Wedding of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade

The marital union between Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade occurred on Coruscant in 19 ABY, a short time after the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This event consisted of a pair of weddings: the initial one, a more intimate ceremony at Jedi Headquarters, was restricted to members of the New Jedi Order. The second was a sizable public celebration that ex-Moff Derran Takkar attempted to disrupt. Kam Solusar presided over the ceremonies, and Talon Karrde escorted Mara.

The upcoming nuptials of Luke and Mara on Coruscant were announced by Leia Organa Solo, Luke's sister. The announcement was met with criticism, with some viewing the wedding as the foundation of a "Force Empire" or a peace treaty. Leia tasked C-3PO with "managing" the crowd. The protocol droid began recounting his initial encounter with Luke, but his narrative meandered, causing widespread boredom. This saved Han the necessity of resorting to blaster fire, primarily because he lacked sufficient ammunition. Leia suggested he bring the Falcon next time.

Later, Leia persuaded Mara to try on various dresses for the second wedding, using the expression "minimal is maximal." They examined at least seven dresses: a revealing brown dress, a masked gown, a luminescent green dress, a dress designed to Mara's specifications, a neo-Imperial cloak reminiscent of the groom's father, a dress intended for Hutts, and one that she refused to even try on. Frustrated, Mara fled into the streets of Coruscant.

There, she encountered a solitary Twi'lek, Jari'kyn, who had been dismissed by her boss for creating a superior wedding dress. Mara was impressed by Jari'kyn's designs and hired her as the new dressmaker.

The Private Ceremony

Surrounded by their fellow Jedi at the Jedi Temple, Luke and Mara were wed by Kam Solusar. After the joining of their bonding stones, they were unofficially pronounced husband and wife. In a gesture of respect, all the assembled Jedi activated their lightsabers.

At Luke's bachelor party at the Red Rancor, he was surprised by a gathering of friends: Han, Wedge Antilles, Chewbacca, Gavin Darklighter, Talon Karrde, Wes Janson, Tycho Celchu, Derek Klivian, Kam Solusar, Corran Horn, Booster Terrik, and Lando Calrissian. Unfortunately, Luke was inadvertently caught in a brawl stemming from an assassination attempt; he was rescued by Banner Sumptor, who, despite his moral reservations about assisting the Moffs in disrupting the wedding, intervened. Additionally, Chik Apla was discovered attempting to assassinate Mara. Consequently, the Moffs devised backup plans, including stealing the dress and infiltrating the wedding.

The following day, Mara, Leia, Tionne Solusar, Winter Celchu, Mirax Terrik Horn, and Iella Wessiri Antilles held their bachelorette party at a spa, keeping it secret from their husbands. While enjoying the hot springs and mud baths, the women defeated Champion Squadron in a game of slingball.

Mara expressed her annoyance with Luke upon learning about his involvement in a bar fight the night before their wedding.

On the day of the second wedding, the guests awaited Jari'kyn's arrival with the dresses. Regrettably, a group of thugs, led by Anlys Takkar, the wife of Derran Takkar, attempted to murder Jari'kyn and seize the dresses. However, Banner betrayed Anlys and assisted Jari'kyn in reaching the wedding in time to warn everyone. To maintain the wedding's progress without causing widespread panic, Luke, Han, and Talon Karrde were required to be present during the ceremony, while Rogue Squadron, Chewbacca, and the other Jedi addressed the impending attacks. C-3PO and Jacen Solo served as ushers. They dealt with swoop gangs, attempts to release gas into the area, and thugs from the bar. Fortunately, the latter were frightened away by Booster Terrik, who was ensuring the children remained asleep.

Unfortunately, these events were a diversion for Derran, who had infiltrated the wedding through the sewers disguised as an Ithorian. As Admiral Gial Ackbar began the opening remarks, Derran revealed his true identity and threatened to cripple all communications within the New Republic with a virus. Luke engaged him in conversation, inferring that despite his aversion to peace, he could still benefit from it. Takkar relented, and the ceremony resumed. The virus, in any case, would have been ineffective, as the Republic had shielded itself since retaking Coruscant. Luke and Mara exchanged their vows and rings and were declared husband and wife. They then shared a dance under the moonlight.

Production Notes

The wedding between Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade was initially referenced in Timothy Zahn's 1998 novel, Vision of the Future. It was subsequently depicted in the 1999-2000 comic book series, Star Wars: Union.

George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, expressed that the narratives presented in the Expanded Universe following the events of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, which notably include the marriage of Luke Skywalker, do not align with his vision for the Jedi, as he believes the primary Star Wars story concludes with the tragedy of Darth Vader.
