Second Battle of Bilbringi

The Second Battle of Bilbringi, also referred to during its planning phase as Operation Trinity, represented a significant military engagement towards the conclusion of the Yuuzhan Vong War. The battle pitted the forces of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances against those of the Imperial Remnant, which was an allied state.

Prelude

Back in 27 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong invaders successfully captured the Bilbringi system.

The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, in an effort to isolate Coruscant from the key systems located within the Inner and Mid Rims, initiated three substantial assaults within approximately one month: one targeting Duro, another directed at Fondor, and the final one focused on Bilbringi. This strategic offensive was masterminded by Supreme Commander Sien Sovv, with the assistance of three additional commanders: Admiral Traest Kre'fey, General Wedge Antilles, and General Garm Bel Iblis.

The battle

The task force, known as Operation Trinity, was organized into three distinct groups: Alpha Fleet, spearheading the assault under Antilles' command; Beta Fleet, providing support under the leadership of Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon; and Gamma Fleet, commanded by Kre'fey. The primary objective of the operation was for Antilles to enter the system first and identify any vulnerabilities within the enemy fleet. Following this reconnaissance, he was to transmit the most advantageous entry points to the other two fleets.

However, just prior to Antilles' fleet's entry, the Yuuzhan Vong deployed their latest creation, the mabugat kan, resulting in the shutdown of several HoloNet relay stations. Given that the entire operation hinged on HoloNet transmissions for coordinated attacks, Antilles found himself unable to summon assistance from the other fleets. Consequently, his fleet was cornered in a system teeming with hostile forces, and the formation suffered significant losses.

Numerous ships under his command were destroyed during the engagement, most notably the Interdictor Cruiser Memory of Ithor, led by General Pash Cracken. Despite these setbacks, Antilles managed to inflict substantial damage on the Yuuzhan Vong forces, successfully destroying the Interdictors and other enemy vessels.

Antilles' fleet barely avoided complete annihilation at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong. The fleet's survival was due to Antilles' order to reduce the Mon Mothma's shields. The Yuuzhan Vong, under the mistaken impression that the Star Destroyer's main reactor was about to explode, retreated. The timely arrival of a cloaked Golan II Space Defense SpaceGun, commandeered by Han Solo, allowed the Mon Mothma and the remaining vessels of Alpha Fleet to withdraw to Mon Calamari.

Antilles subsequently rendezvoused with Pellaeon's fleet after the conclusion of the battle.

Many Alliance soldiers who were captured ended up being transported by the Yuuzhan Vong to Selvaris.

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Bilbringi is initially depicted in The New Jedi Order: The Final Prophecy by Greg Keyes, where it serves as one of the two principal storylines.

Fleet Group Alpha, which was under Wedge Antilles' command, is portrayed as being less than a third the size of the Yuuzhan Vong force present in the system. However, the numbers do not support this, as Antilles commanded at least seven capital ships, while the Yuuzhan Vong command had fourteen, making the sizing ratio inaccurate.
