rear of the transport. Despite Tua's objections, RX-24 maintained that he was adhering to Imperial regulations.

Subsequently, the droid transitioned to working for the Star Tours travel agency, where he piloted a Starspeeder 3000. During his tenure with Star Tours, Rex inadvertently steered his StarSpeeder into an active conflict between the Imperial Navy and the Rebel Alliance. Although no injuries occurred, this incident led to his termination from the company. Following this, Rex took on the role of a cargo pilot for the Alliance, asserting his presence during the Battle of Jakku.

Life on Batuu

Following the events of the Battle of Jakku, Rex experienced a crash landing on Batuu. There, he was discovered and subsequently reprogrammed into a DJ by Mubo, a Utai at the Droid Depot. Along with his updated programming, RX-24 was renamed R-3X, and his physical appearance was modified. Afterward, Mubo transferred ownership of the droid to Oga Garra as a form of debt settlement, and "DJ Rex" commenced his role of providing musical entertainment within Oga's Cantina. Rex would play a diverse range of music as a DJ, from Oola Shuka, by the renowned galactic artist Gaya, to Bright Suns, by Mus Kat & Nalpak. Rex himself was highlighted as a performer in tracks like Blue Milk Surprise by the Loth-cats, and Mad About Mad About Me by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. Rex would often malfunction during performances, necessitating reboots from Oga's bartending staff.

Personality and traits

While serving as a pilot for Garel Interstellar Excursions, Rex exhibited professionalism coupled with a relaxed demeanor. Although he wasn't overly strict about the regulation dictating that droids remain behind the passenger area, he possessed the authority to enforce it and would do so if a complaint arose, calmly referencing Imperial regulations. Upon settling on Batuu, he displayed a significantly more expressive and outgoing personality, aligning with his new role as a cantina DJ.

Behind the scenes

RX-24 originated as a character (known as Captain "Rex") from Star Tours, a simulator attraction featured in several Disney Parks around the globe (initially launched at Disneyland in 1987). He was voiced by Paul Reubens, who reprised the role in the Star Wars Rebels episode "Droids in Distress." Reubens once again lent his voice to the droid for his appearance in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios, where RX-24 functions as a DJ at Oga's Cantina under the alias R-3X.
