Plot summary

Escaping the Nameless

In 382 BBY, Coron Solstus, a Padawan, fights against the effects of the Nameless while Jedi Master Rok Buran uses his lightsaber to cut through the rear hull of the Path of the Open Hand's vessel. In the present timeline, KL-03 ("KL0") requests that Ty Yorrick resume her narration. Yorrick initially declines, but KL0 reveals their current location: a planet plagued by an acklay that is terrorizing the local population. KLO reminds her that she has expressed a desire to encounter an acklay. Yorrick then agrees to descend to the planet's surface and continue the story of Rok and Coron.

Returning to the past, Buran and Solstus manage to escape into the crashed ship before the Nameless can reach them. Buran employs the Force to barricade the opening with a large container. Solstus senses the Nameless moving away from the ship as its influence diminishes. Buran remarks on their good fortune in escaping the ravenous creature. When Solstus expresses self-criticism for succumbing to fear, Buran reassures him that feeling scared is acceptable. He emphasizes the importance of not allowing fear to dictate their actions but instead confronting it. Before they can locate the other Jedi, they encounter three disciples from the Path of the Closed Fist, the same ones who previously fought their comrades.

A calm in the storm

Meanwhile, in the ship's cargo hold, Master Sula Badani detects that the Nameless has departed. Ambar suggests that Pako's strategy was successful in driving the creature away. Badani concurs that Pako's plan worked, but she also notes that her connection to the Force has been weakened. While Ambar administers an injection to the incapacitated Xinith Tarl, she inquires whether Badani is still experiencing the aftereffects of being too close to the creature. As a result of Ambar's injection, Tarl begins to awaken.

When Badani informs Tarl that the creature is gone, Tarl warns of ongoing danger and the need to alert the others. Ambar advises her to remain still due to her serious injuries. Shortly thereafter, Pako and EX-5A rejoin them. After embracing Pako, Ambar acknowledges the success of his plan. Pako reveals that he has exhausted the ship's remaining power. Ambar assures him that they will find alternative means of sending a distress signal, including other power sources or beacons. Pako commends Ambar for maintaining order in his absence and expresses pleasure at seeing Master Tarl's recovery.

Upon hearing the Nameless creature approaching, Pako realizes that the electrical charge only temporarily incapacitates it. Badani responds that the creature's overwhelming hunger supersedes its sense of self-preservation, making it even more dangerous than they initially believed. Master Tarl believes the Nameless creature poses a greater threat than any the Jedi have previously encountered. Badani is initially relieved to see Rok and Coron but is taken aback by the presence of the Path disciples.

Helping the disciples

Pako voices his distrust of the Path disciples, prompting Shalish, the female human disciple, to point out that he was the one who shot Geth, who is currently being supported by the Rodian disciple Wole. Pako retorts that the Path attacked him, Sula, and their ship first. Master Buran intervenes to de-escalate the situation, declaring an end to the violence. He explains that the disciples are seeking medical assistance, which surprises Master Badani.

Wole accuses the Jedi of stealing their medical supplies and reminds them of their supposed obligation to provide unconditional help. Master Tarl agrees to allow their medic, Ambar, to assist, but she warns the disciples that the Jedi will not tolerate any violence and expects them to accept their help with gratitude. Badani pledges her support to Tarl and Buran. When Pako expresses his opposition to helping the Disciples after the trouble they caused, Solstus argues that they are all in this predicament together and must cooperate to escape. Pako struggles with the concept of working with their enemies. Buran counters that they will offer assistance to anyone in need. Shalish reluctantly accepts the Jedi's assistance and allows them to treat Geth.

Ambar requests that the Jedi clear away several "gemstones" to create space for Geth to rest. Wole reveals to Shalish that their starship was a transport vessel carrying valuable gemstones. Master Buran informs Pako and Ambar that they will leave the planet once they have addressed the Nameless threat. When questioned by Badani, Buran confirms that he and Solstus encountered the Nameless creature and narrowly escaped. Solstus recalls feeling disoriented by the creature and wonders about its nature. Buran remembers that the Path disciple they encountered earlier seemed to possess knowledge of the creature and claimed it would destroy the Jedi.

Master Badani infers that Buran assisted the disciples to keep them under observation. Buran confirms this and states that they must warn the Jedi Council about their discovery. Badani asserts that they must escape the ship and find a way to neutralize the creature outside. Buran and Solstus caution that the Nameless creature cannot be defeated by lightsabers or logic. Badani recalls that Pako temporarily stunned the creature by redirecting residual power from the engines to electrify the hull.

