Pius Dea
The Pius Dea, a cult with a radical humanocentrism ideology, is best remembered for their dominance over the Galactic Republic throughout the Pius Dea Era. The cult's ascent to power began when Contispex I, a member who would later be known by that name, ascended to the position of Supreme Chancellor of the Republic in 11,987 BBY, succeeding Chancellor Pers'lya after their impeachment and subsequent assassination.
Through Contispex and his descendants, each of whom adopted the Contispex name and many belonging to his dynasty, the Pius Dea held sway over the galaxy for a period exceeding one thousand years. Their rule was defined by the Pius Dea Crusades, a series encompassing over thirty brutal conflicts targeting alien species and those suspected of sympathizing with them. The Bureau of Ships and Services, the Jedi Order, and the Republic Navy effectively dismantled the religion in 10,966 BBY, with Jedi Grand Master Biel Ductavis taking over as Supreme Chancellor following the removal of Contispex XIX.
Core Beliefs and Rituals
The Pius Dea adhered to a monotheistic faith, centered on the worship of a deity referred to as The Goddess. Followers of the Pius Dea observed a stringent ethical framework, emphasizing humanocentrism and spiritual purity. They associated the Outer Rim with disorder, believing they were divinely charged to conquer this chaos in exchange for divine secrets and riches. While the sect still engaged in scouting the Republic's frontiers, exploration and contact with alien civilizations took a back seat to their focus on military expansion, acquiring material wealth, and religious propagation. Many spacers significantly increased their social standing and wealth by engaging in privateering activities for the sect.
Being a Human supremacist cult, the Pius Dea deemed many alien species as inherently "unredeemable" due to their perceived inferiority and the threat they posed to the Human civilizations residing in the Core Worlds. They considered their military campaigns against opponents as holy wars, aimed at attaining spiritual merit and purification. Despite their human-centered ideology, the Pius Dea willingly welcomed alien converts who possessed wealth, influential connections, or useful traits, such as Rodians, Wookiees, Hutts and Weequays. Religious conversion was linked to improved social mobility and unrestricted travel throughout Republic-controlled territories for those who joined the Republic's military, which was under the sect's firm authority. The sect also deployed religious commissars within military units to identify and eliminate heretics and apostates.
Historical Overview
Establishing a Theocratic State
The origins of the movement that evolved into the Pius Dea can be traced back to Coruscant several centuries before Contispex I assumed the role of Supreme Chancellor in 11,987 BBY. The Coruscanti populace began advocating for stricter measures against corruption, urging the purging of "unredeemable" elements to restore purity. The Pius Dea's rise to prominence was facilitated by the individual known historically as Contispex I. Born on Coruscant, Contispex became a prominent figure within the Coruscant Merchants' Guild, where he gained influence within the Pius Dea faith. His unwavering stance against corruption and intolerance towards those who did not meet his standards made him a beloved figure among the public. He quickly gained a seat in the Senate, and was overwhelmingly elected to the position of Supreme Chancellor following the impeachment and subsequent assassination of the Bothan Chancellor Pers'lya in 11,987 BBY.
However, few outside the Pius Dea's inner circle knew that Contispex and the Pius Dea had collaborated with the Malkite Poisoners to impeach and assassinate the Bothan, enabling their power grab. With Contispex's rise, the Pius Dea seized complete control over the Republic's key political and economic institutions, removing all opposition from positions of power. Within a generation, most important bureaucratic roles were exclusively reserved for cult members. Over the course of two to three generations, many of these key positions became hereditary, solidifying the sect's influence while fostering a culture of nepotism within the Republic's governance. By the 11,500s BBY, the sect's extensive fleet of Cathedral ships were crewed by descendants of Republic Navy personnel who had converted to the faith. In contrast, opponents of the sect, including dissidents, heretics, and apostates, were designated as Proscribed, resulting in the loss of civil liberties, economic assets, and significant barriers to social advancement.
