Barokki

Barokki, a male human, achieved the rank of colonel within the Galactic Empire during the initial reign of the Empire.

Biography

Service to the Empire

In the Galactic Empire's early rule, Barokki held the position of Imperial colonel, commanding his own division as a member of the Imperial Officer Corps. Barokki eventually delivered a personal report on his division's performance to Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Darth Vader, Palpatine's enforcer, displeased with the report, initiated a Force choke on Barokki. After a time, Palpatine instructed Vader to release Barokki, expressed his gratitude for the report, and conveyed his hope for improved performance from Barokki's division in the coming weeks.

Assassinating a Sith Lord

Driven by resentment towards Vader's rapid ascent to power and influence, Barokki and a fellow Imperial officer, an accomplice, conspired to assassinate the Sith Lord. Their initial attempt involved a mercenary contract issued from Emperor Palpatine's office to Chanath Cha, Ramat Cha, and Bhada Cha, tasking them to kill Vader, alongside a fabricated Jedi sighting at a bar on Cabarria. Vader successfully defeated the bounty hunters and traced the contract back to Palpatine's office.

A second attempt occurred upon Vader's return to Coruscant aboard his personal starship. Vader detected individuals with Level 1A1 clearance, granting them access to the highest levels of the Imperial Executive Building, including Palpatine's office, upon his arrival. The starship was misidentified as belonging to a Separatist splinter cell, leading to the jamming of its transmissions. Unable to transmit clearance codes, Vader's ship was targeted by a Coruscant Security Force missile platform. The ship crashed on Coruscant, but Vader and Ninth Sister survived. Suspecting Palpatine was testing him, Vader confronted his Sith Master at the former Jedi Temple, where he discovered Palpatine was not behind the attacks.

Barokki is called forward by Lord Vader

While Vader meditated to uncover the truth, Barokki secretly convened with his co-conspirator in The Room of Masks, located in Coruscant's Uscru District. His accomplice informed him that Vader had survived both assassination attempts and had been seen with Palpatine, showing no signs of conflict. Barokki's accomplice speculated that Vader was either unaware of the link to the Emperor's office or that they had reached an understanding. Barokki was puzzled by the relationship between Palpatine and Vader. After his co-conspirator questioned Vader's unchecked power and wondered if he was a servant or bodyguard, Barokki suggested it was something more and revealed that Palpatine had appointed Vader as the leader of the Inquisitorius program. Barokki dismissed this, asserting that they must continue their attempts to eliminate Vader, believing that clarity and improved governance would follow.

Despite his counterpart's doubts, Barokki insisted that Vader was either skilled, fortunate, or both, and that continued attempts would eventually succeed, as all things eventually perish. During this conversation, Vader experienced a vision of Force choking Barokki, realizing his involvement in the assassination attempts. After Vader informed Palpatine of his discovery, Palpatine summoned the elite officers of the Imperial Officer Corps to an auditorium, including Barokki and his accomplice.

There, Palpatine declared that these officers would form the foundation of the Empire's efforts to bring peace to the galaxy, acknowledging potential confusion regarding the hierarchy and stating that it was time to eliminate such doubts. He then introduced Vader as his voice, stating that any command from Vader was equivalent to a command from himself. Vader then called upon Corin Ferro, Zorta Bingan, Joon Strephi, Tomas Azoras, and Barokki, who became increasingly anxious, to step forward. Vader announced that he had been targeted in two assassination attempts by members of the Imperial Officer Corps, and while he did not know the exact identities of the attackers, he had his suspicions. Vader continued, stating that it was insignificant as he would always survive, and that every time he would survive. Vader then mentioned that the five officers chosen at random, including Barokki, would not, and proceeded to Force choke them all to death. Barokki's co-conspirator witnessed the event as Vader departed.

Personality and traits

Barokki, a human male, possessed red hair and fair skin. Driven by jealousy of Darth Vader's sudden rise within the Imperial hierarchy, Barokki participated in assassination attempts aimed at eliminating Vader. Despite the failure of both attempts, Barokki maintained the belief that Vader would eventually perish, as all things are mortal, if their plot persisted. He disregarded Vader's role in serving Emperor Palpatine, believing that clarity would emerge once Vader was eliminated.

Skills and abilities

Despite his division's subpar performance, Barokki's skills as an Imperial officer were sufficient for him to be considered an elite member of the Imperial Officer Corps. Barokki collaborated with his accomplice to orchestrate the conspiracy against Darth Vader and attempted to sow discord between Palpatine and Vader by linking the mercenary contract to the Emperor's office, though his endeavors proved futile.

Equipment

As an Empire colonel, Barokki wore an early iteration of the Imperial military uniforms. His cap featured an officer's disk, and he displayed a rank insignia plaque on the left side of his chest. When meeting his co-conspirator in secret, Barokki donned a helmet with a protrusion at the top and three stacked visors.

Behind the scenes

Barokki's first appearance, though unnamed, was in the 2017 canon comic Darth Vader (2017) 8, with his identification occurring later in the 2018 issue Darth Vader (2017) 12. Both issues were authored by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Inconsistencies existed in Barokki's uniform. In The Dying Light, Part II, Barokki is shown wearing a rank insignia plaque consisting of four red squares above four blue squares. However, in The Rule of Five, Part II, he is depicted with six red squares above another six red squares, and later with at least five red squares above five blue squares.