Pako suggests luring the creature back inside the ship and using the remaining power to detonate the engines. While Solstus supports the idea, Badani considers it too risky due to the presence of injured individuals. Buran replies that the Jedi take risks to protect those trapped with them. He reiterates the need to warn the Jedi Council. Meanwhile, Wole convinces Shalish that they should detonate their ship along with its cargo. When Pako points out that they will need assistance disabling the ship's safety protocols, Vole offers his services but notes that they cannot start the engines since Pako exhausted the ship's power when electrifying the hull. Solstus and EX-5 then propose connecting the residual power in the front section of the ship to the engine. Pako agrees to that plan.

Interlude

Back in the present, Yorrick pilots her starship toward a green planet, identified by KL0 as the home of the acklay. When KL0 accuses her of straying from the story, Yorrick retorts that he was manipulating her with a "so-called mission." KL0 insists that he has been truthful about the acklay and adds that people require her assistance. When Yorrick questions his motives, KL0 suggests that she is overthinking the situation and wonders whether her thoughts have been clouded by the fears and uncertainties of the people below.

KLO inquires about how the Pathfinders could begin to trust the Disciples and how they intended to evacuate the injured before the ship detonated. He also asks about the Nameless eggs in the hold and Solstus. Continuing the story, Yorrick says that Solstus was considering going back outside to restore the ship power and that he faced the situation fearlessly.

A bold gambit

In the past, Solstus volunteers to return to the front compartment of the Path ship to restart the engines. Master Badani begins to object, but Master Buran counters that Solstus is well-suited for the mission and volunteers to accompany him. Badani relents on the condition that the two watch each others' backs.

When Badani asks Shalish and Wole if they know anything about the Nameless creature they are facing, Shalish claims ignorance and suggests it was a native predator. Buran counters that her late friend Kane had told them the creature was a weapon that would bring the Jedi to their knees. Shalish expresses shock at learning about Kane's death but suggests that Kane was trying to scare the Jedi. She says that she, Wole and Geth are disciples who have no knowledge about the weapon that Kane is referring to. Badani accepts Shalish's account but warns her and her companions not to "play games" with the Jedi.

Badani accompanies Pako, Shalish and Wole into the engine room. With the creature closing in on them, Wole begins breaching the ship's five levels of safety protocols but is unable to proceed due to the ship's low power. Shalish then suggests using the droid EX-5A as a battery and conduit for accessing the ship's safety systems. Since EX-5 is hesitant, Pako reassures his droid that he will protect her. Wole then tasks Shalish with recalibrating the fried power regulators, which she grumpily complies.

Elsewhere, Buran and Solstus discuss their plan, which involves going back through the hole that Buran had cut in the hull. Solstus' plan involves Buran luring the creature away while he heads for the front section of the ship with a cable. Buran tells Solstus that the next stage would involve returning to the rear section to evacuate the others. Buran tells Solstus not to worry about him and that he is prepared to die so that the others can escape. Buran plans to lure the creature back inside the ship if Pako is able to restart the ship's engines. When Solstus ask if Shalish was telling the truth about not knowing about the creature, Buran says it doesn't matter.

Change of plans

Putting their plan into action, Buran removes the crate with the Force and attempts to distract the Nameless creature while Solstus runs with the cable to the front section of the ship. However, Solstus' plan goes awry when the Nameless creature instead abandons pursuing Buran and races inside the ship. Buran tasks Solstus with getting the ship's power restored while he returns to evacuate the others.

Meanwhile, Wole succeeds in disabling the third level of safety protocols with the assistance of Pako. When Wole asks why he chooses to align with the Jedi despite the danger they pose, Pako explains that the Jedi have done much to help the people of the galactic frontier. While Shalish is recalibrating the power regulators, she is alarmed by the roar of the creature. Badani also hears the creature's roar and ventures deeper into the ship to confront it.

Elsewhere in the cargo hold, Master Tarl senses that the Nameless creature is here and ignites her lightsaber. Ambar warns that she should not be moving due to her injuries. Tarl tells Ambar to watch over her other patient while she ensures that nothing gets through the door. In the background, several of the "gemstones" begin hatching, revealing them to be Nameless eggs.
