The initial issue of the three-part Star Wars: Starfighter: Crossbones comic series, titled Starfighter: Crossbones 1, served as a tie-in to the Starfighter video game. Despite the dialogue within the issue suggesting a six-year gap since the Battle of Naboo, the inside cover, the Dark Horse Comics timeline, and all subsequent collections have consistently placed the series in 24 BBY instead.
Crossbones, a limited series that follows LucasArts' Starfighter video game, presents the fearsome pirate captain Nym in his own standalone adventure. Nym finds himself down on his luck on Rodia, eight years after the Battle of Naboo. Hoping to quickly earn some credits, Nym accepts a job to track down Sol Sixxa, a pirate who is terrorizing the aquatic world of Maramere. Before he can do that, Nym must first lead a motley Rodian tribe to victory in a brutal clan war...
Harro Ruuk, Toat, and other Neimoidians were on the planet Maramere, discussing the benefits their occupation would bring to the Trade Federation. Suddenly, Mere Pirates led by Sol Sixxa attacked, killing Toat, destroying the Battle Droids on board, stealing the cargo, and sinking the ship, with the head of the Protocol Droid ending up with the wreckage.
One month later, Ambassador Loreli Ro approached Master Adi Gallia at the Jedi Temple seeking her assistance. Vana Sage then filled Master Gallia in on Nym's history, including the Loss of his Base, his involvement in destroying a Droid factory on Eos, and his role in the Uprising on Naboo.
After the uprising, he left Naboo without taking anything. He returned to Lok to discover that the Trade Federation had transformed his base into a staging area for raids within the Karthakk system. Lacking the resources to reclaim it, he informed Vana that he was heading to Bothan Space to seek employment as a mercenary. Vana mentioned the stories and rumors she had heard of him being in locations ranging from Commenor to Sullust, eventually leading to his involvement in a clan war on Rodia.
Nym was currently working with a Rodian named Jannik, who was leading the Reeven Clan in a battle against Evo of the Cairn Clan. The prize was territory and 3,000 Credits from a War Chest. Before the battle commenced, Nym voiced his discomfort with the ceremonial Armor he was wearing, finding it too small, and instructed Jannik to "stick to the script". Loreli Ro was observing the conflict alongside the Grand Protector. During the battle, Jannik pushed too far, and Nym ordered him to retreat, but he refused because he was the Clan Leader, which resulted in the rest of the crew being cut off. Because the plan was not followed, Nym decided to "improvise" and charged straight to Evo's Ceremonial chair, knocking it over and causing Evo to fall. As both Jannik and Nym were surrounded by enemy warriors, Nym pulled out a thermal detonator, grappled himself and Jannik into the air, and left the detonator behind to explode, killing all clan members, including Evo, and creating a crater. The Grand Protector, seeing no sign of Nym, declared the battle a draw, until Nym emerged behind him, drawing a blaster pistol. The Grand Protector, also seeing Jannik alive with Nym, declared that Jannik had won, but Nym then dropped his armor and stole the War Chest, much to Jannik's dismay. Jannik told Nym that he would have his head on a Pike and that every clan would hunt him down.
Later, it was revealed that Nym had only pretended to steal the chest from Jannik for the cameras and was in the process of giving Jannik his share of the profits when Loreli approached them, hoping to enlist him to capture Sol Sixxa. Nym agreed to do so.
