Hobin Carsamba

In 34 ABY, on the planet Jakku, there existed an alien who made his living as a scavenger: Hobin Carsamba. Once, Carsamba found himself in line at Niima Outpost, waiting to trade with the junk dealer Unkar Plutt, just as the scavenger Rey was conducting her own business with Plutt. The following day, Carsamba remained in Niima when the forces of the First Order launched an attack.

Biography

Hobin Carsamba was an alien scavenger who sustained himself on the harsh desert planet that was Jakku. During the year of 34 ABY, Carsamba was present within Niima Outpost, a trading settlement situated on Jakku and managed by the Crolute junk dealer, Unkar Plutt.

Hobin Carsamba passed the scavenger Rey in Niima Outpost.

Having acquired salvage for bartering, Carsamba at one point joined the queue of patrons awaiting their turn with Plutt at his Concession Stand, at the same time that the scavenger Rey was engaged with Plutt at the front. Carsamba positioned himself in the line between Bobbajo, the pet seller and storyteller, and another humanoid scavenger who was at the end of the line.

The following day found Carsamba once again in Niima and, while moving away from Plutt's stand, he passed Rey as she arrived with BB-8, the Resistance astromech droid, aboard her speeder. Later that day, Carsamba was still there when Niima was attacked by the forces of the First Order as they searched for BB-8. Rey, BB-8, and Finn, the First Order deserter, fled through Niima's marquees, passing Carsamba, as they attempted to evade pursuing stormtroopers.

Equipment

During his time in Niima, Carsamba donned brown clothing along with a dark-colored helmet. The scavenger also carried a sizable, yellow cylinder strapped to his back, in addition to a smaller, yellow box mounted on his chest.

Behind the scenes

Scott Baldwin on set as Hobin Carsamba

Hobin Carsamba's debut occurred in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, part of the sequel trilogy, where he was brought to life by Scott Baldwin. During the pre-production phase of The Force Awakens in October 2013, costume conceptual artist Glyn Dillon created concept art of Carsamba, labeling the character "Outpost Alien C039." Matthew Wood, a sound designer, noticed Carsamba's resemblance to the Skakoan character Wat Tambor, whom he had voiced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Consequently, Wood incorporated a sound effect reminiscent of Tambor's robotic voice into the film scene where Carsamba is standing in the Concession Stand.

Although the character remained unnamed in the film, his name was revealed in the 2016 video game LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Despite the non-canon status of the game, Pablo Hidalgo from the Lucasfilm Story Group verified that the names assigned by the game to previously unnamed characters, Carsamba among them, were considered part of the canon.
