Bruck Chun

Bruck Chun, a Human male from Telos IV, was a Jedi Initiate showing promise in the Force. This twelve-year-old was training at the Jedi Temple's academy during the waning years of the Galactic Republic.

Biography

At the Temple academy

Born in 57 BBY to Vox Chun of Telos IV, Bruck Chun, blessed with the Force, possessed white hair and striking ice-blue eyes. He was the brother of Kad Chun. Dedicated to the Jedi Order for training in the Force, Initiate Chun found himself enrolled in the academy located within the Coruscant Jedi Temple. He struck up a friendship with a fellow Initiate named Aalto. Together, Chun and Aalto frequently teased Obi-Wan Kenobi, mockingly calling him "Oafy-Wan" after an incident where Kenobi lost his balance and accidentally collided with Chun. He also made numerous attempts to capture the attention of Siri Tachi, a captivating Initiate, but his efforts proved unsuccessful, leading him to eventually give up.

Around 45 BBY and 44 BBY, Chun secretly discovered from Xanatos, a Dark Jedi and business associate of his father, that Vox Chun held the position of Treasurer of Telos. He later boasted about this information to Siri Tachi, a detail she would later recall during a future investigation.

As both Chun and Kenobi approached the culmination of their training at the academy, they both sought the attention of a Jedi Master in the hopes of being chosen as a Padawan. During an unsupervised sparring match, Chun intentionally provoked Kenobi, resulting in both students sustaining minor injuries. In an attempt to get Kenobi into trouble with the academy instructors, Chun sought treatment for his injuries at the Halls of Healing while falsely claiming that Kenobi had attacked him. Instead of punishing Kenobi as Chun had hoped, Grand Master Yoda organized a duel between the two Initiates to showcase their abilities to Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who was visiting. Despite the fair completion of the duel, Master Jinn did not choose either of the Initiates, much to Chun's disappointment. By this point, Chun had transitioned from using the Temple's standard training lightsabers to wielding a red-bladed weapon reserved for senior Initiates.

In the months that followed, Kenobi was eventually selected by Master Jinn, but their Master-apprentice relationship dissolved after the ill-fated mission to Melida/Daan. There, Padawan Kenobi abandoned his oath to the Order and joined a militant faction known as the Young, participating in the Melida/Daan Civil War. Upon his return to the Temple without his Padawan, Master Jinn disregarded Initiate Chun's attempts to persuade him to accept him as his next student.

Betraying the Order

Disheartened by Master Jinn's persistent refusal to take him as an apprentice, Chun became susceptible to the allure of Xanatos's promises. Corrupted by Xanatos, Chun aided the Dark Jedi in infiltrating the Temple and causing chaos. As a pawn of the manipulative former Jedi, Chun pilfered numerous artifacts from within the Temple, including the invaluable Healing Crystals of Fire. He was secretly discovered by Jinn and Master Tahl while concealing some of the stolen items in the Temple's Lake Level. Jinn attempted to pursue him, but Tahl's navigation droid 2JTJ inadvertently alerted Chun to the Jedi's presence, forcing him to flee. Maintaining close proximity to the masters, Chun transmitted recordings of conversations with the Jedi using a transmitter secretly embedded in his lightsaber hilt.

When Xanatos was eventually exposed, he abducted Initiate Bant Eerin and confined her underwater in the Room of a Thousand Fountains. While Master Jinn tried to stop Xanatos from stealing the Temple's supply of valuable vertex, the Dark Jedi instructed Chun to immediately kill Initiate Eerin. Kenobi pursued Chun to the Room of a Thousand Fountains and engaged him in a lightsaber duel. They ascended the slippery slope of the chamber's central waterfall. As Kenobi struggled to disengage from Chun in order to rescue Initiate Eerin, who was chained at the bottom of the room's lake, Chun lost his balance and tumbled over the edge of the waterfall. Chun desperately tried to hold on, but his grip failed. Kenobi, not wanting him to die, reached out to help, but it was too late for the young Initiate. Chun lost his grip and plummeted to the rocks below, suffering a fatal broken neck.

Legacy

Following his death, Chun's father initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his son's demise. Enlisting Senator Sano Sauro as the prosecutor, Initiate Kenobi was implicated in the death of his peer. Appearing before the Senate's Inquiry committee, Kenobi was saved from prosecution by Master Jinn. Presenting Chun's recovered lightsaber as evidence, Jinn played the recording of Chun's final words for the committee. The evidence exonerated Kenobi, but it would take many years before Chun's brother, Kad, could forgive Kenobi, and before Kenobi could forgive himself.

Personality and traits

Obi-Wan Kenobi characterized Bruck Chun as both cruel and manipulative. Even Yoda and Mace Windu recognized Chun's deceitful nature. He placed a high value on his dignity and was known for harboring grudges. This was particularly evident after Obi-Wan accidentally tripped him in the Jedi Temple's halls, leading Chun to view him as an enemy. Chun was also prone to impatience and quick to anger. Yoda seemed to have assisted him in addressing these shortcomings. Nevertheless, he was extremely eager to become Qui-Gon Jinn's Padawan, mirroring Kenobi's aspirations. Siri Tachi described him as a showoff and "bore."

When Chun's hopes of becoming a Padawan were dashed, Xanatos exploited his vulnerabilities. He turned the Initiate to the dark side, teaching him cunning and encouraging him to dwell on his hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Powers and abilities

During his sparring matches with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, Chun executed acrobatic leaps toward his opponents, indicating that his style might have incorporated elements of Ataru. He even attempted to emulate Siri Tachi's fighting style during training exercises. At the age of 11, possibly younger, Chun demonstrated the ability to duel while blindfolded, a technique he employed during a fight with Obi-Wan. However, Obi-Wan emerged victorious in this match, greatly infuriating Chun.

After his conversion to the dark side, it was believed that Chun had been taught Force stealth by Xanatos.

Behind the scenes

Bruck Chun's character was conceived by the author Dave Wolverton for the inaugural young readers novel, Jedi Apprentice: The Rising Force, within the Jedi Apprentice series. He was later utilized by Jude Watson, who authored the remainder of the series, and appeared in the novel The Uncertain Path before his death in The Captive Temple.
