The twentieth episode of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television program's third season, titled "Citadel Rescue," was initially broadcast on March 11, 2011.
"Following the destruction of their vessel, which was also their sole means of planetary departure, Anakin and Obi-Wan are compelled to guide the escaped detainees across the treacherous terrain of Lola Sayu. Simultaneously, Plo Koon leads a naval unit consisting of four cruisers and their respective fighter squadrons through the Separatist defenses in a high-stakes rescue mission. Even Piell suffers greatly from anooba tracking beasts, but before his demise, he transmits his Nexus Routes coordinates to Ahsoka. Upon the survivors' return to Coruscant, Ahsoka, possessing half of the intelligence, declines to share it with anyone except the Jedi Council, while Tarkin insists on delivering his portion solely to the Chancellor."
Even Piell and R2-D2 establish communication with the Jedi High Council after having secured temporary shelter within the caves. They are informed that Master Plo Koon—supported by Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, and Adi Gallia—is already en route to extract them. However, the rescue operation is constrained by a limited timeframe; the designated rendezvous point is a small island located in a lava lake, encircled by a mountainous ridge. Immediately after the call concludes, a detachment of commando droids launches an assault, compelling them to relocate. Meanwhile, Osi Sobeck receives a communication from Count Dooku, who expresses displeasure regarding his failure to recapture the prisoners thus far. Nevertheless, Dooku grants him another opportunity to either succeed or definitively fail. Anxious to further avoid Count Dooku's displeasure, Sobeck deploys a pack of Anooba to pursue the Jedi, while simultaneously reinforcing the space blockade surrounding the planet to prevent further incursions.
The Jedi team makes it to the lake, only to be met with an assault by a substantial battle droid contingent. While R2's droid team attempts to delay the enemy for as long as possible (and are quickly destroyed in the process), the Jedi, clones, and Tarkin descend the cliff face towards the lake's edge, then flee into a series of gulleys. As they progress, Skywalker, Tano, and Kenobi engage in a discussion about Tarkin's arrogant demeanor and the Jedi's inability to halt the war's progression due to their rigid code. Shortly after, they notice the Anooba pursuing them, accompanied by a squad of STAPs. Skywalker, Kenobi, and R2 draw the creatures into a trap, but the rest of the team is then ambushed by crab droids and another group of STAPs. Separated from the others, Piell and Tano are attacked by the last remaining Anooba, which mortally wounds the Jedi Master. As he is dying, Piell entrusts Tano with his portion of the Nexus Route coordinates, despite her admission that she was never assigned to the mission, with the express instruction to repeat it to none other than the Jedi Council. The Jedi then take a brief moment to consign his body to the lava before moving on.
Eventually, Sobeck arrives at the location, determined to personally ensure the success of his mission, and intercepts the refugees just as they are preparing to cross over to the island. Fives shoots down his STAP, causing it to land on the island. Sobeck then grapples with Tarkin and prepares to throw him into the lava, but Tano eliminates him before he can carry out the act. Just as an army of crab droids is about to overwhelm the island, Master Koon arrives with a gunship to extract the fugitives. Once they are safely aboard a Venator-class Star Destroyer, the rescue force immediately retreats.
Despite the mission's success, the situation takes an unexpected turn upon their return to Coruscant: Tarkin declares that he will only share his part of the information with Chancellor Palpatine himself, while Tano remains committed to her promise to Master Piell, agreeing to reveal her portion only to the Jedi Council. Consequently, Master Yoda is compelled to consult with Palpatine regarding this matter. Upon Skywalker's inquiry, Master Koon corroborates Tano's assertion that he had authorized her participation in the mission, and Tarkin shakes Skywalker's hand, praising him on his viewpoints—as a lauding Obi-Wan observes quite critically.
Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Piell's passing in the episode stands in stark contrast to his later chronological death in Coruscant Nights I: Jedi Twilight in 19 BBY. On March 11, 2011, Leland Chee mentioned on his StarWars.com blog that he was killed in the novel due to possible continuity problems concerning his council membership. However, after the Star Wars: Coruscant Nights trilogy was finished, it was revealed that "Citadel Rescue" would rewrite his death, and they tried to reduce the number of sources that contradicted this. This contradiction is not present in the current canon.
In the scene a few seconds after Plo's gunship takes off, there are two naval clone officers alive. This is incorrect because three naval officers have clearly died, which brings the officer total to five. In "The Citadel" when Anakin rescued the officers, there were only four of them in the prison cell.
During one of the combat sequences, Commander Cody leaps onto a crab droid and shoots it in the head before pivoting to engage other approaching droids. This closely mirrors what other clones perform on Utapau in Revenge of the Sith.
R2-D2's squad of three battle droids is confusing because in the prior episode when the clone and a droid peered over the edge, one of the droids was shot and destroyed. Yet in this episode all three droids were present.
For a brief moment when the team is getting into the gunship, Ahsoka's lightsaber appears blue.
Notably, after the fugitives are rescued from the surface, one Venator is missing from the task force (only three Venators can be seen engaged in battle and later jumping into hyperspace despite the force having four Venators).
This also ranked as the third least-watched episode of the entire series, garnering only 1.54 million viewers.
As Tarkin and Anakin shake hands in the final scene, a rendition of the Imperial March can be heard playing faintly in the background.
