Shantipole

Shantipole, a planet situated far out in the Mid Rim of the galaxy, was infamous for its intensely volatile atmosphere, often considered a point of no return for any pilots who dared to venture there. It served as the home of Quarrie, a Mon Calamari who developed a prototype for the B-wing starfighter. During the events of the blockade of Ibaar, Hera Syndulla, along with Sabine Wren and Garazeb Orrelios, journeyed to Shantipole. Their mission was to acquire the B-wing prototype with the goal to break the blockade of Ibaar.

Description

This remote world, characterized by a turbulent atmosphere composed of gas and lightning, and appearing largely deserted, was found in the Mid Rim sector of the galaxy. It was orbited by at least a single moon. The surface of the planet was primarily defined by towering mountain peaks adorned with vividly colored trees. The skies of Shantipole were also inhabited by large, winged creatures referred to as dactillions.

History

Hera Syndulla tested the Prototype B6 in the volatile atmosphere of Shantipole.

Shantipole was once considered a promising source of rare gases, much like tibanna; however, prospective investors abandoned the planet due to its erratic and unpredictable wind patterns. This volatile atmosphere led most pilots to steer clear of Shantipole, with some considering it a "one-way trip." This very characteristic, however, made it the ideal sanctuary for Quarrie, a Mon Calamari who was an accomplished engineer and starfighter designer. It allowed him to work on his designs away from the scrutiny of the Galactic Empire. He established a secret starfighter laboratory and, after many years of labor, designed and constructed the Prototype B6. This advanced starfighter was equipped with experimental weaponry, and he was assisted by his astromech droid, BG-81.

Behind the scenes

Shantipole made its first appearance within the canonical universe in the Star Wars Rebels Season Two episode titled "Wings of the Master," which initially aired on Disney XD on November 11, 2015. The Research Station Shantipole previously featured in the 1988 West End Games adventure book Strike Force: Shantipole, which is part of the Star Wars Legends continuity, and was described as being situated on an asteroid.

Subsequently, Shantipole appeared in the non-canon 2017 LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season Two episodes called "Free Fall" and "Return of the Return of the Jedi." In those episodes, the Freemakers and Quarrie set a trap on Shantipole for the Imperial hunter droid M-OC, leading to the destruction of both the Arrowhead and the StarScavenger. After M-OC survived and fled to reinforce the second Death Star, the Freemakers rebuilt the StarScavenger and joined in the Battle of Endor, ultimately defeating M-OC.
