Caled Galfridian

During the Yuuzhan Vong War in 25 ABY, Caled Galfridian was a Human male hailing from Artorias. He held the title of King of Artorias, sharing his life with his queen, Nina, and their two offspring, Finn and Kaye. A veteran of the Galactic Civil War, Caled notably participated in the Battle of Hoth alongside the Rebel Alliance. When the Yuuzhan Vong launched their invasion, he also fought in the defense of his homeworld, although the planet ultimately fell. Despite the tragic loss of his wife and daughter to the invaders, Caled established a guerrilla resistance movement to both impede the Yuuzhan Vong and search for his loved ones. His son, Finn, managed to escape the planet and subsequently joined the New Jedi Order under the guidance of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

Biography

Battle of Artorias

Before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion that struck Artorias in 25 ABY, Caled reigned over a peaceful planet lacking even a basic defense system. On the day the attack began, Caled was reprimanding his son, Finn, for his reckless behavior. Their argument was abruptly interrupted by a massive explosion, prompting Caled to immediately retrieve blasters from the weapons locker.

The king, accompanied by his son, hastened towards the marketplace with the intention of rescuing Caled's wife, Nina, and daughter, Kaye, but the surrounding chaos prevented their progress. Caled directed his people to seek refuge in the shipyards, providing cover for their retreat. The two Galfridians secured the hangar doors, but the building soon came under siege by numerous Yuuzhan Vong warriors. Adding to the dire situation, Caled received information from his friend, Dulac, revealing that all the ships had been sabotaged by a Yuuzhan Vong operative. He tasked Finn and his droid, Prowl, with repairing the damaged ships while he and the remaining defenders braced for the impending assault. The siege proved futile when Jedi Master Luke Skywalker intervened, cutting down the Yuuzhan Vong warriors and saving the Artorians.

Caled greeted his former comrade-in-arms, who informed the king that the New Republic had dispatched ships to evacuate the population. Caled personally declined the evacuation offer, emphasizing his duty as king to defend Artorias and search for any trace of his wife and daughter. Despite Finn's insistence on staying with his father, Caled convinced him that, should he die, the Artorians would need a king. Caled quickly assembled a strike team to launch an attack on the Yuuzhan Vong invaders positioned at the nearby beach. The strike team was last seen engaging the Yuuzhan Vong in the surf.

Meanwhile, after demonstrating his Force ability by sensing his mother and sister in danger, Finn was recruited by Skywalker for Jedi training at the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4. Nina and Kaye had been overwhelmed by Yuuzhan Vong warriors in the marketplace, and although Kaye managed to kill one of them, the two Galfridians were forced onto a Yuuzhan Vong slaveship and imprisoned.

Leading the Resistance

From a hidden underwater base, Caled spearheaded the resistance, launching strikes against the Yuuzhan Vong's Vongforming efforts on Artorias. Their missions resulted in numerous sentries being killed, necessitating replacements. These reinforcements were sourced from the slaveship Tsam P'ah, which held many of Artorias' people captive. The reduced number of guards on the slaveship allowed the prisoners to stage a revolt. Concurrently, Caled led a mission to rescue his friend Dulac, succeeding in bringing him back to their base.

Finn holds his wounded father.

On Nar Shaddaa, Finn discovered through a holocron that Dulac was, in reality, a Yuuzhan Vong disguised using an ooglith masquer. He urgently returned to Artorias with Jacen and Jaina Solo to warn his father. However, he arrived too late, as Dulac had already revealed his true nature to Caled and attacked him. Despite being caught off guard, Caled initially held his own in the fight, but Dulac gradually gained the upper hand. The timely intervention of Prowl, who shot Dulac on Finn's command, brought the struggle to an end. Realizing his imminent demise, Dulac unleashed a final, desperate attack: a plaeryin bol. The venom struck the king directly in the face. Jacen and Jaina swiftly eliminated Dulac, but Caled was already gravely wounded.

A Father's Goodbye

After Jacen and Jaina's attempts to heal him failed, Finn sought out his father for one last meeting. Caled expressed his joy at seeing his son as a Jedi apprentice and requested to see Finn's lightsaber. Admiring the weapon, Caled acknowledged the anger he sensed within Finn and cautioned him against acting rashly. He then recounted the story of how he met Nina, shortly after the death of his first wife, the mother of Finn and Kaye. He and a group of soldiers had been tasked with removing a slaver named Dowron from the planet. Dowron held Nina as a slave, and after Caled freed her, she killed Dowron with her own hands. Caled admitted that, at the time, he was consumed by anger over the loss of his first wife and focused solely on fighting the evil on Artorias, neglecting the good. Only Nina's unwavering love for him and his children managed to quell his anger.

He confided in Finn that he and Nina had always recognized Kaye's potential as a leader but were uncertain about Finn's path. He said Nina would be proud of Finn's journey to becoming a Jedi, and that he himself was proud of his son. Caled then attempted to persuade Finn to leave Artorias, arguing that the Resistance's attacks were futile. Finn disagreed, explaining how the Yuuzhan Vong's lack of a Force signature had led to the death Jedi Master Lar Le'Ung during the Evacuation of Rychel, and that he could, in fact, sense the Yuuzhan Vong. Finn confessed his belief that this ability made him a freak, but his father reassured him that it was not, suggesting it might even be a gift. Finn apologized for not arriving sooner, but Caled replied that he was grateful to see the man his son would become. Caled reiterated his conviction that Finn needed to evacuate his people off-world, and when Finn began to argue that it was their planet, Caled simply kissed his forehead and said that some things were more important than a planet. Caled then asked Finn to leave so he could record a message to Nina with Prowl. In the recording, Caled told Nina that he had always known she had a secret, but knew he would tell her children someday. After Caled finished the recording, Finn returned and placed his hand on his father. The King of Artorias was now deceased.
