Haydel Goravvus

Haydel Goravvus, a male individual of mixed Human and Hamadryas heritage, distinguished himself as a businessman before rising to prominence as the inaugural Republic Senator representing the planet of Taris. He further cemented his legacy by leading the Taris Resistance against the Mandalorian invasion during the year 3964 BBY. Originating from humble circumstances, Goravvus initially spent several years employed at a Lhosan Industries factory situated in Taris' Lower City. His exceptional cunning was quickly noticed, which led to his rapid advancement into management roles. Eventually, Goravvus ascended to become a key enforcer for Lhosan, engaging in clandestine transactions throughout the galaxy. His most significant accomplishment involved orchestrating Taris' entry into the Republic, a feat achieved through strategic bribery in exchange for securing Taris' Senate seat. Surprisingly, upon assuming his senatorial duties, Goravvus underwent a transformation, shifting his focus from personal enrichment to serving the interests of his constituents. He evolved into a dedicated public servant, challenging the entrenched corrupt business interests that dominated Taris.

In 3964 BBY, the Mandalorian warrior clans initiated their large scale war against the Republic by launching a devastating attack on Taris, resulting in its siege and subsequent destruction. As the invaders swiftly gained control of the Upper City, Goravvus, steadfast in his commitment to his people, established an armed resistance force composed of surviving law enforcement personnel and armed civilians. Despite lacking prior military experience, Goravvus and his Resistance managed to secure a stronghold encompassing several city blocks within the Lower City, despite facing overwhelming Mandalorian forces. He forged an alliance with the Hidden Beks, a prominent swoop gang operating in the Lower City that was still resisting the invaders. Although Goravvus devised a plan to weaken the Mandalorians by assassinating their chief siege engineer, Cassus Fett, the Mandalorians preemptively launched a devastating assault on the Resistance headquarters, causing the group to scatter. Goravvus survived the attack, and despite his initial reluctance to abandon Taris, he eventually returned to Republic territory, where he became a prominent advocate for refugees and those endangered by the war.

Biography

Journey to Coruscant

Haydel Goravvus, Senator of Taris.

Born to a Human businessman and a Hamadryas domestic worker, Haydel Goravvus spent his childhood on the Outer Rim planet of Taris. Due to the pervasive Humanocentrism on Taris, the young near-Human was denied a formal education. Instead, Goravvus worked in a swoop bike factory owned by Lhosan Industries located in the Machineville district of the Lower City during his formative years. After working as a common laborer for several years, Goravvus began his ascent to becoming a prominent figure on Taris. As a teenager struggling with poverty and hunger, he accepted payment from Lhosan management to suppress a strike, which brought him to the attention of corporate executives. For over three decades, Goravvus served as a key enforcer for Lhosan, traveling throughout the galaxy to engage in illicit dealings and undermine competitors. Goravvus' most notable achievement was bribing several Senators to support Taris' application for Republic membership, in exchange for corporate support in his senatorial campaign once Taris was admitted. The plan proved successful, and Goravvus became Taris' first Republic Senator unopposed, with limited public awareness of the behind-the-scenes machinations, despite some discontent among Taris' Human elite regarding the election of a mixed-race Senator.

However, upon reaching the Senate, Goravvus underwent a profound personal transformation. Recognizing his responsibility to the people of Taris, he prioritized serving his constituents over personal gain, evolving into a model Senator and a selfless public servant. By 3964 BBY, tensions had emerged between Goravvus and his longtime friend, Jervo Thalien, the Chairbeing of Lhosan, despite their extensive corporate history. Goravvus had grown weary of consistently granting Lhosan Industries tax breaks, even as Thalien's operations were significantly impacted by the Black Vulkar swoop gang. He expressed indifference to Lhosan's potential withdrawal from Taris, trusting the local Jedi Council's ability to address the gang issue. However, he quickly changed his mind after witnessing Jedi Padawan Zayne Carrick being outmaneuvered and defeated by the common criminal Marn Hierogryph.

Shortly thereafter, Carrick became one of the Republic's most wanted fugitives after being accused of slaughtering four other Padawans in his class at Taris' Jedi Tower, and he fled with his alleged accomplice, Hierogryph. Carrick, who had been framed by the five Jedi Masters on the local Council who had committed the murders, managed to evade summary execution and escape the planet, sparking riots on Taris. In the following weeks, Goravvus disappeared from public view as Taris descended into chaos. While the public was unaware of Goravvus' whereabouts, considering it a major mystery, the Senator had actually gone in search of Thalien, who had withdrawn Lhosan Industries from Taris in the wake of the riots. Goravvus pursued Thalien across the galaxy, imploring him to reconsider, and eventually threatened to expose the bribes he had issued on behalf of Lhosan Industries. However, before Goravvus could act, events on Taris took a turn that required his return home.

Leading the Resistance

Haydel Goravvus intervenes in a showdown between his Resistance and the Hidden Beks gang.

The Padawan Massacre prompted the Jedi Order to withdraw from Taris entirely, and the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, engaged in a war of conquest against the Republic, interpreted it as a signal to attack the planet. The Mandalorian assault was overwhelming, and the invaders quickly seized the Upper City with minimal resistance. It was at this point that Goravvus reappeared, revealing that he had assembled an armed resistance movement in the Lower City. Transitioning from Senator to warrior, Goravvus organized the most well-equipped and effective force opposing the Mandalorian invasion, comprising surviving law enforcement personnel led by Constable Noana Sowrs and a contingent of armed locals, many of whom were non-Human. Despite constant Mandalorian attacks, Goravvus' Resistance managed to establish a territory encompassing several city blocks in the Lower City, and they soon received a significant boost when Raana Tey, one of the Jedi Masters formerly stationed at the Jedi Tower, was ordered back to Taris by Republic Supreme Chancellor Tol Cressa and joined Goravvus' group.

