Star Wars: Legacy: Outcasts of the Broken Ring represents the second narrative sequence within the Star Wars: Legacy Volume 2 comic book series.
On the world of Cadomai Prime, Darth Wredd, an independent Sith, carries out the assassination of a covert Snivvian operative working as an infiltrator for the One Sith. This act is a component of Wredd's personal rebellion against the One Sith organization. The news regarding this assassination makes its way to Marasiah Fel, the Galactic Empress, on Coruscant. She opts not to retaliate against Wredd, inferring that he is indirectly "aiding" the Galactic Federation Triumvirate by eliminating members of the One Sith. Concurrently, the freighter belonging to Ania Solo and her associates is detected in space by the Animus, a Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer. The Empress is impressed by Ania's actions in the Carreras Incident, specifically her role in saving the Imperial Knight Yalta Val. Ania and her group are given preferential treatment as guests by the Imperials. After their freighter undergoes repairs, Ania's companions, AG-37 and the Mon Calamari named Sauk, embark on a journey through hyperspace.
In a parallel development, Master Yalta Val and his fellow Knight Jao Assam are instructed to return to Coruscant, the galactic capital, to fulfill their duties. While recovering in a bacta tank, Assam experiences a Force vision depicting Darth Wredd murdering Empress Fel. Deeply troubled by this vision, Assam shares his concerns with Master Val, who remains unconvinced about the danger posed by Darth Wredd. Val reminds the younger Knight that pursuing Darth Wredd is outside their responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of upholding their oaths. Unable to sway Master Val, Jao Assam enlists the help of his new acquaintance, Ania, to aid him in tracking down the rogue Sith. They attempt to leave the Animus discreetly but are intercepted by Master Val and a unit of Stormtroopers.
Master Val attempts to reason with the younger Imperial Knight, reminding him to follow orders and to "trust that the Force would guide the Empress." After a brief confrontation, Jao and Ania manage to escape the Star Destroyer aboard a stolen shuttle. Their journey leads them to the planet Nalyd, the native world of Dieben, Darth Wredd's Nalydian follower. Believing that Dieben possesses information regarding Wredd's location, the pair decide to find him. While visiting an unidentified planet to transport a wild beast, Sauk and AG-37 learn about a resettlement operation on the poisoned planet of Dac, the homeworld of the Mon Calamari and Quarren species which was devastated by a Sith bioweapon during the final stages of the Second Imperial Civil War. On Coruscant, Empress Fel is informed about Ania and Jao's escape. She orders Ania's arrest and accuses Jao of deserting the Imperial Knights, a crime punishable by death.
On Nalyd, Jao and Ania learn that Dieben is scheduled to be executed for various offenses. They intervene and abduct him before the execution can take place. During the escape, Dieben is killed, failing to provide any useful information. Ania manages to de-escalate the situation with the local authorities by exaggerating Jao's combat skills as an Imperial Knight, persuading them to reach a peaceful resolution. From the Nalydian authorities, the pair discovers that Dieben was en route to Dac. This leads them to believe that the renegade Sith has sought refuge in the lawless Calamari system, which has become a haven for pirates and criminals following the Second Imperial Civil War. Upon their arrival in the Dac system, they soon discover that another rogue Sith Lord, Darth Luft, and his pirate allies have established a slave trade in the Mon Calamari Orbital Shipyards. The pair also encounters two slaves, Aunt Luen, a Mon Calamari, and Tikin, a Quarren, who reveal that Luft and his associates are enticing Mon Calamari and Quarren refugees back to their ruined homeworld under the guise of restoring life to Dac. However, the Mon Calamari and Quarren slaves are forced to construct a pirate fleet.
Jao and Ania's group are captured by Darth Luft, who throws them into an escape pod and ejects it into the toxic oceans of Dac. However, before their capture, Jao manages to use their Imperial communications droid to send a distress signal, alerting the authorities to the pirate operation. Ania's companions, Sauk and AG-37, intercept their transmission while traveling through hyperspace. They travel to Dac and successfully recover their escape pod from the ocean. After rescuing Jao and Ania, Sauk and AG-37 take their freighter to an abandoned shipyard above Dac.
Following their near-death experience, Jao and Ania argue about their next course of action. Jao advocates for confronting Darth Luft directly, while Ania advises caution and suggests waiting for reinforcements. Tikin, unwilling to risk his son Tilin's life, refuses to cooperate with his rescuers and returns to his captors. Unable to reconcile their differences, Ania and her companions leave in AG-37's freighter, while Jao sets out to confront the Sith. In an attempt to save his son Tilin, Tikin reveals the Imperial Knight's presence to Darth Luft. However, the cruel and sadistic Sith Lord murders Tikin. Unfortunately, Tikin's murder sparks a slave rebellion among both the Mon Calamari and Quarren. In the ensuing chaos, Jao Assam engages Darth Luft in a lightsaber duel.
Meanwhile, Master Val and Admiral Gar Stazi of the Galactic Alliance Navy receive Jao's distress signal. Driven by moral conviction and despite Empress Fel's opposition, Val and Stazi assemble a task force of warships, seatroopers and Imperial Knights to liberate the Mon Calamari Shipyards. Back in the Dac system, Ania and AG-37 are being chased by pirate starfighters. However, the Galactic Alliance task force quickly destroys the pirate ships as it emerges from hyperspace. The Galactic Alliance Navy's forces include the freighter Trand Cappa, which is used to flood the orbiting Mon Calamari shipyards, overwhelming the pirates and allowing the aquatic Mon Calamari and Quarren to gain the advantage. Val then leads a boarding party of seatroopers and Imperial Knights, who quickly disarm and capture the disoriented pirates.
Refusing to accept defeat, Darth Luft's pirates have one last tactic. To ensure the compliance of their Mon Calamari and Quarren captives, the pirates have held their families hostage. In a final act, the pirates expose these captives to zero gravity space. The breach is temporarily sealed by the formation of a large ice plum at the exit to the space door. Ania and her companions manage to save many Mon Calamari and Quarren lives by using their Imperial communications droid to activate the door's controls. After a prolonged duel in the flooded shipyards, Jao Assam defeats Darth Luft by stabbing him with a lightsaber. With the pirates defeated, the freed Mon Calamari and Quarren slaves are allowed to live in the flooded interiors of the Mon Calamari shipyards.
Following the Liberation of Mon Calamari Shipyards, Jao Assam is reunited with Master Val. Despite knowing that desertion is punishable by death, Jao refuses to return to his duties as an Imperial Knight and continue his mission to hunt down Darth Wredd. Despite their differences, the two Imperial Knights part ways amicably. Jao and Ania continue their pursuit of Darth Wredd. While traveling through hyperspace, Jao receives a transmission from Darth Wredd, who gloatingly informs Jao that he has been manipulated by following his trail and killing Darth Luft. This brought the rogue Sith closer to completing his final plan. He even offered Jao a place in his new Sith Order, which would be based on the Rule of Two. Despite Jao's despair, Ania assures him that he has done good by liberating slaves. If they could free slaves, she reasoned that they could also take down an "arrogant" Sith.
