Plot summary

The Ship's Malfunction

The Star Herald was journeying through the distant reaches of The galaxy referred to as Wild Space. Aboard the Star Herald, CR-8R, known as "Crater," and BB-00, nicknamed "Boo," were attempting to diagnose a mechanical issue with the vessel. Emil Graf questioned the two droids about the nature of the problem, but their opinions differed. Crater suspected the fuel cells were the source of the trouble, while Boo believed there was a fault with the hyperdrive. Crater declared that this issue was not easily solved, but Emil disagreed, suggesting it might be. He inquired if Crater was familiar with the tale of the Flat Mountain of Yavin. Crater admitted he was not, and Emil began to recount the story.

Saving the Rebellion

Evaan Verlaine knocked out an Imperial officer.

More than thirty decades prior, the Rebel Alliance had just destroyed the First Death Star during the Battle of Yavin, but the Galactic Empire was initiating an attack against the celebrating rebels. As the Empire attacked the Rebel base, Princess Leia inquired about the situation from a rebel trooper, who informed her that the evacuation was in progress, but most of the Rebel personnel remained inside the base. The princess responded by saying that Evaan Verlaine's hands held their fate. Aboard an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, Evaan Verlaine incapacitated the last Imperial officer with a forceful punch to the head, witnessed by fellow rebel troopers.

Crater interrupted Emil Graf's narrative, curious about how they managed to infiltrate and seize control of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Emil explained that the full story was for another time, but in short, a proton torpedo was deployed onto the star destroyer. However, this was not the most challenging task that Evaan and the rebels would encounter that day.

Returning to the evacuation scene, a rebel trooper informed Evaan Verlaine that the controls were locked, and the access codes were unresponsive. Evaan inquired about the implications, and the rebel explained that they had only five minutes before the star destroyer would focus its full firepower on the base. Evaan declared the need for a new, rapid plan. The trooper argued that there was insufficient time to bypass the security protocol. Other troopers began suggesting ideas as Evaan attempted to speak. Instead, she stormed off, announcing that she would handle the situation personally. She dashed into the hangar and boarded a Raider-class corvette. She started the corvette and flew into the ongoing space battle. She maneuvered the ship around the base and then steered directly toward the star destroyer. Before impact, she quickly moved to the escape pods and ejected, while the ship continued its descent toward the star destroyer. The corvette collided with the star destroyer, but it appeared to have barely altered the star destroyer's firing trajectory toward the rebel base. The rebel soldiers inside reported that they felt nothing, and Evaan Verlaine, watching from the escape pod, believed that the Rebel Alliance was doomed.

The star destroyer fired upon the rebel base, but narrowly missed, striking the mountains behind it. Evaan cheered from her escape pod, and the rebel troopers celebrated from the star destroyer. From the surface, Princess Leia contacted Evaan, informing her that the evacuation was complete and congratulating her.

A Quick Repair

Back on the Star Hound, Emil Graf concluded the story, explaining to Crater that even though the Empire would reclaim the star destroyer, Evaan's actions had enabled the Rebel Alliance to safely evacuate the planet. Emil picked up a screwdriver and told Crater that "even the smallest things can have a huge impact", as he tightened a loose screw, restoring their ship's functionality.