As the conflict escalated, Goravvus received unexpected visitors at the abandoned factory serving as his base: Zayne Carrick and Marn Hierogryph, accompanied by the swoop gang known as the Hidden Beks, who had been engaged in their own struggle against the foreign invaders. Despite initial tensions between the two factions—Tey wanted Carrick, still a wanted fugitive, killed, while Sowrs wanted to exact Tarisian justice on the Beks' "criminal" leader, Gadon Thek—Goravvus brokered an uneasy truce, as the Beks sought to negotiate and join forces. Goravvus reached an agreement with Thek, merging their forces and providing medical aid to the Beks' wounded in exchange for their valuable skills and vehicles. Goravvus also discovered that he had personal business with Hierogryph, who had been hired by Jervo Thalien to track Goravvus down. During a private moment, Hierogryph revealed a transmitter powerful enough to bypass Mandalorian signal jamming and initiated a holo-call with Thalien. At that moment, Del Moomo, an Ithorian bounty hunter, apprehended Goravvus, and Thalien revealed that he had placed a bounty on the Senator to prevent him from exposing Lhosan's illicit dealings.

Raana Tey intervened and disarmed Moomo, and Thalien's trump card—the transmitter, which also functioned as a powerful thermal charge—failed to detonate. With Thalien's leverage gone, Goravvus dictated a new arrangement, requiring Thalien to use his political influence to arrange for aid to be sent to the Resistance before terminating the call. Soon after, Goravvus learned that Cassus Fett, a key lieutenant of Mandalore the Ultimate, had arrived in the Upper City to oversee operations. Sensing a critical opportunity, Goravvus convened a strategic meeting with the entire Resistance force. Utilizing charges recovered in recent raids and the detonator from Thalien's failed bomb, Goravvus and his men devised a plan to bomb the Jedi Tower, Fett's command center, and inflict a devastating blow on the Mandalorian siege effort. However, upon reaching the Jedi Tower, they discovered that Cassus Fett had already departed. Instead, the Mandalorians used this opportunity to launch a direct assault on the Resistance base, dealing a critical blow to Goravvus and his group.

The Mandalorian assault was swift, brutal, and relentless, forcing most of the survivors into the rakghoul-infested wasteland known as the Undercity. Although Goravvus survived the attack and had the chance to escape the planet on Raana Tey's shuttle, he refused to abandon his planet and instead gave his spot to Shel Jelavan, a Resistance agent. At some point, however, Goravvus fled Taris and returned to the Republic capital of Coruscant, where he became a prominent advocate for refugees throughout the remainder of the war. Jelavan, who later worked for Goravvus after his escape from Taris, served as an aide to Zayne Carrick in his Rogue Moon Project, which aimed to assist the same at-risk populations that Goravvus supported.

Personality and traits

Haydel Goravvus, both as a Senator and as the leader of the Taris Resistance, prioritized the well-being of his people above all else. A respected leader, Goravvus tolerated no disunity, whether between Sowrs and the Hidden Beks or Tey and Carrick, believing that even the slightest division could lead to defeat and fearing the chaos and violence of Mandalorian rule. Despite the significant personal risk, Goravvus remained on Taris to fight for his people in their time of need, even refusing the opportunity to escape the planet when his Resistance collapsed. However, Goravvus' motivations were not always selfless. In his youth, he was a cunning corporate enforcer who prioritized power and status. His perspective shifted upon entering the Galactic Senate. A lifelong loner, Goravvus found a sense of belonging among the people of Taris and embraced the ideals of public service.

Goravvus' transformation led him to challenge the business interests that had facilitated his entry into the Senate and to collaborate with "criminals" fighting for freedom from the Mandalorians. The "new" Goravvus was candid about his past illicit dealings, and while he remained friends with Thalien, he prioritized the needs of his planet over those of his former employer, willing to threaten to expose Lhosan's bribery of Taris into the Republic to maintain their economic presence. Goravvus' commitment to assisting those at risk continued long after the fall of his Resistance, as he became a vocal advocate for refugees and people living on occupied worlds throughout the Mandalorian Wars. Goravvus had green skin, white hair, and blue eyes, and he was fluent in several languages, including Galactic Basic, Gamorrese, Hamadryas, High Galactic, Huttese, Ithorese, Kedorzhan, and Twi'leki.

Behind the scenes

Haydel Goravvus was the creation of John Jackson Miller, the author of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comic series. The character made his debut in the series' first issue, but his identity was not revealed until the release of the trade paperback for the Commencement story arc. In The Taris Holofeed: Siege Edition, featured in the fifteenth issue, his name was initially spelled "Gorravus." Miller clarified in his production notes for that issue that the final spelling of the character's surname was still under consideration. However, in The Taris Holofeed: Invasion Edition, the senator's surname appeared as "Gorravus". Furthermore, his entry in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia rendered his name as "Gor-ravvus." The first name "Haydel" was assigned to Goravvus in his entry in the Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide, where his backstory was expanded to provide Miller with a character to represent the Corporate Agent prestige class for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.

In the comics, Goravvus was drawn by Brian Ching and Dustin Weaver for the first and twenty-third issues of the Knights of the Old Republic comic series, respectively. The first issue depicted the character with yellow irises, while the twenty-third issue portrayed Goravvus' eyes as blue.
