Stew (clone gunner)

During the Clone Wars, a sergeant known as Stew, a clone gunner, served the Galactic Republic. He was stationed on the Endurance, a Venator-class Star Destroyer, under the command of Admiral Shoan Kilian. In the year 21 BBY, while aboard the Endurance, he oversaw target practice for the clone cadets belonging to the Clone Youth Brigade. Among these cadets was Boba Fett, who had secretly joined the group using the alias "Lucky."

Biography

Stew, a clone sergeant and clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett, was grown on the planet Kamino. He served as a clone gunner in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. His post was aboard the Endurance, a Venator-class Star Destroyer commanded by Admiral Shoan Kilian. In 21 BBY, Stew supervised target practice for the clone cadets from the Clone Youth Brigade while they toured the Endurance. After Jax and Whiplash, two cadets, missed their targets, a third cadet, known as "Lucky," successfully destroyed his mechanical skeet with a single shot.

Stew and Kilian instruct the cadets.

Stew, dismissing this as luck, launched three more skeet in a tri-attack pattern. To his surprise, "Lucky" once again hit all targets without a miss. Unbeknownst to the gunner, "Lucky" was actually Boba Fett, a pure clone of Jango Fett, who was the source for the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic. Fett had boarded the Endurance intending to assassinate Jedi Master Mace Windu to avenge his "father"'s killing during the First Battle of Geonosis. Shortly after the practice, Fett sabotaged the Star Destroyer's reactor, crippling the ship and forcing the crew to evacuate as the Endurance crashed onto the surface of Vanqor.

Personality and traits

Stew at his post aboard the Endurance

Stew, like all clones derived from the human male Jango Fett, was 1.83 meters tall (6 ft, had tan skin, and weighed eighty kilograms. During the cadet's target practice on the Endurance, Stew displayed a sense of humor. When Cadet Jax inquired about the targets, Stew jokingly said they used malfunctioning droids, which greatly alarmed the astromech droid R2-D2. Stew was impressed by Boba Fett's flawless accuracy and agreed with Admiral Kilian that "Lucky" was "a cadet to watch."

Skills and abilities

Stew possessed great skill as a gunner, able to destroy a skeet with a single, accurate shot.

Equipment

As with all clone troopers, Stew had a behavioral modification biochip implanted at birth by Kaminoan scientists. This chip ensured compliance with specific orders. Stew wore a customized set of Phase I clone trooper armor. His armor's plating, knee-guards, and gauntlets were colored brown, as were the cheeks and neck-guard of his helmet. A red symbol was on his left shoulder plate, and his helmet featured yellow-and-black eyes on a red field above the visor.

Behind the scenes

Stew, initially called "Fury" in concept art by David Le Merrer (piece), first appeared unnamed in "Death Trap," episode twenty of Star Wars: The Clone Wars' second season. This canon episode aired on April 17, 2010, with Dee Bradley Baker providing the voice. Leland Chee confirmed the character's name as Stew via Twitter, a fact later repeated in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season Two home-video set, released on October 26, 2010.
