Spodan

During the era of the Galactic Civil War, there existed a male Sedrian individual known as Spodan, who hailed from the planet Sedri. In the midst of the Sedri civil war, Spodan aligned himself with the bishop of war, Karak, and his band of renegades, serving as Karak's personal protector. Spodan accompanied Karak and five other renegades during an assault on the Sun caves, situated within the city of Fitsay, during the Siege of the Fitsay Sun Caves. Their mission was to seize the power of the Golden Sun. A group of Rebels and the Sedrian priest Pek pursued Karak and his followers into the caves. Spodan, along with the rest of the group except Karak, lay in wait to ambush them. Upon spotting the Rebels, Spodan launched a surprise attack on one of them, utilizing a poisonous spiny urchin before attempting to escape. Ultimately, Spodan died in battle against the heroes within the confines of the caves.

Biography

Originating from the planet Sedri, a water-dominated world located in the Sedri system and relatively isolated within the vast galaxy, was a male Sedrian named Spodan. During his lifetime, a civil war erupted on Sedri. This conflict pitted the religious order of the Priests of the Sun, who governed Sedri from the city of Fitsay, against a faction of renegades led by the former bishop of war, Karak, who opposed the priests' authority. Spodan chose to support the renegades in this war, as they contested the Priests of the Sun's control over the Golden Sun. The Golden Sun was a massive collective of polyp species known as Golden Sun coral. This coral formed a unified, sentient entity with a strong connection to the Force, possessing significant healing capabilities. However, the priests kept the Golden Sun hidden within the Great Shell Dome at the heart of Fitsay, strictly regulating access to it. Karak led the renegades with the belief that all Sedrians should have access to the Golden Sun, although his true motivation was to seize the coral's power for his own purposes.

Amidst this conflict, an Imperial scout ship inadvertently discovered Sedri. After reporting its location, a small Imperial garrison was established on the planet, commanded by commander Aban. The Imperial presence, in turn, attracted the attention of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, leading a Rebel dignitary named Mors Odrion and his companion Rekara to travel to Sedri. However, the Rebels soon encountered the renegades, who captured them for interrogation due to their unfamiliarity with off-worlders. While the renegades considered using Odrion as a bargaining chip with the newly arrived Imperials, Rekara managed to escape and steal a small piece of Golden coral that the renegades had taken from Fitsay.

Subsequently, Karak brought Odrion to the Imperial garrison and forged an alliance with Aban. Their plan was to jointly attack Fitsay, seize the power of the Golden Sun, and divide it equally between the renegades and the Empire. The former priest of war concealed this agreement from most of the renegades, many of whom harbored suspicions about the Imperials. A group of six Rebels, who had journeyed to Sedri with Rekara after she reached the rebel Delta Base on New Kisge seeking assistance, exploited this situation. They used Karak's betrayal to convince many renegades to side with them and the Priests of the Sun in the upcoming battle. This included Karak's own daughter, Fala.

Those renegades, including Spodan, who remained loyal to Karak, and the Empire then launched their siege on the Sun Caves, utilizing an Aquatic Terrain Armored Transport. The Imperial forces, primarily composed of Aquatic assault stormtroopers, clashed with the forces of Fitsay and the Rebels outside the city. Meanwhile, Karak led six of his most trusted and formidable renegades—Dragob, Glish, K'hondo, Porm, Spodan, and Burborok—along with his pet razort, Tooch, and their prisoner Odrion, to the Sun Caves in an attempt to claim the coral for himself and defeat both the Imperials and the priests.

Upon reaching the cave, the group was confronted by the High Priest Cardo, who was slashed across the chest, suffering a near-fatal wound. They proceeded into the cave, with Karak and Odrion heading directly for the main chamber while the others dispersed to slow down any pursuers. Spodan positioned himself within a large chamber, armed with a poisonous spiny urchin and concealed behind a pile of rubble. The group of six Rebels, Rekara, and Cardo's son, Pek, soon entered the cave in search of Karak and stumbled upon the chamber. Spodan waited until the entire group had passed before ambushing the Rebel at the rear, stinging him with the poisonous urchin, and then fleeing to a crossroads within the cave. Spodan was eventually killed in combat against the Rebels elsewhere in the cave. The Rebels ultimately thwarted Karak's plans by persuading the Golden Sun to separate and weaken its power, which Karak had seized control of, rendering him nearly invincible.

Behind the scenes

Spodan's initial appearance occurred in the West End Games adventure booklet titled Battle for the Golden Sun, authored by Douglas Kaufman and released in 1988 as part of the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. He serves as an enemy that the player characters encounter during the final chapter of the adventure, whom they are compelled to eliminate in order to reach Karak and successfully conclude the adventure.
