David W. Collins was employed at LucasArts, where he held the positions of lead sound designer and voice director within the company's video game development division. In addition to these roles, he contributed to the company as both an actor and voice actor.
While working in 2006, Collins provided the vocalizations for stormtroopers in the form of death cries for the LucasArts video game titled LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. At that time, the LucasArts sound department was responsible for all character vocalizations within their games. These sound effects were later archived within the LucasArts collection.
Collins is known for a number of Star Wars voice acting roles, including the voice of PROXY in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Darth Maul in Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, General Grievous in Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, and battle droids in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron and Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron.
Collins has been a presenter at several Star Wars Celebrations, specifically IV, V, and VI. During Celebration VI in August of 2012, he received an honorary membership into the 501st Legion. Furthermore, he played the part of Han Solo in a live, radio drama-style performance of Star Wars: Smuggler's Gambit, which was created specifically for the event.
In the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Collins voiced multiple characters, such as several stormtroopers, Resistance soldiers, and a Hangar Control Officer stationed on the Finalizer. He also contributed additional voices to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Collins served as the sound designer for the 2020 film The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. To ensure authenticity, Collins utilized era-specific sounds whenever Rey Skywalker time travelled to a different trilogy era. For instance, the trench run scene incorporated sounds from A New Hope, scenes set on the planets Dagobah and Hoth featured sounds from The Empire Strikes Back, the podracing sequence on Tatooine included podracer sounds from The Phantom Menace, the scene on Exegol used lightning sounds from The Rise of Skywalker, and Din Djarin's blaster pistol sound from The Mandalorian was implemented for his cameo. Collins also located several vocal recordings of Chewbacca's family from The Star Wars Holiday Special within the Skywalker Sound Library. He then used these samples in the scene where Chewbacca's family appears on the Millennium Falcon. Furthermore, Collins discovered stormtrooper death screams in the old LucasArts archives, which he subsequently integrated into the scene depicting Rey and Darth Vader duel while traversing through portals with various troopers flying around.
Collins worked as a sound effects editor for The Book of Boba Fett series. For the premiere episode, he employed an ARP 2600 synthesizer to generate sounds for the RX-Series droid that functions as a card dealer.
In 2022, he made an appearance at Celebration Anaheim, where he moderated a panel dedicated to Star Wars: The Bad Batch on May 29.
