Haruun Kal

Haruun Kal, situated in the Mid Rim Territories, was a planet of significance, being the homeworld of the esteemed Jedi Master Mace Windu.

Description

Azita Cruuz at Lake Haruuni

Found within the Mid Rim of the galaxy, specifically at grid coordinates M-17 on the Standard Galactic Grid, was the planet Haruun Kal. Pelek Baw functioned as its main city and capital. The planet featured southern gas marshes, along with Lake Haruuni which was located at a high enough altitude in the mountains that its fish seemed to almost float out of the water.

History

Pelek Baw

According to old stories, Haruun Kal's first inhabitants were stranded Jedi, whose crashed ship sparked life that then spread across the world.

Every young child on Haruun received an injection that left a recognizable mark, a slightly raised, round bump on their upper chest, which the locals used to identify each other when off-planet. Childhoods were generally difficult, and the planet had a high rate of death among young people. Leaving the world required strong will and great sacrifice. Mace Windu was taken from his homeworld as a child to train as a Jedi Master and become a champion of the Jedi Order. Many children and their parents resided in Pelek Baw, where some parents cherished their children while others neglected them. Azita Cruuz became an orphan when her parents perished during their journey to the planet, and she was treated poorly by the other children upon her arrival.

During the Clone Wars, a battle took place on the planet between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Jedi General Depa Billaba commanded the Republic's forces against those led by General Grievous, who held the title of Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist Droid Armies. Billaba engaged Grievous in direct combat but was defeated, resulting in approximately 90% of her troops being lost.

Due to a conflict that lingered after the Clone Wars, the Imperial Military was sent to suppress an insurrection on Haruun Kal. The conflict concluded with an orbital bombardment carried out under the Base Gamma One protocol, ending the insurrection and securing a victory for the Imperial forces. The intensity of the bombardment caused the seas to boil and induced convulsions in Imperials still planetside. Despite the forests being turned to ash, Lammas tree seedlings had begun to grow again by 34 ABY.

Behind the scenes

Haruun Kal was initially mentioned in the official Star Wars canon within a special feature included in Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season One, a collection available on Blu-ray and DVD that contained the entire first season of the canonical animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was released on November 3, 2009. It was originally designed for "Children of the Force," a Star Wars Legends story featured in Star Wars Tales 13. In Mace Windu 4, the Shroud erroneously identifies Haruun Kal as a world located in the Outer Rim.
