Plot summary

Exposition

Following the One Sith's demise in 138 ABY, a fresh Galactic Federation Triumvirate was established, comprising the Jedi Council, the Fel Empire, and the Galactic Alliance. To accelerate galactic communication, the new Galactic Empress Marasiah Fel authorized a galaxy-spanning communications array system's construction. Imperial Knight Yalta Val was tasked with leading an Imperial mission to the Carreras system to oversee the communications array's construction there. During transit, Val's starship experienced a crash landing on an uncharted floating world in the Surd Nebula known as Mala. There, Val's crew met their end at the hands of a Sith master and his apprentice. Val himself was captured by Darth Wredd, who first eliminated his own master before assuming Val's identity. However, an Imperial communications droid survived the crash, managing to secure Val's lightsaber. This droid then collided with an unknown object and was left adrift within the Carreras system.

Rising Action

A week later, two junk dealers, the Human Ania Solo and the Mon Calamari Sauk, a refugee from the poisoned world of Dac, discovered the damaged Imperial communications droid and its unique cargo. These two scavengers, seeking to escape their impoverished lives, operate a junkyard on Carreras Minor's moon. They unsuccessfully attempted to sell the lightsaber, encountering difficulties with the local Shifala authorities. When a Shifala officer demanded they surrender the "laser sword" and insulted them as "immigrant scum", Ania Solo killed him. Simultaneously, the "false" Yalta Val was apprehended by the Shifala authorities. Claiming a Sith presence within the Carreras system, Val coerced Governor Biala into granting him complete control over all Carreras security forces. Wredd also sought the recovery of his "stolen" lightsaber. On Mala, the true Yalta Val was imprisoned behind Wredd's mask.

In the Ottega system, Jao Assam, Val's Imperial Knight colleague overseeing the construction of the Ithorian communications link, decided to investigate Val's whereabouts after a period of silence. Back on Carreras Major, Ania and Sauk successfully evaded pursuit by Carreras security forces and returned to their junkyard, where they were joined by their friend AG-37, a compassionate assassin droid. Before Ania could dispose of the lightsaber, the "false" Yalta Val and his Carreras security forces arrived at the junkyard. Prior to this, Darth Wredd had contacted his prisoner, Yalta Val, offering him the choice to embrace the dark side of the Force. Upon learning of the encounter between his security forces and Ania's companions, Wredd resolved to confront them.

The "false" Yalta Val demanded Ania return his lightsaber, offering amnesty for the death of the security officers. However, Ania refused to yield the lightsaber, asserting her right to it by salvage. Enraged by her defiance, Darth Wredd attacked them with his Force powers, instructing his security forces to eliminate them. With AG-37's assistance, Ania and Sauk escaped on his freighter. Darth Wredd then exploited the incident to mobilize Governor Biala's security forces, further escalating tensions between the two. After repairing the damaged Imperial communications droid, Ania and her companions discovered a holographic recording of an Imperial Knight battling a Sith. They quickly deduced that the real Yalta Val had been replaced by an impostor.

Forging an Alliance

Meanwhile, Jao Assam expressed his concerns regarding Yalta Val's disappearance to his superiors, Empress Fel and the Imperial Knight Antares Draco. However, they dismissed his worries, instructing him to continue his work on the Ithorian link in the array. Undeterred by his superiors' lack of support, Jao decided to travel to the Carreras system to locate Val himself. Upon exiting hyperspace, Assam encountered a Shifala naval blockade and narrowly avoided arrest. Darth Wredd, still posing as Yalta Val, learned of his presence and ordered his capture. Simultaneously, Ania and her companions evaded several pursuing Carreras starfighters by flying into the rings surrounding Carreras Minor. They landed on that planet, where their freighter was attacked by a massive tentacled creature. Jao Assam intervened, helping them escape the creature's grasp.

After an initial period of tension, Jao Assam earned the trust of Ania, AG-37, and Sauk after he recognized that Yalta Val had been replaced by an impostor. The four agreed to rescue Yalta Val and foil the impostor's plan. Meanwhile, at the Carreras communication array, Darth Wredd further alienated his host by nearly strangling a Shifala worker due to a delay in activating the communication systems. Tracing the coordinates stored within the Imperial communications droid, Jao, Ania, and her companions journeyed into the Surd Nebula. Upon reaching the Imperial communication droid's coordinates, they found no sign of Mala. Shortly thereafter, their ship was intercepted by a Carreras warship, and they were captured by the Carreras security forces and taken to the Carreras communications array. Having captured the Imperial Knight and his companions, the false Yalta Val ordered the former to be brought before him and the latter to be executed. When Governor Biala objected to his orders, he nearly Force-choked her but ultimately spared her life.

With Jao Assam in custody, Darth Wredd revealed his true identity to the captive Imperial Knight, outlining his plan to reinstate the Rule of Two. Unbeknownst to Wredd, Biala was observing and realized that Yalta Val had been replaced by an impostor. Meanwhile, Ania and Sauk, imprisoned in cells, theorized that Mala was a floating world, given the inaccuracy of the Imperial communication droid's coordinates. Their suspicions were confirmed as the Carreras communications array entered Mala's orbit. Governor Biala freed Jao, along with Ania and her associates, tasking them with eliminating the false Yalta Val. Jao, Ania, and her companions confronted the Sith in the space station's hangar bay, shooting down his shuttle. However, the Sith retaliated, slicing AG-37 in half. While Jao managed to wound Wredd, the latter used the Force to impale him with metal poles before escaping in a second shuttle.

A Fiery Climax

With Jao Assam presumed dead and her companions Sauk and AG-37 incapacitated, Ania resolved to stop Darth Wredd. Meanwhile, Biala ordered her men to shut down the Carreras communications array, only to discover that Darth Wredd was controlling the station remotely. On Mala, Darth Wredd and his henchman Dieben removed the real Yalta Val's mask, initiating a holographic broadcast using the Carreras communications array. Their broadcast was witnessed by countless sentients across the galaxy, including Governor Biala, Empress Fel, and Antares Draco. In his broadcast, Darth Wredd ridiculed the "impotence" of the Galactic Federation Triumvirate and attempted to execute the captive Val before a galaxy-wide audience. Before he could proceed, Wredd was interrupted by Ania, who attacked the Sith. This distraction allowed the real Yalta Val to break free and retrieve his lightsaber.

As Wredd and Yalta Val engaged in a lightsaber duel, Biala ordered an evacuation of the Carreras communications array, as the station was on a collision course with Mala. Meanwhile, Ania returned to the communications array and evacuated her companions Sauk and AG-37 in AG-37's ship. Back on Mala, Yalta Val gained the upper hand over his Sith opponent, but Wredd managed to escape in a get-away vessel. Before the communication array collided with Mala, Ania successfully rescued Yalta Val. Against all odds, a severely wounded Jao Assam was rescued in zero-gravity space by the Imperial communications droid. After rescuing Jao, AG-37's ship jumped into hyperspace. Once safely aboard, Jao's wounds were treated by a specialized medical droid. During a conversation with Val, AG-37 surmised that the Imperial communications droid had rescued Jao out of gratitude for the younger Imperial Knight's journey to the Carreras system to "rescue" it. While Ania blamed herself for Jao's injuries, Sauk comforted her, assuring her that she had saved them all.

On Coruscant, Empress Fel received a report from Governor Biala detailing the recent destruction of the Carreras communications array. While the Governor was unclear about the specifics of the event, she informed her superiors that a girl named Ania Solo was involved in its destruction.
