Plot summary

Part One

Joss Adren, a mechanic and also a contractor working on the Starlight Beacon, wraps up the packing of his clothing as he and his wife, Pikka, prepare to leave the space station which was only recently finished. Despite having previously insisted on punctuality, Pikka is now engrossed in her datapad, revealing to Joss that she's discovered a flaw in the station's power grid, prompting them to investigate despite the completion of their assignment.

As Joss and Pikka proceed to examine the situation, they encounter Shai Tennem, the station's administrator, conducting Admiral Pevel Kronara and a group of Jedi on a tour of the station. Concerned about being drawn into the tour despite the urgency of the power issue, Master Nib Assek, acting on the suggestion of her Padawan, Burryaga Agaburry, proposes that the couple be allowed to continue their work uninterrupted. They locate the problem within Conduit 398-GX14, situated near the entrance of Starlight Beacon's Jedi temple: a faulty resistor hub with the potential to disable power to the entire station if left unaddressed. Joss, the mechanic, attempts to rectify the issue using a spanner, but his hand proves too large, compelling Pikka to undertake the repair despite her lack of experience in such tasks. Reassured by her husband, they successfully resolve the problem together.

Following their departure from the station aboard the Galactic Republic cruiser, Third Horizon, Pikka drafts an incident report detailing the wiring issue for Administrator Tennem, while Joss strikes up a conversation with a Twi'lek working on the vessel's Longbeam cruisers. Suddenly, Admiral Kronara announces over the intercom that the Third Horizon is rerouting due to a distress signal originating from the Hetzal system, urging passengers with piloting or rescue skills to promptly notify the crew. Despite the Republic's prolonged period of peace, the Adrens are puzzled by the situation and volunteer their assistance.

Part Two

The Adrens made their way back to Starlight Beacon after the Battle of Kur. For a debriefing, they are brought before a council of prominent Galactic Republic officials. Chancellor Lina Soh, Jedi Master Avar Kriss, Admiral Pevel Kronara, Senator Izzet Noor, and other government officials made up the council. Joss apologized for not being at his best, as he had been celebrating at the Starlight Beacon's dedication. Kris asks the Adrens to explain how they were so important in helping defeat the Nihil during the battle. Pikka tries to say that they were simply trying to survive, but the council rejects the explanation. Pikka is forced to relive the stress and trauma of the battle when Admiral Kronara displays a hologram of it. He clarifies that the Adrens in the Aurora III were able to react and effectively combat the marauders when the Nihil began performing micro hyperspace jumps, while other Republic ships could not. Joss speculates that they may have been exceptional or used The Force, but these theories are dismissed. Soh inquires about the secret to their performance and whether it can be replicated in future encounters with the Nihil. Joss finally reveals that Pikka had accessed the Longbeam's operational code to alter the security systems prior to the battle. He tells the council that the couple are tinkers and prefer to thoroughly understand systems before using them. A Republic Defense Coalition member reprimands them and warns them that hacking military systems carries a significant legal penalty, but Joss defends his actions, stating that it was either that or die in combat. Joss goes on to explain to the council how he had his wife disable the code that linked all of the ship's thrusters together. By doing so, the pilot was able to control each thruster independently, making the ship much more maneuverable. Another RDC official stated that this made the ship vulnerable to stresses and potentially coming apart during flight. Pikka expressed confidence in her husband's piloting abilities. The couple was dismissed and returned to their quarters after their explanation was accepted. They intended to grab some food and then arrange for transportation back to Coruscant. Before they could leave, Admiral Kronara paid them a visit. He informed them that the council remained unconvinced that the Nihil threat had been eliminated and that the government was forming a task force to track down any remaining Nihil and gather more information about their operations. He wanted the Adrens to join because of their exceptional skills during the Great Hyperspace Disaster and subsequent actions against the Nihil. Pikka declined, stating that they had planned a two-week vacation on Amfar. She did, however, agree to join the task force after the vacation, which the admiral accepted.
