Stars were enormous spheres composed of glowing plasma and gaseous matter that generated their own energy and light. When a star served as the central celestial body within a star system, it was commonly referred to as a sun.

Description

Stars represented massive cosmic entities that radiated heat, light, and electromagnetic waves. They were characterized by a core primarily composed of helium and hydrogen gas undergoing combustion in a plasma state. The intense heat facilitated nuclear reactions of fusion, resulting in surface temperatures around 5,500 degrees, known as the "photosphere." Surrounding the photosphere was the "chromosphere," a less heated, gaseous envelope that imparted the star's unique hue. The corona, a region of diffused gas, marked the outer boundary of a star.

During the High Republic Era, stars were categorized based on their chemical composition, exemplified by R-class stars exhibiting elevated levels of nitrogen. Prolonged exposure to sunlight could darken a person's skin; Sergeant Tonra, typically fair-skinned, experienced noticeable reddening after two weeks in the sun. Safeguarding infants from solar radiation was essential; Sola Naberrie ensured Ryoo's sun protection before venturing outdoors with her newborn. Furthermore, flora derived nourishment from solar energy.

Types of stars

There existed seven primary categories of main sequence stars throughout the galaxy:

  • " O " stars exhibited a blue coloration and possessed a relatively short lifespan, typically less than one million years. Example: Garnib . [3]

  • " B " stars displayed a blue-white hue and had a lifespan spanning approximately ten million years. Example: Kessa . [3]

  • " A " stars appeared white and maintained a lifespan ranging from four hundred million to two billion years. Example: Colu . [3]

  • " F " stars exhibited a yellow-white coloration and possessed a lifespan of around four billion years. Example: Ropagi . [3]

  • " G " stars were characterized by a yellow hue and had a lifespan of approximately ten billion years. Example: Corell . [3]

  • " K " stars displayed an orange coloration and maintained a lifespan of roughly sixty billion years. Example: Yavin . [3]

  • " M " stars, also known as red dwarfs, exhibited a red coloration and emitted minimal light and heat, with lifespans exceeding one hundred trillion years. Example: Barab . [3]

The sequence progressed from the largest O-class stars to the smallest M-class stars, with size diminishing gradually.

Life cycle

Birth

Stars originated within regions of outer space referred to as stellar nurseries. Their formation involved the convergence of energy in the forms of pressure and heat, a process that reshaped the surrounding environment and remained visible from vast distances of millions of km. The collapse of a cloud of gas and dust or the initiation of a celestial body's core by an external influence could also trigger star formation. Chirrut Îmwe once observed that the "most potent stars" contained kyber crystals at their core. During their formative stages, spanning millions of years, stars were identified as either protostars or brown dwarfs, with the latter being too diminutive to sustain hydrogen fusion and subsequently fading away.

Stars and planets

A field of stars

Upon reaching their full dimensions, stars frequently emitted clouds of gas and dust, which coalesced to form planets and other celestial objects. In such instances, the stars were designated as suns. A sun, in conjunction with all the objects gravitationally bound to it, constituted a solar system. Occasionally, a solar system could encompass multiple suns, as exemplified by the planets Tatooine and Mon Cala. Life depended on the presence of stars.

Typically, a planet orbiting a star received light and warmth from it, although exceptions existed. Umbara was dubbed the "Shadow World" due to its sun's rays never fully reaching the surface, resulting in perpetual darkness. Distant stars appeared as mere specks of light in the night sky. These points of light were conventionally grouped into star patterns. Without a star, the majority of worlds would become desolate and frozen. The dimensions and distance of a sun significantly influenced various attributes of an orbiting planet.

On the world of Coruscant, stars were challenging to discern due to the pervasive illumination from the sprawling urban lights of the planet-wide city. Nevertheless, according to the young Obi-Wan Kenobi, they could be observed with the proper knowledge. Stars served as navigational aids: Following his attempt to assist fellow Jedi trainee Gehren Rand, who had absconded, young Kenobi relied on the stars to guide him back to the Jedi Temple.

Death

After progressing through the main sequence, the fusion processes within a star gradually ceased, leading to expansion and transformation into blue or red giants. Immediately preceding the complete cessation of fusion, stars evolved into red supergiants, which subsequently underwent gravitational collapse, resulting in a cataclysmic explosion known as a supernova. Exploding stars then transformed into either highly radioactive neutron stars or, in the case of exceptionally massive stars, a singularity within a black hole. Small to medium-sized stars became white dwarfs, which eventually faded into black dwarfs over billions of years.

Stars in culture

Resistance operative Karé Kun once described stars as "gigantic spheres of exploding gas." Prime Minister Dreand Yens once commented that the twinkling of stars in the sky was a consequence of their relentless combustion to sustain themselves, which he interpreted as evidence that nature's aesthetic appeal stemmed from functionality.