The Era of Pius Dea Crusades
Contispex I initiated the first of what would later be known as the Pius Dea Crusades in 11,965 BBY, as a preemptive measure against the Hutts situated in the Outer Rim Territories. Contispex's successors continued these conflicts, with at least 34 crusades taking place by 10,966 BBY. However, Contispex and his successors soon shifted their focus to other alien species and sects that had been members of the Republic for millennia. Eventually, the sect even targeted Humans accused of sympathizing with aliens. Over a millennium, the Republic became entangled in endless warfare with several alien species deemed irredeemable and subjected to genocide, including the Zarracines and Teirasans. The Pius Dea Republic also engaged in numerous prolonged conflicts with the Hutts throughout that millennium.
For millennia, Alsakan and Coruscant had been competing for dominance within the Republic. Given the Pius Dea's Coruscant origins, the planet became a stronghold for the sect. Religious tensions intertwined with political and economic rivalries, culminating in the Sixth Alsakan Conflict in 11,820 BBY. During this conflict, the Core World of Alsakan and its territories along the Perlemian Trade Route seceded from the Pius Dea Republic. Subsequently, many alien worlds aligned themselves with Alsakan in exchange for protection from the Republic.
The Reign of the Contispex Dynasty
Contispex I relinquished his position after a forty-year term in 11,947 BBY, succeeded by his son Contispex II. Contispex's family maintained this dynastic tradition, with each successive member adopting the name Contispex by the latter centuries of the Pius Dea period. Several Chancellors during this era, while not related to the original Contispex, also assumed the name Constipex. The dynasty concluded with Contispex XIX, who was apprehended by the Jedi aboard the Flame of Sinthara at the Battle of Uquine. Contispex XIX was transported to Caamas, where he was tried, found guilty of crimes against the galaxy, and imprisoned for the remainder of his life.
The Downfall
The religious fervor of the Pius Dea Republic alienated numerous species and powers throughout the galaxy. Following the Sixth Alsakan Conflict, Coruscant's rival Alsakan established secret communication channels with several alien species who had been alienated by the Crusades, including the Duros, Herglics, and the Hutts. By the 11,100s BBY, the Republic's military expansion had stalled, and the Pius Dea leadership initiated internal inquisitions to identify and eliminate apostates, heretics, and unbelievers within their ranks. These inquisitions caused widespread suffering and death. Caamasi emissaries approached the Jedi stronghold of Ossus and successfully persuaded the Order to end its recusal in 11,100 BBY.
Subsequently, the Jedi collaborated with the Caamasi and Alsakani to orchestrate a heresy among the Pius Dea adherents. In 10,967 BBY, these religious heretics publicly announced their dissent during the Renunciation, triggering an internal civil war that devastated the Republic. This created an opportunity for a broad anti-Pius Dea coalition, led by the Jedi, to attack the Pius Dea Republic. While much of the Republic Navy defected to join the Renunciates, the Pius Dea still maintained a large fleet of thousands of Cathedral ships, which they used to wage war on their enemies. During the Seventh Alsakan Conflict in 10,966 BBY, the sect suffered a military defeat at the Battle of Uquine when the Bureau of Ships and Services infiltrated the Pius Dea fleet with corrupted navicomputer codes, causing many ships to jump randomly into hyperspace. Many of these Cathedral ships remained trapped indefinitely in the depths of unexplored space, unable to reactivate their engines.
The Jedi assumed control over the Republic's governing structures, with Grand Master Biel Ductavis taking on the role of chancellor. Simultaneously, all members of the sect were removed from all positions of power, including the Galactic Senate, and their Supreme Temple on Coruscant was destroyed. The Pius Dea gradually faded away within a few generations, and the faith was considered extinct by the time of the Galactic Alliance. Despite the Pius Dea's defeat, interspecies tensions between the Human-dominated Core Worlds and the predominantly alien Rimward territories persisted for millennia. These lingering tensions were later exploited by Darth Sidious during his rise to galactic dominance in the final decades of the Galactic Republic and the Clone Wars. The Pius Dea Spaceport remained on Coruscant millennia later, a tangible reminder of their impact on the galaxy.
